This song peaked at 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Oct 30 1982. The album Signals moved the group into a new genre. Progressive Rock of 80's. Their next 3 albums proved it. 1984 Grace under Pressure. 1985 Power Windows and 1987 Grace under Pressure were their sound of 80's until 1989 Presto.

They basically threw this one together as a last-minute addition, because they needed a song to even out the length of the two album sides as suggested by producer Terry Brown (his last time in the studio with boys; they went with Peter Henderson on their next album). Alex does his best Andy Summers impression in this one, a lot of texture and a bit of reggae.

I pretty much grew up with Rush back in the late '70s, early '80s and this was the first song where I noticed Lee's voice was starting to get lower in pitch. I was actually quite shocked at first, because I was used to him singing/screeching in a very high register. But it sounded good! Geddy's voice matured in the '80s and sounded much nicer to the ears. _Signals_ is a great album. I'm not sure why it does not get as much acclaim as _Moving Pictures_ because to me it was every bit as good. Rush were changing their sound and willing to experiment, adding elements of reggae and new wave to their sound. Instead of staying stagnant and repeating themselves they were trying to progress.

There are so many Rush tracks to go with. Half of what Rush is involves the mind-probing lyrics. When you give them a spin, I highly recommend the lyric videos. In this one, there are a few interpretations to consider.

Whilst in the studio recording this album they found they had about 3 & a half minutes to fill so they wrote & recorded it right there. I think this is why it has a more 'immediate' feel to it. Slightly different from the rest of the Signals album.

The 'Signals' album by Rush in 1982 was a turning point for the band musically... all this new music technology was coming from Europe that created the synth pop wave of the early 80's, and Geddy Lee and Neil Peart were intrigued w/ all the new electronic sounds & beats at their disposal ... Alex Lifeson (guitar), not so much... In 1982, u had bands like Duran Duran, The Police, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, etc... pushing the envelope of pop music, while others like Van Halen, AC/DC, Scorpions, Journey, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden... were guitar-dominated music. Rush opted to explore the sonic technology and streamline their sound w/ the 'Signals' album... it was a platinum success, thanks to singles like 'Subdivisions'... 'New world man'... And rather than repeat their prog rock, guitar-heavy past records, Lee began composing new music on keyboards. But it was the last record that their longtime producer Terry Brown was involved with... (he professed that he wasn't interested in electronic music) After 'Signals', Rush took a futuristic sonic approach w/ the next few albums and used producers like Peter Collins, who was familiar w/ the new electronic technology. 'Grace under pressure' in 1984 only went gold (half million sold) but still delivered standout songs like 'Red Sector A'... 'Distant early warning'... The album 'Power windows' in 1985 had great songs like 'The big money' ... 'Mystic rhythms' ... 'Marathon'... But also sold gold.

A happy, fun, radio friendly song. It was a big hit for them so I'm surprised more people haven't reacted to it. Also notable because it's one of the few RUSH songs (up to that time) that doesn't feature a guitar solo. Maybe because they wanted to keep the length radio friendly as well. There are a lot of really good songs on Signals. I saw someone else mention "Losing it" in the comments. It's definitely worth checking out. I think Countdown is great too. Inspired by the experience RUSH had when some of the space nerds working at NASA invited them to come see a space shuttle launch.

Yes, this entire album is great. Not a bad song on it. Grace Under Pressure, Moving Pictures, and Permanent Waves are also amazing albums through and through (not to mention 2112, Fly By Night, Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres among others). Rush really does not have a bad album. Exit Stage Left is a great live album, but if you're looking for a live video collection then look for Rush in Rio.

Seriously man, keep exploring Rush. I first heard them when I was 12 years old, way back in 1978 - the day Hemispheres was released in the UK. I became obsessed with them and have loved their transition through every era and musical style. They remained uniquely RUSH. Managed to see them 30 odd times and met them on the Signals tour. The only band that still excites me !! Keep up the good work 🤘

RESPECT!!! Mia San Mia and Rush together - you can't get any better! Your Rush catalog is deep. So, if you want a live video with lyrics, then it's time you react to: "The Garden with Lyrics Clockwork Angels Tour." This is the last song on their last studio album. You've forged deep enough connection with the Holy Trinity that you will really appreciate this song and video.
