Philip Elsmore refuses to say that Beryl's Lot is coming on LWT. I never understood the rivalry between Thames and LWT. It was not as if they were going head-to-head against each other on separate networks.

Friendly or unfriendly, they were competitors. That's how it was deliberately set-up, while they still collaborated as two of the 'Big Five', also very closely and obviously - and very well? - on sport, including co-ordinating big events. On a different note: who else spotted what looks like some Trident Television branding on the 'Beryl's Lot' caption?

@@gavinn6905 I think that trailer also may have been networked to the rest of ITV, so that hardly mattered.

@@christopherwilliams2093 More to the point, this is children's television ('Magpie' was the programme before 'The Flintstones') so what was a trailer for 'Beryl's Lot' doing in that spot?
@christopherwilliams2093

@@stuartbeacham Because I think that was the only time that ITV were able to air it before the regions actually went their own way in that slot. Also if this was 5.15pm it would be a good six-and-a-quarter years before the handover time was changed to 5.15pm from 7pm.

It isn't Phil E. voicing the Beryl's Lot trailer - it's John Crosse, and that trailer was no doubt bicycled down from Kirkstall Road.

TV was so much better back in the 1970s.

A prehistoric "Sale of the Century"...since the clip fades out on a boat I'm surprised he didn't say 'a prehistoric "Bullseye!"' Given Fred and Wilma didn't live near a beach or a river... if I recall..

Bullseye wasn't around in 1975; it started in 1981.

John Crosse heard at the top of the Beryl's Lot trailer. And a style of slide I've never seen before from YTV at the end.

Interesting time capsule of what mattered to UK citizens at the time. All three adverts focused on saving money - the first two especially. "So you save money, and the nation saves fuel."

I'm surprised that Beryl's Lot has not had to date any home-media release.

I was hoping for some rare mid-70s sweets, crisps or toy commercials, seeing this was taped between Magpie and The Flintstones. Can't imagine there were many of the advertisers' target audience watching this break. Still, fantastic to see anything pre-late 70s.

Don't forget these were the days when Thames was trying desperately hard to ensure a low audience for LWT's 7pm handover time slot.
