For our California vacation we stayed near Fresno and ate at the House of JuJu, Pismo's Coastal Grill, Butterfish California Poke, Tulare Street Bistro, the Red Caboose Café, and Rollie Rollie.
Frseno is a large city centrally conveniently located between three major national parks, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia. Along with the neighboring city of Clovis, this area is noted for its agriculture and is home to some great local cuisine - of which we had the opportunity to partake.
With a population over half a million, Fresno is the fifth largest city in the state. But it became obvious to us that this section of the San Joaquin Valley is known most for its agriculture as it sits among almost 2 million acres of the world’s most productive farmland. While there, we took advantage of being within a 90 minute drive of Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. But along the way, we chose some great spots to eat before and after our sightseeing.

The Tulare Street Bistro is a relatively new restaurant in a historically ethnic part of Fresno. The area’s revitalization is led by the mural covered buildings but is notably helped by the spectacular food created at this bistro. They serve up regional favorites with generous portions, friendly service and competitive pricing.
The Red Caboose Café is a family owned restaurant that has called rural Clovis home since 1994. The menu provides many standard options that don’t necessarily push the envelope of creativity, but they demonstrate how fresh ingredients, great preparation, and hometown customer service can go a long way in creating satisfied customers.
Butterfish California Poke serves up a modern twist on the Hawaiian marinated raw fish appetizer. They created a wide variety of chef-crafted bowls that turns the simple idea into a full meal - and expanded it by utilizing chicken, shrimp, crab and vegetables as a base The signature bowls bring together house made sauces, proteins and toppings to create unforgettable flavor profiles.
The House of JuJu is an upscale yet unassuming burger joint located in Old Town Clovis. They have some creative featured burger presentations with an ordering method to ensure you can pair your preferred meat with the fixings you desire. They also have flatbreads and a great variety of local beers and wines.
Pismo’s Coastal Grill serves up some serious seafood in a retro-modern lodge atmosphere. You know they are for real as soon as you pass by their seafood deli counter on your way to the hostess. The menu provides plenty of tasty options and they have a great selection of craft beers and cocktails to boot. Although the only restaurant of this name, the owner also runs two other local favorite eateries - and the gained expertise definitely shows in their polished food and service delivery.
Rollie Rollie makes fresh, hand-rolled ice cream creations - right in front of you. They start with a homemade cream mixture and pour it onto a cold slab - and then combine it with hand-selected chopped ingredients to create a variety of dessert-inspired frozen treats. This is where magic meets ice cream.
