A tour of two equivalent and iconic Louis Philippe period secretary desks and their secret compartments. These are emblematic models of the day, comparable to ones conserved in the French Ministry of Culture’s National Furniture Reserve: Mobilier National. We thus see here iconic examples of fine domestic furniture from this period, showcasing flame mahogany veneer work, and two variations of the same piece dating to roughly 1830.
The Louis Philippe period in Furniture history loosely corresponds To the duration of the reign of king Louis Philippe from 1830 to 1848. But it is during this time in furniture history that industrialization occurs, especially by the year 1840. This is why, as collectors, we tend to focus on earlier Louis Philippe pieces in good condition which were made in a way far more tethered to the early 19th century paradigm of art Furniture production rather than the late 19th century factory paradigm Furniture production.
Finally, this video serves to preserve an easily accessible online trace of these specific period pieces while shedding light on the subject of antiques as a whole (namely by presenting only pre-industrial period pieces which greatly differ from what we normally call an “antique.”)
