I love that you mentioned that foundation is not necessary. I'm 19 and have clear skin so Ive never seen the point of it but all the makeup tutorials nowadays have primer, foundation, concealer, setting spray.. Jesus Christ. it makes me feel like my skin is clogged up so I avoid it. good to know Parisian women do too.

Lipi Rastogi Unfortunately I have a lot of broken capillaries around my nose, and on my chin, as I age, so I always even everything out with a BB or CC cream because they are lighter than foundations. I wish I could get away with just using an untinted moisturizer! I usually just use a BB cream, just a touch of blush or bronzer, a light colored illuminating mineral eyeshadow, brown mascara, and a tinted lip balm. My goal is to look as natural as possible, to use natural products, and above all to look like myself! Enjoy your youth, I wasted mine trying to look my age, with just a little too much makeup, because I had a baby-face!

You are making the right choice Lipi! I am 57 and have never worn more than an occasional touch of concealer since I was a teenager. I get compliments on my skin all the time. Don’t think I’ve had easy skin either, I have rosacea but learned early that the less I mess with it the better. For anyone with very sensitive skin or rosacea try Clinique Redness Solutions line - calming cream, protector w/SPF and cleanser. Moisturize with DHC products. It’s a Japanese company online and their line based on olive oil. I set up my nieces and many friends with these soothing products very young and those that didn’t succumb to the lure of trendy & harsh products have beautiful skin. Smooth and pamper your skin - don’t torture it! End of my preaching. 😉

Although I am all for freedom of speech, I am even more for respect and civil behavior. We don't know why some ppl do nasty things. We can't "fix" them, change them or teach them the lesson of socially acceptable behavior. Therefore, the best is not to get in commenting, and you can block individuals who are going over the line. Either the lips or the eyes -that's how I've learned it too. I also always go for maximum effect with minimum effort. I had no idea that's the French way of going about it, I just find the idea of needing to put a lot of effort into my hair and make up in order to look nice depressing. Also, if you go all out every day you can't step it up for special occasions anymore.

I know this video is old, but it's so affirming to me! When I was 13 -- nearly 4 decades ago -- I went to modeling school and French skincare/makeup/hair was taught to us religiously. I'm relieved (and just a little smug) to hear that everything I learned was dead-on accurate. It thrills me that the beauty standards of French women haven't changed at all. It's also nice to hear that there is one thing I've done right my entire life.

Hi Justine. I was working at my computer today and youtube randomly presented me with some of your clips, including this one. It's very "haute" to be into French beauty and style nowadays, with numerous books written on the topics of how to dress, live, eat, and relax in the "French" way (yes, I've read them). I find your tips and advice super accessible and easy for the average, busy woman (French or not) to relate to. I loved your comments about hair, especially -- the French way (here in America, what am I DOING spending tons of time and money blowing out/flat-ironing/curling my hair? The worst thing about it is that, even if it looks nice, I simply don't WANT to). This world generally needs to take a chill pill (hear that, ladies?). Many of us are trying to dial it down in this busy world while hoping to remain elegant and confident. In a world where I have resisted Instagram and all sorts of others things, you're giving me an "in" back into beauty that's so refreshing (and empowering!). Thank you for your infectious smile, friendly approach, and streamlined, sympathetic advice. Merci!

I have witnessed it each time I visited paris and it (as well as aging) has affected how I do things too. Less is definitely more. No overdrawn lips, no fresh blow outs on anyone under 70. I watched girls on the metro with bare face and just slick of warm red lipstick, that looked amazing even with light hair and eyes. Or a coat of mascara and maybe some matte bronzer and gorgeous as can be. Not everyone looks the same. Women take pride in their natural features and hair texture and that's so liberating and beautiful. I have allergies and redness problems so all I ever use are French farmacy brands, Avene, Bioderma, Uriage and Caudalie being my favorites for respective products. I have managed to ditch foundation thanks to those and only use dab of concealer in case of redness occasionally, and play up either my lips or my brows, which are my best feature. Hair color is also often natural or closest to the natural shade, which again I find amazing, so I ditched hair color for years now too and stick to my natural brown. Those women love themselves, their imperfections, and their strong points. They wear nice but ultimately comfortable clothing, that lets them live without worrying about outfits.

I completely agree with the french make up & hair care. I have never been a fan of heavy make up ie full coverage foundation, contouring the face, cheeks, nose, highlighting and the use of coloured eyeshadows. maybe a tiny bit of shimmer in the inner corner of the eyes when i’m feeling fancy, and that’s it. it’s pretty similar to korean make up where maintaining healthy skin & looking natural is the main focus. Thank you so much for explaining in an entertaining yet concise manner.

