I played HS football against Carter in the 80's and love this scene. Carter was very, very good but they could be beaten Carter was not all black, some years they had one or two white dudes. Velt, SOC, Lincoln, Pinkston and Madison were some other straight ghetto schools that could make Carter look downright middle class. At all those schools they were really into intimidation on the field but off the field most of them were really good guys.

@@Giants-ky4zz Yeah we had 3 guys charged with armed robbery. I can't say I was exactly surprised, but I didn't think of them as robbers. One had a very bright future till that. All the teachers and staff pretty much worshipped the ground he walked on, which probably set him up to think he could rob gas stations. He got probation too, then promptly went out and committed another crime so that was that. Quite a few of my old team went out and committed crimes later and went to prison, which was not a surprise either as most of them were degenerates. Great movie! The best part is the end, when we are told the truth: Chris Comer and Odessa Permian won state the next season (16-0 record). For those here who complain that this game was really a semi-final game not played in the Astrodome. I say, give the movie makers a little leeway. This scenario is not that far from the truth: The Permian-Carter game was basically considered the championship game the week before the actual championship game. Just like the USA hockey team beating the Soviets in the semifinals of the '80 Olympics. Who really remembers the championship game against Finland?? Plus, the actual Permian-Carter game was played in a downpour, at the University of Texas.. not a great movie scenario. Permian led until late in the fourth quarter when Carter scored another touchdown. Mojo still had a chance to win at the very end, they just didn't get to the one yard line, like the movie depicts. Still, this remains arguably the best sports movie ever!! If you just have to know the entire truth, read the excellent book.

Jeff Brown you are correct! We did go 16-0 the following year. I was actually a junior that year. But started on defense as safety. Never in a million years would Id thought they'd make a movie about Permian. I can say this we had damn good coaches. And we definently played hell in practice.

+Jeff Brown............I don't know if it is the "best" sports movie of all time, but it is definitely MY favorite! I have read the book once, and watched the movie probably 25 times. The TV series did not live up, in my opinion. I live in southeast New Mexico, just about 2 1/2 hours from Odessa. I have been infatuated with the football program at Odessa Permian since the late 1970s and have had the opportunity to watch them play in person 3 times. I remember back in those days when Mojo was a national power.......right up there with Mater Dei......Bosco Prep......IMG Academy......etc. I think it is sad how the football power in Texas has shifted from the Permian Basin to DFW and east Texas. I had the opportunity to meet Mike Wenchell when he was still in high school ......the real Mike Wenchell......when he was pitching in our invitational baseball tournament. Yes, he was also in the pitching rotation of the Permian baseball team. The kid already had received national attention, but he was nothing but a class act. Great kid!

Been there and done that in the 1978 Texas high school playoffs. That tunnel that Winchell and Billingsley come out of has a low ceiling, about 7 or 8 feet max. When they walked down that ramp in the movie I instinctively ducked at the theater. Then when they step out into the noise of the stadium, it was deja vu.
