I’ve only heard a jake brake couple times, despite practically living on the highway all my life. First time was at my cabin just off the highway, as a kid: a transport truck’s jake brake went off right as it passed by while we were outside. Just about jumped out of my skin that day. I thought something was wrong with the truck until my dad explained!

The inside was NICE. It was pretty comfortable as far as the seat, placement of the pedals, steering wheel and shifter. The dash was pretty well thought out, however it rode like a basketball. It had Hendrickson rubber block suspension. You could tell the difference between the thickness of a penny and a dime if you ran them over with the tires....it was THAT rough. But TOUGH. 525 N14 cummins, RTLO 18913A super 13, 46000 pound rockwells with 3.55:1's in them. It would do 100MPH.

A Jake Brake is a type of compression release brake that helps truck drivers slow down their truck without wearing out the service brakes. Commonly called an engine brake, Jake Brakes are often used in large diesel engines on semi-trucks.

Brendan I have witnessed not one but two instances where a deer ran in front of a big rig travelling at highway speeds. The first time the deer bounced off the front side like a rubber ball and almost hit my car as it spun in the air. The second time the deer got sucked under the truck and other than a little wiggle in the cab it was business as usual. In neither case did the driver even slow down, much less stop, to assess the situation.

It sounds like a boat. I remember when I was in middle school. I had two classes that you have to go outside to the classroom, one classroom with a building itself and the other outside the school building. The school is right next to the freeway like 20 yards or something. When the classroom doors are open, everyone in class can hear the semi trucks with the jake brakes going and somebody was asking if that was a boat on the freeway and and the teacher expained how a jake brake works.

Really? Any other truckers here care to interject their thoughts and experience of straight piping their big bore diesel engines? Rob here, the village idiot, seems to think that the fuel mileage will drop. These trucks have no cat converters, have no emissions systems (the ones I am comparing at MY work) and are both electronic Cummins ISX engines. Simply put, removing the muffling devices helps get air OUT of the engine in a hurry.

Mind you, I am loaded to 110 000 pounds, going down 5%+ grades while exiting off major highways. So if a jake brake is unnecessary, why do most trucks come with some form of exhaust or compression release brake on them? Hell, even the diesel fords, dodges and chevy trucks have exhaust brakes on them. They much louder than stepping on the foot brake.

Unnecessary? It's unnecessary to use a jake brake? In this video, we aren't even sure if it IS straight piped. Those C16's are a fairly loud engine. They don't use twin turbos like their C13 and C15. Mind you, the 6NZ C15 uses a single turbo. There is a single, large waste gated turbo ton the C16. A single turbo will allow more exhaust noise to pass as there are less piping, only one exducer wheel, and larger spacings on the exducer wheel itself. Look at ANY 855 cummins as an example.
@goofyexponent

What's wrong,Rob? Your theory about straight pipes on a diesel making it harder on fuel take a walk off the map. I noticed I seemed to have shut you up permanently. You might be a computer geek, but I AM a trucker. I know what works best, what doesn't work, and so on. Bottom line, straight pipes on big bore diesel, equals better fuel economy, which equals less fuel burnt, more profits, less pollution, more time on the roads delivering and less time fueling up. Go home Rob, you're drunk!
@goofyexponent
11 жыл бұрын
That's 54 - 68 LITERS less. At $1.32/liter...that's $71 - $90 a day more profit. When your take for the day is $750, then you pump $375 into the truck, pay me $200 for a 12 hour day and then you have only $225 for profit...that's IF nothing breaks. Now, take another $100 off your profit for the extra fuel in the truck WITHOUT straight pipes. What would you rather have at the end of the day? $225 or $125? Yea, trucking is THAT bad.
@goofyexponent
11 жыл бұрын
And "marginally"....shows your knowledge of ANYTHING mechanical. We have two trucks. Identical engines, transmissions, rearend ratios, weights etc. One is straight piped, one is not. The straight piped truck gets 1.5 - 2 mpg's better than the one with the factory mufflers on it., Different drivers you say? Wrong. I AM the only driver. We have 3 trucks. one tandem, and two tandems with pup trailers. I am the ONLY driver for the company. Again, your turn.
@goofyexponent
11 жыл бұрын
Case NOT closed. Remember when I said the straight pipe gives better fuel economy? Have you SEEN the wages a truck makes, let alone the "earnings" the drivers get paid? We need to save all the money we can where we can. Our jakes are TOOLS we use, people who straight pipe just to make noise (like ricers, Harleys, etc) are just tools themselves. Besides, I must have made 10 points to you, and THAT'S the best you can do? Back to the drawing board Marvin the Martian.

The woman wouldn't take any help. I video taped her from INSIDE. Again, you can't comprehend the simplest things, but you want to program a truck to drive itself? And the car was making noise for the sake of making noise. If he had a jake brake, I would love to hear it. So long as ricers, Harleys and straight piped idiots are around in their cars I will use my jake brake in a church parking lot if I feel the need. Do us a favor and build a paper mache volcano for your next project...ok?

