Dutch viewer here: the pic of the Coastguard ship spraying water next to the ship is not a 'hit and miss'. It's a tactic to cool down the hull with droplets. You see that the burning ship is downwind from the fire-fighting ship. The ship's fire near the Azores a few years back has shown that putting out the fire by pumping millions of gallons into the ship ultimately led to its sinking. That has to be avoided at all costs. The ship is located 14.5 Nm north of the Wadden Isles. A string of Islands that stretches all the way up to Denmark. The Dutch and Germans face big, big environmental problems when things go wrong. That's why the German Coastguard and the Dutch Coastguard are taking 'turns' to keep the fire under control. A few details: a bunch of true heroes have managed to connect the burning ship with the tug boat. The Dutch salvage company that's 'on it' is the same that raised the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk and they're also the company that freed the Ever Grand from the Suez Canal banks.

Some additional info: as said in the video: nearly 3000 cars are on board. 25 electric cars (that info was available pretty quick this morning). 300 cars are by Mercedes. The other German manufacturers have not issued a statement (yet). When you look at pics of the ship, you'll notice that there are 3 bright orange 'rescue pods' for the crew to escape in case of emergency: one on the SB side, one Port side and one above the stern. All three are not used! Instead, 6 crew members made the choice to jump down ± 30m into the sea at night. Talking about panic and chaos... The person who died was brought ashore by a vessel. He's probably one of the jumping men. The 7th jumper managed to get to the rear of the ship and made a 'controlled jump' with rescue vessels close by. All others were airlifted out by the Coastguard's helicopters. The first on the scene were fishing vessels nearby. It's perfect commercial fishing water there. The Voluntary Maritime Rescue Squad (search: 'KNRM' in Dutch) with their high-powered, ultra-fast rescue ships were second, followed by the Coastguard. The KNRM has Rescue Stations all along the Dutch coastline, so they didn't need a lot of water to 'cover' to reach the burning vessel.

I'm 67 years old and have been a news junkie since I was 10 and I've never heard of a car-carrier catching fire until the last two years. This is the second one that I know of. The first one was because a battery in an electric car caught fire. Those fires burn at 5000 degrees F. and are impossible to put out until they burn themselves out. I wouldn't be surprised if this has happened again. Something needs to be done to prevent this.

Lithium Oxide. Li2O. When heated = Li 2O. Leaving Oxygen free floating. Lithium reacts with water in a extreme exothermic reaction on the level of elemental sodium. It strips away oxygen from H2O leaving H free floating. Now you have a extreme exothermic reaction in the presence of free Oxygen and Hydrogen. Next the Newly formed Li2O is reheated and Makes Li 2O . This is a cyclical reaction that continues until water is removed from the equation. Unfortunately humidity is sufficient to continue the cycle. When a person buys a lithium battery car they are buying a incendiary device in waiting.

This to stop anyone getting near it for obvious reasons, don't need more problems in the area. This is still in effect during the night. - As of now, 27/07/2013, 3:05 AM Amsterdam time, the ship is still at the same location . - Most likely location it will be towed to in case it manages to survive will be Germany, Bremerhaven (port) to be specific. This is the closest location it can be towed to and it has the facilities to repair it or safely break it down if needed. Also it will be a lot less risky then Rotterdam port as it's far busier and has a lot of additional dangers in that area.

Correction: A Lithium Ion battery fire isn't more powerful/difficult because of "the power stored in the batteries". It's the Lithium chemistry that burns. It also requires different fire fighting methods. 1) you can't just deprive it of Oxygen and 2) not being a liquid, it stays put as an intense hot spot, instead of spreading out or vaporising like gasoline. A Lithium Ion battery stores way less electrical energy than the combustion energy in gasoline, pound-for-pound AND in absolute terms. The COMBUSTION energy of a Li-Ion battery is also much less than gasoline,.. gasoline produces 46MJ/Kg, whereas the combustion of Li-Ion cells releases around 4MJ/Kg. Basically, a gasoline fire releases way more COMBUSTION energy, but in a different manner, a manner people are used to fighting and designing against. Also, a Li-Ion battery will burn with or without charge, it just requires a sufficient heat source to start. It's more likely to start when charged because any short circuit in the battery causes such a hot spot, which starts the fire.

Also, batteries arent all the same. 31% of all EV batteries are now Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) type, which cannot explode or burn when damaged. They have less capacity per kilogram than the NCA or NMC type batteries, but are cheaper, have a lot more recharge cycles and you can keep them at 100% without degradation, which is why they will replace the more hazardous types rather sooner than later. The "ow my gawd! Rolling battery bombs!" craze will fade away...