I have the same philosophy with the exception that when it comes to beauty products high cost does not always equate to better quality. This applies particularly to skin care. My skin care purchases are more scientifically proven ingredients driven these days. I will admit there is something about luxurious packaging that speaks to my feminine desires however.
@mulliganstew72

Karen .c.h yes and higher end/quality skin care lasts longer in my opinion. Like I use a clinical face wash for $30 but it will last me six months. If I buy something cheap I’ll go through it really quickly. And with make up and cosmetics the packaging is important! For example, with drugstore cosmetics if you drop it once & it will turn to dust immediately, but with the higher end stuff it’s packaged so nicely, has stronger pigment, and won’t trash the make up bag because the caps come off. I have become a bit of a product snob I guess but to me it’s just like with clothes, it’s a better cost for value to invest a little bit. Free gift with purchase coat, samples, and chasing all the sales helps. However, It really sucks when everything runs out at the same time & it’s time to re-up...really hurts the wallet!!

I don’t wear makeup everyday, only on special occasions. I feel like I’m “making” myself up everyday by cleaning, nourishing and hydrating my skin twice a day. And I do spend a bit more on on moisturizers, etc. it’s my luxury that makes me feel good about myself. One thing: I take a quality multivitamin & probiotic everyday for inside beauty. 😍 I love your videos Justine! I would love to see a video on your home decor too.

I feel as though a lot of these things are rules that European women in general go by. My own mother, from Poland, always taught me that it's important to take care of my skin, that it's worth spending on quality products, makeup should never be overdone; etc ;etc. I don't feel that these are strictly "French" attributes. Nonetheless, an enjoyable video!

Dear Justine, your vlogs are so very insightful and informative. Thanks for showing us the French way of thinking when it comes to makeup and clothes. I like the fact that french women look so beautiful with the less makeup look. As an Indian, I like most things about the french, the food, language and even their houses. Also their movies and serials/ soaps ( watch them when I am bored with the usual Hollywood/Bollywood typical movies). It seems french women give a lot of thought to the way they look without going over the top. And it's a pleasure to see you smile while explaining.

Great video, thank you! I've always admired the French beauty philosophy of enhancing your natural beauty and playing on your strengths. I don't understand the mainstream makeup ideals of being unrecognisable when you take your makeup off. Fake lashes, drawn-in eyebrows that have nothing to do with your real eyebrow shape, overdrawn lips, etc. Also, French Pharmacy products are fantastic! Nuxe, Bioderma, La Roche Posay and the many others! You can't go wrong with them, especially for someone with sensitive skin like me.

i love pictures as well as the simple, clean instructions. simple for me is best. years ago my 'aunt' Natalie, at the time in her 90's, made the daily effort with makeup, hair and clothes. she went to work every day, even when only permitted part-time in her insurance business...we used to joke that her commitment set the unusual example for Galveston Island (TX) beach/tourist/bums whose main getup was shorts and flip-flops...i figured i got two out of three most of the time when I worked at UTMB (the main medical/nursing school and hospital) due to her example...even though she passed over ten years ago, her values make a difference. like Justine's reminder about food education habits, that template works everywhere.

French women seem to be very similar to italian women. When I was living in Italy, they were never using a lot of makeup, and the hair was as natural as possible. I think this is nice, but at the same time, the markets had very little options of hair products compared to Brazil (my home country). Since they generally don't change the color or the shape of the hair, they probably need less products to fix the damage. I can't be like this because I love from time to time to change my hair color and do some curls, so I really need hair products that can treat damaged hair.

You have a very infectious smile Justine. It is so interesting to see how women around the world groom themselves. In India, the beautician will 'thread' ( manipulate a thread with both hands to tweeze out unwanted hair) your eyebrows into shape. She would do it above and below the brow. This was in reference to how french women groom their eyebrows.

Hi Justine, just found your channel and love it! Many years ago I spent time in Paris, and noticed how beautifully dressed the women were. I had coffee at the same place every day, and realized that the women were wearing the same basic items but with subtle changes each day. One woman had a perfect, gorgeous coat and handbag, and would change the look with a scarf, or different shoes & boots. Quality over quantity. Just like the food. A wonderful way to live!

I am adding this very late, but I learned as a foreign exchange student many years ago, in France, students are taught to speak English with a British accent.

So glad I found your site. Love your video and you. You are so natural and make me feel good about myself. Just needed the advice you are giving. In San Francisco I saw some young french women and noticed their faces. No makeup but so natural and clean looking. I am 77 but you are never too old to improve your looks.

Over the last year or so I've been minimizing my makeup. Just a black eyeliner cateye, mascara, and a beautiful lipstick. It suits me and at 43, my skin is so much better than it was years ago. I'm delighted to see my makeup and skincare is quinessentially French!