Steel workers don't send 55 tons pieces of steel down a highway at 65 MPH with no drivers in them. Again, the trucks in the mining operation were "beta" compared to the open roads. No cars in the way, no pedestrians, etc. What if a kid runs out in front of an unmanned rig? It knows to stop. But will it swerve if it can't stop in time? I'll take out myself or a car before I take out a kid chasing a skateboard or ball. Will a computer make that choice? Give up on me? I would too. :D
@goofyexponent

My thoughts on mining dump trucks being ran unmanned. That's fine in a mine where there aren't hundreds of thousands of trucks running around. They are computer guided to stationary targets. A loading machine (excavator, etc.) then to the cash register...where they dump. No idiots in cars to get in the way. No one gets killed in cars when the computer fucks up. As for the videos, check my channel. Don't leave any gay comments like you do here though.

Took you a month to come back with that rebuttal? Did you see WHY I crashed my car into a tree? Someone pushed snow across a road, on a blind corner and left a HUGE pile of it ON the road I came around the corner, missed the pile of snow but put my car into the ditch to avoid an oncoming motorist. If I were anyone else BUT a trucker, I would have selfishly swerved into the ONCOMING lane and hit someone innocent..but I didn't. I used what I learned to keep innocent motorists out of the mess

Cars are one thing, but consider this. A GOOD truck driver doesn't just drive. I spend roughly 20 - 30 minutes a day pre-tripping my truck. Inspecting it for any flaws. 3 or 4 times a day I will walk around it, kick the tires, look for lights out, etc. Also, you drive by "feel". If the truck starts to shimmy and shake you check for a bad U joint, tire, steering linkages. Human contact with the truck. I wouldn't trust a computer to do that...or an inexperienced person to do that for me.

Again, this is a 3000 pound car. Try it with a 55 ton truck. People freak out and want to pass it at any means possible. Imagine your google car being passed by HUNDREDS of motorcycles who cut it off by feet, sometimes inches and plow on their brakes. Suck, eh? MsFisherman1 what you don't understand is, I *don't* love jake brakes. I do enjoy the sound of an OHC flat six (or even four) boxer engine, and even own a vehicle with one of these engines with a free flow (loud) exhaust. But since I follow the golden rule, I never start and drive this vehicle before 10am. I keep RPMs low until I am away from populated areas. Open header trucks OTOH jake brake near me 7/24, disturbing my right to quiet enjoyment. This is the golden rule violation I mention.
@RobPerry
11 жыл бұрын
You don't need to go to university to learn the golden rule (which you should have picked up in kindergarten): Do to others as you would have them do to you. Don't be loud and obnoxious with your truck, and people won't be critical of your bad behavior and applauding your demise here on KZitem. Some other technology to be aware of is noise cameras that measure a vehicle's exhaust volume and snap a pic and ticket you. They're already in Canada and will find their way to the US soon. Woot!
@RobPerry

Possible explanation for your assertion of better MPG in increasing order of probability: 1) More mileage & wear on the engine 2) Different loads 3) Different roads 4) Out of tune or better tuned 5) Just like you claimed you haven't had an accident in 300K miles and then have a recent accident video on your channel, the most likely explanation is you're telling porky pies. Posts on various diesel forms talk about modest to *lower* MPG after straight piping their diesel. Again, your turn.
@BlowdownBob
11 жыл бұрын
a deer or sheep would be disastrous to a truck with out a bull bar mate, would tear the front end apart and the repair cost would be phenomenal. I have seen the aftermath of a Cow Strike on a truck with a bull bar, it went under and tore all the air lines out causing a severe lock up, as air is needed to keep the brakes off. he rolled it in the end, messy. as for your 1000w sound system, I used to work as a sound and lighting assistant and 1000w isn't all that much to be honest. but I understand
@RobPerry
11 жыл бұрын
It's like whack-a-mole with you, you raise one issue, I knock it down, then your raise another. I corner you in contradictions, you move on. So, MPG. Now we know your position, and I grant straight pipes *marginally* increase MPG (you overstate it IMO). "We need to save all the money we can where we can." Fine then, so I can tailgate behind trucks drafting and getting an extra 10+ MPG (no exaggeration)? Or is this another "I can do it but you can't" issue like straight pipes on a Harley?

Considering that 9 out 10 airline crashes occur from HUMAN ERROR, not computer system or mechanical failure, considering the computer navigation system passed with a perfect score the same exact test airline pilots pass, I'd say you'd be a fool to not want a computer to land your plane. The computer system will never be tired, hung over, distracted, stubborn (those are the major causes of airline crashes BTW), you'd be a fool to not have reliable, tested system take the controls. Trucks too!
@RobPerry
11 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's true driving a truck is difficult. But you need to face the fact that a properly designed truck navigation system will drive a truck better, faster, and more reliably than a human driver. Period. C'mon the new Boeing Dreamliner 787 is certified to take off and land itself in zero visibility conditions with no human intervention!
