People in non-American coteries still have hobbies, it's not exclusive to Westerners or the modern age. They used to do thinks like sports, reading, and loads of other stuff. I guess you could argue that those hobbies had pragmatic purposes like cultivating the body and mind but that's no different from modern hobbies which also cultivate the body and mind. The only people I can image who didn't have hobbies were super poor people but I have to believe that even they had fun once in a while.

İt really comes down to the mentality, habits of a nation or community about time distribution between work and leisure.

I think it all depends on the circumstances because I'm part Chinese and I've barely had time for hobbies because I'm helping my parents with their finances and my dad's side which is American really don't get it they tell me to get a car and I tell them I can't because I have to save money for more important things Americans live on credit and alot of Asians especially from smaller villages don't. Of course there are out liars but I understood this moment 100% I sometimes feel I don't have time for college cuz I'm just trying to make sure my family eats and has a place to live. You may call it survival tactic but I'm fine with that. Of course I have fun but I do have priorities. And I don't spend my money on vacations and ski trips