Thursday morning update: The fire is still not under control. The salvage company has airlifted (onto one of the salvages ships) a specialized crew of 8 who'll 'step on board' (to use a Dutch phrase) asap to connect a proper line between the salvage ship/tug. At least with the idea to have better control over it: towning it from the shipping lane is a 'first' onto shallower water. 'Misting' the hull has been halted: the fire makes burns holes in the hull(!!) and too much water can enter the ship, making it unstable. The big plan is to tow it to Bremen (Bremerhafen, Germany) where there's enough room and knowledge to tackle the job. Rotterdam Port is too risky: too crowded with ships, with narrow shipping lanes towards the river delta and it has to be towed along the Dutch coast - and with the prevailing western wind a potential eco hazard for the beaches. The weather forecast is pretty positive until mid next week. The German government has pledged full corporation with the Dutch. (We don't like the Germans when playing soccer against them. But basically, they're like a big brother we always can rely on in case of an emergency). And the Germans feel extra responsible because it was loaded in Bremen and some -unconfirmed(!!!)- sources mention that there was a breach of protocol about how to ship electric cars. But, as said, unconfirmed. Insurance companies mention exactly what was written in a comment below: transporting electric cars has become a liability. The effects of a fire are enormous and Allianz, a German insurance company is assessing the risks and the effects 'as we speak'.

Great video Sal. As a past maritime mariner and today a Firefighter and Maritime Historian Professor your KZitem channel and your reporting is valued by me especially on this news event and tragedy. You state in this video the fire started in the haul within one of the 25 EV cars it was carrying, spread to the deck and now out of control. Your reporting seems fair and balanced to me. Later I decided to read Google News stories on this same ship fire tragedy. I was flabbergasted to read story after story in mainstream media not mentioning the fire came from an EV car. Most MSM stories didn’t mention EV cars and the ones that did stated over 2000 gas driven cars and only 25 EV cars. One actually said this fire didn’t start from a EV car and stories that claimed it did were wrong. I walked on the side of the capsized 2017 Golden Ray car carrier in GA that also caught fire in certain compartments. Those doing the salvage told me those compartments were where the EV cars caught fire. You more than anyone know how dangerous these EV cars can burn hot and catch fire taking any big ship to Davey’s Locker.

Bremerhaven is a big car hub in Europe, mainly Mercedes and BMW while nearby Emden has a big Volkswagen plant where VAG products are shipped from, the other big car hub is Zeebrugge Belgium. As an ex service engineer for marine fire fighting equipment, we often visited these ports especially to recharge or top up these Co2 tanks for ships like this. Heck we even performed a 20-year survey there once onboard an ex DATSUN car carrier in 4 days including some welding of new pipes to the tank. Even today my former company often asks us older engineers to assist with charging these systems. These tanks do have lines leading to different sections but since these ships have some decks they can adjust in different heights and in the middle there are ramps to drive up to deck 12! You cannot make the cargo space 100% gas tight like a bulk carrier or a container ship. Anyway if you park a 20 ton Co2 tanker semi next to such a ship you see how hughe these are. If you can get onboard and if the Co2 system is not destroyed you theoretically can connect a Co2 tanker to the filling station, open the section valve for a top deck and simply start pumping Co2, this what they used to do with bulk carriers that had fires smothering of coconut sheĺls, Co2 trucks would come and go. Co2 is heavier then air, it does not extinguish a fire, it kills it by chasing oxygen away. The batteries will keep burning but Co2 lowers the temperature and will prevent the fire from spreading further. I do not know how and if you can upload pictures here but I do have pictures of the 'belly' of several car carriers since Iof all ships I visited and still visit today, tankers, chemical tankers, bulk carriers or container vessels, car carriers are by far the most impressive ones. Furthermore. these large ships only visit the main hubs, the rest of the vehicles are distributed by car carriers that can carry 500 - 1500 cars they sort of distribute vehicles. The island Malta in the Mediterranean is a big distribution center for vehicles destined for southern Europe and north Africa but also agricultural equipment, drilling rigs on wheels, Bobcats, diggers and so on are all transported by these ships, heck in the old days we serviced a car carrier that took back the Dakar Rally cars and trucks back to Europe !

Every battery in every vehicle was removed and stored and strapped down in the battery room where a continuous flow of ventilation prevented any build-up of hydrogen gas. And that was just for lead-acid batteries! Clearly some very specific protocols will need to be in place for the safe shipping of any EVs. Can brand new EVs be shipped without batteries? Can car carriers be modified with spaces to store and protect Li batteries during shipment? This is a major issue with powerful implications for the future.

One thing that came to mind while watching this was the issue of insurance. It isn't hard to imagine insurers becoming increasingly leery about insuring vessels transporting electric vehicles with lithium ion batteries without exacting more exorbitant rates. I haven't read the report you mentioned yet, so it might be addressed there. Shipping itself is getting safer, but if part of the cargo can burn beyond the crew's ability to contain it, nobody is going to want to have electric vehicles on the ship without implementing better guidelines. Of course, potential fire from the cargo is a well established risk with tankers, and maybe even the majority of ships. Again, I know very little about shipping. But I have learned a lot from watching your channel, so thank you again!

