It does. The whole "Apocalypse around the corner" trope plays heavily throughout the game. Even when you first start the campaign the feeling of dread and foreshadowing is thick. It's amazing how it plays with your emotions I love the game for it.

What Freespace does really well is set stone, mood and feelings. It always FEELS like you're doing something, either fighting for your life or handing out a crushing and significant defeat to an enemy.

@imstm Freespace 2 is VERY UNIQUE in this as like I said you have huge super capital ships with +80 turrets which ALL differ as you have small ANTI-FIGHTER/BOMBER beams as well as FLAK turrets shredding entire wings in seconds, as well as MISSILE BATTERIES helping the FLAK to do even more damage small sized ships and last but not least HUGE ANTI-CAPITAL beam turrets, ALL of those weapons with their OWN animations, charge ups etc. and EVEN SLASHING BEAMS! NO OTHER GAME has this detail like FS 2!

@DarkRezo "In the FreeSpace 2 intro cutscene, which depicts the Battle of Deneb (2335), the SD Lucifer's beam weapon pierces the hull of an unknown Orion-class Destroyer..." Volition responded, "Call it that if you want," so the ship is generally referred to as the Legion."

@imstm ... from the very big artillery guns (a.k.a. huge anti capital beam cannons in FS) with different caliber sizes down to small flak guns (FLAK guns in FS or missile batteries for anti fighter usage as well as the minor anti fighter beams)! Thats why I find this game so awesome even If I can NOT simply fly around with a Sathanas or Colossus shredding everything in my wake and annihilating entire planets ;) its still awesome to SEE and ACT with those ships in open space!

@imstm ... NO GAME even up to today can create so much suspension of belief in the capship fights as the Freespace series can cause Volition took their time to study the second world war (cause that was their example for the huge battles that were about to see in FS) and especially the big ships that were built to those times like the Bismark or Yamato which REALLY existed and also had different kinds of weapons ...

I wouldn't assume that just because Interplay now to own the entire Freespace IP. The company is nothing more then a shadow of it's former self, infact you could say they are some sort of zombie-dinosaur from the past. There will never be a Freespace 3...unless Koch Media/Deep Silver decides to buy the entire Freespace IP from Interplay.

@imstm Well you fly the normandy its your ship that you have in ME but it can not engage in ship to ship combat. You can just fly around the starmap around the planets/systems. Well I know also the X-Series / Wing Commander series and the like which are kinda close to the FS series but none of it can give you this suspension of belief in capital ship combat like the FS series can, let alone that the storyline is simply EPIC ... sorry no other to describe this ;).

@imstm The only game that at least comes a bit close to this is maybe the X-series where you are able to fly big ships unlike FS2 but those ships neither are that much detailed with subsystems etc. nor do they have the turret count nor do they have the many different kinds of weapons like huge beam guns in different versions used for anti capship fight nor small anti-fighter/bomber beams which are also in different versions and have their own charge up animations ...

Wow, you DO realize that when the game got released it wasn't open source ? Plus, open-source means that people who own it can modify it as much as they want, you still have to pay for it, that is the reason why Volition put it on GOG for 5.99.

imstm there's Star Conflict, though it's mainly a multiplayer game and the open world story isn't as good as a single player game. Plus there's less chance of epic capital ship battles. It can be a grind though. I'd love a game with more story and large ships, sense of scale and not too much money/trading stuff.

@imstm Buddy I do not need to dock or fly around with my tiny little fighter around an open world cause thats not the kind of fun I would expect. I mean be honest wouldn't you like to fly a SJ Sathanas or a GTVA Colossus through open space annihilating anything that is in your way. Those ships have the brute firepower to do so. I know, I know you can neither do this in Freespace 2 nor in Freelancer cause in NO OTHER game you ever had such DETAILED BIG capital ships that had the config we see!

You are incorrect and misinformed. The game engine was made open source by the developers (Volition). The assets, (models, graphics, storyline, etc) are copyright owned by Interplay. Thus, buying the game, from GoG, contributes money to Interplay. Downloading it for free is illegal. Seriously.
