Hi! That looks like site 734 at the mouth of the main channel. We paddled by there sept 5th and stopped to talk with a young couple. That night a bear had come in to their camp and stolen their food barrel. They found it ripped apart with no food left except 2 oranges. We made them some pancakes and took som pictures of the site. That night we camped at site 670, at the elbow. At three am. my partner woke me as she had heard a bump in the night. I ran out and found a big black bear rummaging amongst our packs. Yelling did not work. He just gave me a look and sauntered off. Nothing destroyed and did not find our food barrel which was under the canoe. He circled our camp and came out just behind our tent and started towards us. At that point a couple camped across the river yelled and made som noise with their paddles. Suddenly the bear changed his mind and ran off. With the help of our new friends we broke camp and paddled over the river. Stayed awake all night. We did however have a beautiful paddle back to Hartley Bay at 7 am. Scary but we got a story to tell.

Scary indeed. Glad you guys are safe as well. The bear(s) in the area are way too comfortable. We reported to the warden. Unfortunately, they'll probably have to act on the bear situation before someone gets seriously hurt. Although, it sure it nice to paddle at night by the moonlight :D Just wish it was under a different scenario! Thanks for sharing this info.

Curious to know why you are using a kayak paddle in your canoe?

I bring and use both styles with me, depending on the need. I prefer to paddle single-blade, but I will use the double-blade for a few reasons. 1) It's more powerful. I get in 2-3 strokes in the same time as a single stroke of a single blade. I can go much faster when I need to. 2) It gives me more control when the waves are up and the wind is strong. I can react faster to gusts and unexpected waves. 3) It gives me variety in my exercise. I suffer from chronic lower back pain. On a long paddling day, I can give my back a variety of movements to ease the pain. So if I'm by myself on calm waters I will default to the single blade. If I'm in big open waters (like in parts of this video) and/or I'm trying to keep up with my buddy in his long and sleek kayak, I go double blade. That said, I still can't keep up with my buddy :D

That was a close call scary! glad you’re both ok gear can be replaced Was there a fire ban? Fire probably wouldn’t have helped with a problem bear though. You both came home with a great story to tell the family 🙂

Thank you. No fire ban, but we don't often make fires in the summer. Most of our cooking is stick stoves or fuel canister stoves. You are correct, gear didn't matter at that point.

no shame at all!! That's everyone's worst nightmare. it's What sits in the back of my mind every trip. most people skip portaging for this very reason. If there were no bears and wolves these areas would be crawling with people. I slept on an island in algonquin after rain and saw fresh bear prints all around my tent area but i stayed. to make it worse a heavy storm hit right at dark. it was so loud you couldn't hear anything, could barely sleep from paranoia.

I had gotten a little too complacent after years of no trouble encounters. It was a bit of a reality check, I guess. It's a good reset for me. I'll be better prepared for next season with a little more wisdom in my pocket :D Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback. Glad you only got footprints!