Odd how there are so many car carrier fires in so quick a succession. Either something is up with the carrier companies, or (if the suspicions about EVs causing the fire are true), there is a systemic problem with older EVs that we are only now starting to see the effects of.

10 years is quite young for a PTCC (Pure Truck & Car Carrier) and the Japanese are still the best ship builders, these ships usually have a life span of 25 - 30 years in service. You cannot really seal the different compartments these are hughe floating parkings with ramps to go up and down in the middle, the Co2 tank normally has a capacity of between 20 - 30 metric tons depending on the volume of the cargo space. To get an impression of the size : walking from the aft ramp to the fore ship takes about 5 minutes.

My heart and thoughts go out to the families of the lost and injured sailors. We visited the isle of wight it's a small island on the south coast of the uk. a little while back and we used a company called wightlink we travelled between Lymington to Yarmouth and when we boarded we with around maybe 11 other cars were strangely put on a lift and lifted up in our vehicles into this small confined garage like area next to the main passenger lounge. we exited the area by a normal looking door into said passenger lounge. So on that vehicle lift space there were a couple of teslas and a MGZS EV plus another a kia EV plus various ICE cars now that's 4 fully electric cars in a small space high up in the ferry next to the main passenger area and above the main deck area where there are more cars coaches vans and lorries etc. Now what happens if one of those EV vehicles catches fire on that ferry on a very busy summer sailing like it was when we travelled. Hopefully they have adequate firefighting equipment it's a Scrary thought indeed.

Another Dutch viewer: some years ago on the same sailing route (almost the same location) a container ship (MSC Zoe) lost a lot of containers. This had nothing to do with fire, but with a fatal "rolling" of the ship over the length axis (parametric rolling). In this case the ship rolls from the left to the right and back with a certain frequency, and it just gets worse, just like the sound with a certain frequence and loudness can break a wineglass, because the wineglass starts to resonate at that particular frequency. That can also happen with a ship when waves with a certain mass and frequency get the ship rolling. I've attended a lecture some time ago about this issue organised by MARIN, a Dutch institute which studies all kinds of marine subjects.

Prayers for a crew, and their families, of Freemantle Highway. That is horrific! My neighbor's home here burned from a Lithium ion battery in an EV. It destroyed their home. The heat blew out a neighbor's window and nearly caught my home on fire. It damaged a bunch of other vehicles, some that were parked quite a ways from the house (20-30 feet away!) We've had quite a few homes burn in my small town from EV fires. They burn incredibly hot, and firemen here say they are difficult to extinguish. They generally have to let them burn out, then put out what's left. There seem to be some serious safety issues with EVs. I'm not a fan of EVs. They aren't very safe, IMHO. We had a mechanic locally die from electrocution, as well. Scary stuff! I wonder is a Halon system would work better than CO2? Comment? Jumping off a deck that high is like jumping off a high-dive tower. Landing wrong on the water could be injurious. Thanks for the news.

Yeah, this is why there's so much research into solid state batteries. They would be much safer than current designs. The strength of lithium ion battery fire strongly depends on its charge state. A fully charged battery will be an inferno, a discharged one would be hard to even ignite at all. Maybe a policy of boarding an EV with max of 30% charge would mitigate those issues. Also it is not always the battery that catches fire, electronics does that too.
@aidaubmeg459
Жыл бұрын
O-o You are aware what happens when elemental lithium meets water?. The lithium batteries utilize lithium oxide. When lithium oxide is heated it converts into lithium and oxygen. Releasing the free oxygen. When water is added the lithium reacts with the H20 and strips away the oxygen and leaves elemental hydrogen, Now you have a exothermic reaction coupled with free Oxygen and Hydrogen. The Lithium converts back into Lithium oxide and gets heated again. Lithium batteries are a chemical nightmare of a fire. The reaction can continue for weeks. No charge needed.
@queazocotal

Powered electronics catching fire if the battery is not involved has a much lower energy. 'Failure mechanism of the lithium ion battery during nail penetration' is a paper going into what happens in the worst case if you drive a nail into the cell. Under 50% you don't get thermal runaway. They should be a tiny fraction of 50% charge, that way even worst case failures can't cause a chain reaction. It would be fasicnating to know who is verifying the charge states of these cars.

@@TwoTreesStudioI understand your point. One reason is that it’s relatively simple to extinguish a fire in a liquid fuelled vehicle. We’ve been shipping fuelled cars around the world for at least 80 years, so procedures are mature. In practise, it’s hard to envisage how a fuelled car could catch fire spontaneously. The cars are all electronic fuel injected, so no source of fuel is available anywhere but the fuel tank. There’d need to be a breach of the fuel tank and a source of ignition. BEVs can catch spontaneously & are impossible to extinguish. Does that help address your good question?
