I have a friend who used to run a scrap yard and they had one of these shears. They would re-torque the bolts every day. All of them. Including the huge hinge bolt that went to about 1500 ft/lb. If the owners of this shear can find the operators manual they should see about tightening specs and frequency. Might make all the difference. 👍

I work at a scrap yard and we have a fortress and a genesis shear heads and we change the blades every 4 weeks, also depends on how bad they are but it’s really fun to change blades… the ones we have are much bigger and are really heavy and sharp when new but yea it’s fun to change blades

Great video but couple important things, you always want to torque the bolts on those shears with a hydraulic torque gun. the number one cause of the blades failing and wearing prematurely is not just improper shimming it it's actually the blades will move back and forth while cutting which causes them to bind up and eventually break or destroy the bolts and also cause excessive wear on the beak and jaw, a 1-inch Tire gun won't even cut it you need to use a torque gun. also you never want to weld over hard face that is a huge mistake , the properties in the hard-face will mix with the mild steel filler and can actually cause cracking microscopic cracks you won't even be able to see until it's too late you need to grind down all of the hard face completely off then do a buttering layer then you can hard-face over top of the buttering layer. also you need to preheat even if you're just doing build up work a lot of these shears are made out of a material called weld ox and they are very sensitive too cold cracking and last but not least don't ever willed downhill with dual Shield other than that great job.

Thank you for your comment. The bolts require a torque of 500ftlbs per manufacture spec. The customer torqued the bolts right after I was done with it. I do agree that if the bolts are loose it will cause many issues. As for the hard facing I couldn’t tell where it was or wasn’t and the customer was in a hurry for it. I am well aware of Weldox and you are correct I should have pre heated it. running dual shield down hill is fine for the purpose of building it up. I have been doing that for years without any issues.

@@OFW not trying to bust your balls or anything I'm a maintenance guy for shear core Fortress iv seen customers do some really damaging repairs and had to repair shears that the whole jaw broke off because of years of welding over hard face it caused a massive mechanical failure in the weldox. we torque all are bolts to 1000 to 1300 ft pounds with a hydraulic torque gone as per are specs. Genesis shears are the same.

@@triggeringliberals405 I completely understand where you are coming from. I’m not trying to be rude. Yes I could have done things a little differently. This is not a Genesis shear.

@@OFW again not trying to bust your balls but you never ever want to weld downhill with dual Shield not only because you will trap slag and risk hydrogen cracking, the main reason is it just does not bond to the material the same and when processed material is going through the mouth of the sheer it will literally tear the weld right off the surface because it's not bonded correctly trust me I've seen it hundreds of times. you seem like a good guy that's the only reason I care to talk to you about this but sometimes it's best to take your time because remember the customer's always going to tell you they need the equipment back as soon as possible they're always going to be panicking and pushing you to get it done fast but guess what? when/if something doesn't go right because you are in a hurry to get it done then it'll fall back on you anyway, best just to take your time and do it right that way it'll last a good long time before another service. Of course if they're abusing the machine and cutting stuff they shouldn't be cutting that's a different story no matter what you do they'll break it Iv seen ithat a hundred times also brand new machines only 3 months old I've seen them with blown Rotator Motors ,cylinders, cracks Jaws, it's very sad to see how some companies abuser there equipment
