You always showcase so many interesting and different books. I really appreciate that.

Yay, a video from you! I'm glad to hear you liked Horse. I've enjoyed a couple of her novels and I have this one on Kindle. I'm looking forward to re-reading Collected Works. It is a bit long, but mostly I didn't notice it. For the last two weekends I've been meaning to go buy Brooklyn and Long Island. Maybe tomorrow! I think Stevens is one of the best unreliable narrators I've ever encountered. Maybe instead of unlikeable character, we should all just start saying difficult, or complex, character? American Pastoral is one of the grimmest books I've ever read, but so well done. I will definitely give Brodesser-Akner a shot. Wishing you a lovely weekend!

I long considered American Pastoral one of my all time favorite novels but honestly it's been at least 20 years since I read the trilogy and maybe my regard for Philip Roth has changed? So I'd like to re-read it and see. I can absolutely see how rereading Collected Works would make me like the novel even more. But I'm thinking of trying the first of the Karl Knausgaard series or maybe another of his works. Hope your weekend is fun and relaxing. :)

I rnjoyed hearing about Long Island all over again! I also have Collected Works on my cart waiting for a long book mood to hit me. I'm loving my treadmill walking while its 100 degrees outside!

I can imagine how miserably hot it is there where you are. What a good idea to get that treadmill.

I am a daily walker too. I do at least two miles when I get up and then try to get 10,000 steps every day.

Hi Sonja, it’s good to see a wrap video from you. I truly enjoyed “Long Island” by Colm Toibin as well. Ever since I learned that there was to be a sequel to “Brooklyn” I had been so looking forward to its release. You are right the characters are well developed and there is just enough description to give the reader a good sense of time and place. He also sprinkled in a few little Easter eggs for those who may have read his other novels. Years ago I read “The Remains of the Day”. It was after I had seen the movie, so Anthony Hopkins was well implanted in my brain as I read the book. The book provided the richness of Steven’s’ interior monologues. The Long Island Compromise sounds like a book I would enjoy. Have a wonderful road trip with your daughter. 🗺️ 📱🚗 😎

Hi Mary! It's good to hear from you. I also pictured Anthony Hopkins as Stevens the whole time I was reading it.

I love art themes in books too, Collected Works sound so good! Long Island sounds fascinating. I’m currently rereading The Remains of the Day. I never thought of it as primarily a love story and, like you mention, I like that the love story isn’t what you’d expect. I enjoy that it discusses many different things. So many good reads!

Hi Karla. Thanks for your note. You're right; there are so many different issues in The Remains of the Day. If you like family stories, then Collected Works is a good one. Happy reading!

Thank you for reminding me to take my morning walk! I almost forgot! 😂 And how funny that this reminded me that I was thinking of an Ishiguro book for the summer. Something long, something to sink into. I love that you’re revisiting something you’ve read ages ago! Can’t wait to hear your new thoughts on The Remains of the Day!

Hi Nathan. The Remains of the Day is pretty short, so while it might not meet your desire for a long book, it's good! But my favorite is Never Let Me Go. If you do go walking, stay cool. This morning I was startled by a deer jumping from somebody's side yard and running down our street. This was a completely unusual event. We often see fox and coyotes, but not deer. Hope you're having a good weekend.

I’ve just downloaded Long Island. Brooklyn is a favorite, as is Toibin, so I’m looking forward to it. I’m a walker, too. I usually manage 3 miles a day, unless the weather interferes (which is certainly the case these days), then I turn to my elliptical.

I was thinking of trying an elliptical at the gym but haven't gone over there in a long time. I hope it cools down for you soon. I think you'll enjoy Long Island!

I think if I lived in your climate zone, it would be rough to get out there and walk every day. I'd have to figure something else out. But it really does make me feel better and motivated.

Good to see you Sonja! You read two of my favorites, I adored Collected Works and The Remains of the Day and I agree the latter is about much more than a missed romantic opportunity. The voice of Stephen’s voice is pitch perfect. The cover of Long Island Compromise feels really retro in the font and colors, what do you think? Is it just me? I’m having an Egyptian summer and aiming to read all three volumes of Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, very much enjoying it so far.

Hi Jo. I haven't head of the Cairo Trilogy. Did you read Laurence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet? As far as the Long Island Compromise cover, I do think it's kind of retro. If I'm remembering right, it started in the early 1980s. I also wonder about the typography and why "Compromise" is broken into two lines. Interesting but I'm not sure it adds anything.

I’ve read the first in the quartet and just got a bind up of all four at my library bookstore for a dollar so I think I’ll continue next year. I had some problems with the portrayal of women but the writing is brilliant. Have you read them?

I did read the whole quartet a few summers ago and loved the whole thing. It was so interesting because everything you think you know from the first book it turned on its head in the second. I'd like to reread them sometime.
