French Brothers Dairy in Woodstock, Virginia celebrated its 50th year as members of the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative (MDVA) at the cooperative’s 103rd Annual Meeting held last week.
The farm is currently owned and operated by Billy, Martin, and Timmy French and their children. A Virginia century farm, the land the French Brothers own has been in the family since 1872. The dairy began in the 1950’s.
The farm has 100 milking cows in a freestall barn and have free-choice pasture to go to at their leisure. The family installed two robots in 2016, which has helped the family focus on other farm tasks as well as other parts of their extremely diversified operation, which includes a beef operation, broiler chickens, a custom spraying business and crops. The family has adopted environmentally-friendly farming practices like no-till farming, rotational cropping and cover crops in order to keep their 2,200 of cropland as sustainable as possible.
