It's crazy to think somewhere, at sometime there was a genius mind this intelligent who engineered such a thing. Not just this, but every piece of technology weather it's mechanical or digital or electrical is just mind blowing and truly the display of what human minds can achieve. Our intelligence is just like a particle of dust against these genius minds

The thing you learn in engineering (or software engineering in my case), is how to think like an engineer. When you try to think of the whole picture of something complicated like this, it’s totally incomprehensible madness. So the way you think about complex mechanisms is focus on the specific sub component you need to make. Focus on its inputs and its outputs, its parameters, and treat it like a “black box” and forget the rest of the machine. Every engineer at every level of abstraction does this and it makes it possible to build very complicated things.
@KaraSub2.0

@@IAmNumber4000so you repeat this process of focusing on only one part of the whole thing, until you build everything?
@IAmNumber4000

@@KaraSub2.0 usually with big projects like this one, each engineer is given a sub component to work on. The one fitting it all together doesn’t need to worry about how the entire thing works down to its tiniest detail, they just need to know where each sub component is and where its inputs/outputs are supposed to be.

The way this works this intuitively and automatically, and relatively quickly as well, is extremely impressive for an antique mechanical calculator like that. Most of the old mechanical calculators, including the Soviet ones I have, are pretty unintuitive and take quite a bit of fiddling around to fully figure out how they work (It took me quite a while to figure out how they worked to begin with, but division was especially hard to get the hang of, it's a bit tricky). This one has the buttons for everything and doesn't require any handles to be rotated in specific orders or anything. Man I love these old mechanical devices so much, especially the calculators.....

Imo it nicely shows how much the human cooperation can achieve. This amazing piece of technology was made by probably a handful of bright minded engineers, but it's absolute useless trash in comparison to the simplest 50 y.o. electronic calculator, not even talking about computers and smartphones. They're the marvels of modern technology made by millions of people for hundreds of years, starting from electricity and ending with trillions of transistors on tiny chip doing in microseconds what this calculator couldn't do for a thousand of years. And they're in pockets of each of us.

An adding machine. This one is electric. I remember the adding machines that were purely mechanical. After every set of numbers pressed, you would pull a lever on the right side. My uncle used to fix these and typewriters. You think computer code is a lot. Imagine having to know and understand every part of this and numerous models and manufacturers and how to fix it. That skill is almost lost to time.
