Great video, thanks. Especially liked it as it seems there aren't a lot of videos of tarp/bivvy camping on Dartmoor, most other people seem to go with conventional tents (even KZitemrs who in other videos of theirs would normally be tarp camping). I had wondered if there was some sort of unwritten rule that for more challenging places like Dartmoor a tarp was considered a bit sub par? I much prefer tarp camping to tent camping, and had hoped to do one on Dartmoor some time this year, so this was encouraging to see.
@SummitOrNothing
2 жыл бұрын
Ive done a three or four tarp camps up on the moor before now, I think many people just prefer the tents, but I like to have a bit of a mix up. This was a good time to test my new rab bag and bivvy too, so made sense. Toasty in that kit! Cheers for watching!
@TheSotai
2 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons bivi used to be more popular was because it was the ultralight way, but now we have plenty of tents that are ultralight, so the benefits of a bivi have diminished compared to a tent. A good bivi still has the benefit over a tent in warmth.

It was very touching hearing you talk about how Dartmoor has changed for you over the years. I feel like we’ve both been on a journey discovering the moor. I can’t believe it’s only been 4.5 years since I first visited. I lost count how many days I’ve been there and how many wild camps I’ve done. I was there last month completing my Hill and Moorland Leader award through Mountain Training and now my sights are set on the mountains so I can get my Mountain Leader award. Thanks for making the videos you do. Like you I started with stuff from Go outdoors and now it’s all MSR, Rab and Mountain Equipment.

Nice and snug in a sleeping bag but as soon as you need a pee omfg! 😅 Loved the experience though. Hikers with dogs🤦🏻♂️ I dated a girl who was allergic to pet hair/dandruff. And most dogs are not well trained. I had a dog run into our camp, and rolled around on my friends sleeping system shaking water inside her tent. The owners said “sorry!” and walked off laughing. Those type of hikers are the ones with ultra bright head torches who stare at you with them on as they talk to you. And say how they live the “dark”. 😂

Another great video, that walk up to Widgery cross from the car park is a killer. Bivi camping is a great experience done 3 over winter around South Devon but will be using the tent up on Dartmoor this week I think as taking the lightweight sleeping bag and th e protection from the wind really makes a diffrence. Out of interest how do you find the bag? Thinking of spending a little and upgrading the eurohike bag. Cheers for all the videos and the effort that goes into them.

Yea that hill took it right out of me. Actually my pace was down for the majority if the walk, but I don't do this to race anyway. Are you asking about the bivvy or the sleeping bag. I still prefer veiwranger. It did have auto routing but I hardly ever used it. I find outdoor active to be too cluttered and it always switches to 1:50000 when I want 1:25000. Also it always rotates the map when I'm trying to zoom. I never want my map to rotate so I want it locked to north up which you can't do (yet). Generally what I want from a mapping app is 1:25000 using as much as of the screen as possible and to show where I am on it. Some people say there is a learning curve to it and I'm sure there is but there shouldn't need to be. Mostly it's irrelevant to me now anyway as I can't walk more than a mile or so due to health problems. Thats a bit of a bugger after 25 years of walking Dartmoor.

Hope that you have managed to get out for your own adventures through out the summer. I agree that you don't need to buy top end to enjoy yourself outdoors, whether hiking or camping, especially through the summer months. Enjoyed this one Trev as with all your videos - me and wife visited Black tor and used the flat rock just to back of your tarp as our kitchen 👍😁 was tough going under foot to get there and both thought it would be much better once ‘they’ had cut the grass - any idea what time of year they head out with the mowers Trev? 😬🤔

Great video, miss Nath, my first thought about you going in the dip was cold air sinks, so think you may if been a bit warmer out of the dip.

Yea, you could be right about the cold air, I must get a thermometer at some point too and check things like that. Hope to see Nath at some point, he's been unavailable for a whole now. The show must go on though.

Love the idea of bivvy camping but by thr time you add in weight of tarp, you may as well take a tent and have doors open if you want to be more open.

12 and half ain't bad if it's all-in, tbh. That's what, 9ish base (assuming those water bottles were 1l and 0.75kg food)? It gets to be diminishing returns for rising costs after a point anyway I find. You end up thinking "if I didn't use an inner tent and just used the fly as a tarp I'd save 400g", and you then wake up with a damp quilt and realise you've another 4 nights of it. You'd drop another half at least in pack weight if you actually used the hiking poles for hiking 😂 Outdoor Active is massively better than it was 2 years back. Edit/ forgot to add: banging video mate, and yer a braver man than me for bivvying at all tbh.
@SummitOrNothing
2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Andy. 12 and a half is still much better than I used to cart around with me. But I'd need a third hand to use the hiking poles, gets awful awkward trying to carry the tripod under my arm 🤣🤣. Cheers for watching glad that you enjoyed the video.
@shabingly

@@SummitOrNothing good point that never occured to me 😂 Wonder if you could somehow use the tripod as a pole for the tarp? Small microfibre towel as padding between the two?
@SummitOrNothing
2 жыл бұрын
@@shabingly Good idea but I'd still need the tripod to be a tripod. It's no biggy to carry the poles to be honest.
