Please we need clarification on your iso settings Your exposure will still be the same till you reach your iso threshold ( minimum/maximum) Because the camera will compensate for the exposure if you use auto iso. Example we would like to see, Lock your ISO at 100 Lock your shutter speed to double the frame rate And then try the NDs on one by one so he have a clear idea of the exposure intensity for each filter on a sunny day. Best way to use ND filters is in auto exposure as your constantly moving around and the light changes. Just choose the correct filter for the brightness of the day and put it in auto and let the algorithms keep the right exposure at the same time, the ND filter will keep the shutter speed low enough to keep you in the ballpark for enough motion blur. Otherwise you are constantly changing the ND filter.

Even better: choose desired shutter speed and choose ISO bracket (50-1600 for example if not under very dark conditions). You get the motion blur you want while keeping good exposure in changing conditions.

I'm surprised their wasn't a bigger difference between the ND64, 128 and 1000. Was your ISO set to auto or on a fixed setting? Maybe that is changing when you change NDs? Coming from a stills photography background you would get your sky /background exposure the way you want it with the ND filters, then if your main subject is too dark you would use artificial light in (reflector, flash etc). Obviously that's not very convenient for vlogs. But maybe a small LED like a Ulanzi RGB VL49 could work if there is some way of attaching it. Just my thoughts - I'm still yet to purchase any of this gear 😂

Thanks for the video. Auto shutter is the best way when using nd filters in changing light. (not auto exposure). Lock your (exposure) with the nd filter on, cap your iso at 800 and put your (shutter) on auto. If you don't lock in your exposure that's how you get highlight clipping. Hi, did you lock white balance? I recommend you test them that way otherwise. I see huge shifts to green and magenta depending on the filter. That would be normal for ND's to have some tint yet it's strange that one goes green an another one magenta. Lack of consistency would be an issue imo.
@TravelingAhn
11 ай бұрын
Hello, I did lock the White Balance. So it seems that is very important to keep from the huge shifts, right? Perhaps my Auto ISO 50-1600 might have played a factor?
@alfonsodam
11 ай бұрын
@@TravelingAhn If white balance was locked then the color shifts are caused by the filters most probably. Best way to fully check would be using a grey card and colour patch. You could lock ISO too (400 or 800 eg), and just let it change the shutter speed. Even if some colour shift is to be expected, what I find is not ideal is the fact that there's a perceivable change in color shift filter to filter, meaning if you are using a bunch of them for one same video due to light changes, color correction would be a must to equalize. Or maybe I'm too picky. It's easy to catch specially comparing stills from the ND32 and ND64 (green tint) to the ND128 (magenta), then the PL''s are back to green. ND256 also looks magenta. ND1000 is difficult to tell since it's so underexposed, I mean that filter on a video camera...I don't really know what it's purpose is supposed to be. Weird choice by Freewell on that one.
@davidsutherland3303

Great response! Freewill is known for inconsistent colour casts across their range. Also dependant on the set their ND values can be highly inaccurate between each filter. The biggest problem is... That device doesn't have any exposure assist functions. No zebras.. not even a histogram.. You should rely on the small lcd screen to judge the exposure. Nd filters are what most youtubers are trying to sell people. This is a point and vlog device. It's a big lie IMO.. You don't need ND filters which is an extra hassle to carry and clean everytime.. Freewell sent these to almost every youtubers.. They want you to think that it is a must tool.. but it is not!

Hello and thank you for your thoughtful response. Yeah, I agree in many ways. If you connect your device to the DJI Mimo app, it does give you zebras and a histogram. While I see the merit of your opinion regarding "KZitemrs" trying to sell the ND filter, I do feel they certainly do have their place for us everyday people. They are a hassle, but I personally appreciate having the options. For example, doing talking heads or b-roll is nice to have the 180 rule. However when straight up vlogging, I don't mess with the ND Filters at all. Good take though!

Something I do with my GoPro when using ND filters is I'll set everything to manual to decide which ND to use then I go back to auto shutter and ISO. That allows the camera to make small automatic adjustments when going from bright to shadowed areas. For a GoPro I needed to use a gimbal but Pocket should have no problem doing this.
@Kryptic1189

Personally I'd go with ND32 and set shutter and iso to auto. I prefer a slightly brighter image anyways, but also going with a lighter ND lets the shutter speed slow down in shaded areas without dropping below the 180 rule. I'd rather be above the 180 rule than below.

I am still waiting for my set of filters, stuck in FedX, but should arrive by 6pm... when its dark lol. On your video the 32 is best and 64 and 128 makes your face too dark when the sun is behind you imo. The polariser didn't look much different but as you say, the blue sky and white clouds, if you can find them, should make a big difference pointed away from the sun. I am in the Caribbean in a couple of weeks and that will be a big test. Man, if we lived in the same city we'd definitely be gym buddies! In your tests here, I think the ND32 was the sweet spot. I might even do the ND16 in this situation when you want to expose for faces and allow the background to be blown out a little bit. Definitely the 32 for a balance between the two and higher depending on the amount of sunlight. This video helps me out because I'm thinking I would likely use my GoPro in super sunny conditions like the beach anyway so I might not need anything beyond an ND64 for the Pocket 3 so I might be able to get away with the Freewell 4-pack yet for $30 more I can get the 8-pack and I'm sure to be covered. I do wonder if you could play around with the exposure (+/- up to 1) and end up with a more even balance for faces in mixed sun and shade. You also might be able to take a look at your scopes in post and bump up the shadows and/or highlights. The only thing I know is to make sure the scopes don't go outside of the upper ranges (depending on the scene) so I'm talking outside of my area of expertise a bit here.