This is my first ever KZitem comment in 10years. Love everything about your videos. I am very interested in the French messy hair style, although I don't think I quite grasped your description. Wondering if you could please elaborate further? And most importantly, I think you are doing a fantastic job with your own fashion line and your KZitem channel, I want to wish you all the best. Thank you.

I love this video, it's made me more comfortable in my own skin. I'm in Los Angeles and makeup here is very dramatic and colorful but I tend to just put concealer, eyeliner, lipstick and felt like I wasn't conforming. But this video made me realize how colorful LA is and that I'm ok as I am. I have great skin from wearing sunscreen from age 13 and it doesn't need foundation

I live in USA and I used to live in Spain. It has been a huge change about clothes. I love more the european way to dress and here in USA some areas are for dressing with short pants and t-shirt, and I adopted to wear a nice black blouses with decoration and my jeans. I only use t-shirts to go out and exercise. Thank you for your advice Justine.

I have to say, my experience of living in Paris and the south coast has been that French women have terrible dry parched hair. They look fabulous (clothes, make up, jewellery etc) but their hair is in awful condition. I also didn't find any products there that were nourishing to my hair, my hair turned dry and frizzy too. Yuk. Love French style, but they need help with their tresses (and need to wear deodorant and shower daily) Sorry if I offend 😶

Extra virgin organic olive oil is WONDERFUL for the skin as a moisturizer also! Pure organic coconut oil and baking soda is a great cleanser. Both oils contain natural sunscreen and loads of nutrients for the skin/body!

Always enjoy your videos. Here in the United States the only benefit of going to certain pharmacies is they allow returns on makeup but for YSL or Clarins you need to go to an upscale department store. As you'll see from videos on you tube there's a ton of videos about which pharmacy brands (inexpensive brands mostly) are worth buying. Thanks as always!

I don't dislike wearing lots of makeup because it can be fun, but most of the days i just want to look pretty without trying too much. I honestly think the french way of thinking is great for me, because it's all about taking care of your appearance but making it minimalistic and natural. I am too lazy to do otherwise, and makeup has always made me a little bit uncomfortable if i wear too much for a long time

How do french girls with curly hair cut and style their hair? My hair is naturally curly, though lately I've been on a straightening fix. But I kind of miss my curls! Also, do french women like to wear false eyelashes?
@justineleconte
7 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Marcelloni natural hair is much liked so if you have "wavy", slightly curly hair, you would probably just leave it as it is. Girls with allmost-straight-hair would straighten it, in general (I think). And fake eyelashes are not so commun. Instead, eyelash extensions and lengthening mascara are used.

@Melissa Marecelloni: As a hairdresser's daughter I have one very important hint for girls with curly hair, keep it in optimum condition. There are lovely light oils on the market that smell divine, and keep curls loose rather than frizzy. When you keep your lovely curls shiny and conditioned, there is nothing more beautiful than curly hair. Also, do get a good haircut, especially if your hair is very thick. The hairdresser can make your curls look there best with hardly any maintenance beyond conditioning and the good cut.

French women's beauty secret is to accept their traits as they are and make the best of them. French women with curly hair would keep it as it is and as healthy as possible, and by no means try to straighten or do anything that looks unnatural. Another hint: try to keep your hair a bit crazy with a lot of movement, that gives a lot of "character" as french women would say :)

I have to say it was my two trips to France that really encouraged me to start wearing my hair naturally curly when I was a teen! That Avril Lavigne pin-straight hair was popular and I was so ashamed of my curls and then I went to France and women wore their hair to what was their natural state with confidence. I was shocked to say the least. But that image stuck with me and so I had taken the plunge in high school and I've never looked back ;) (and I second Claire's tips!)

I love your channel and your wonderful videos !💜 I am an American woman in my 50's and I adore most things Parisian ❤ Sadly, many American women do not place an emphasis on regular skincare until they reach middle-age. Then women try various anti-aging products to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and also want to repair their sun damaged skin. American women often wear more makeup than French women, in my opinion. I applaud the French for prioritizing skincare over makeup 🌞

Really enjoyed this video. You are the nicest youtuber online. I really like the information that you so generously share with all of us. Most young girls these days in the u.s. are taught by so called celebrities and by young youtubers to wear tons of makeup and face products in order to look like their so called "idols" of "fashion". It is really sad. They are not only ruining their skin, but creating fake faces and aging their skin before its time. I am so glad that you espouse bare or near bare skin and sunblock.

Loving your videos Justine. Am from India, visited Paris recently and as you mention points about France I remember my observations and they totally match! I also like it because everything is in tune with natural living. I've lived in San Francisco and would say that a small part of the culture (eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies, enjoying the colours, using natural oils and natural products) matches French culture.
