Fridge Warm But Freezer Cold - Jenn Air Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Not Cooling on Top or Defrosting

I was having a problem with a warm refrigerator but at the same time, the bottom freezer was staying cold. What I found was that continual frost build up was blocking the cold air duct from entering the top fridge section. The frost kept growing on the freezer evaporator coils until ice filed the duct that supplies cool air to the fresh food compartment. And even though the compressor was running, the refrigerator was warm.
My temporary solution was to unplug the fridge once a week for 10 to 12 hours to defrost it. But as you can imagine that was extremely inconvenient on my Jenn Air fridge. The problem was caused by a bad circuit board that wasn't initiating the automatic defrost. In this video, I'll show you step-by-step how to remove and replace the main circuit board that runs my Jenn Air fridge. The main control board, also called a Jazz board is located inside the housing for the temperature controls.
But I encourage you to watch this video all the way through before attempting your own repair. That way you're familiar with the entire process before starting on your own fridge. I had to detach the entire upper cover to get to the Jazz board. Start with a flathead screwdriver and gently start prying down along the front of the seam and on the sides. Just insert a screwdriver or plastic tool to wedge these loose.
Don't forget to unplug the fridge before starting. Then detach the wiring harness. With the panel out, it's easier to separate the main cover and the control section. To detach the larger wire harness on the circuit board, squeeze the tab underneath while pulling straight out. Now unplug the smaller harness. Then there's one more sensor to remove.
The Jazz board is the brain of my Jenn Air fridge and t controls every function including defrost which is the cause of my warm fridge problem. At this point, we're done with the most difficult steps! I ordered a new circuit board from Amazon and at about $40, it was quite a bit cheaper than original manufacturer parts. Which by the way were listed at over $170. This Jazz board works in my Jenn Air as well as many Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana refrigerators.
Comparing the new board with my old one, it looks similar enough but the new unit ships as one piece. So before installing this, locate the seam scored through the length of the plastic. When I push my thumbs in the center and gently pulling up the sides with my fingers, the circuit board will fold and eventually detach.
Now remove the old circuit board by gently lifting the center locking tab to release the upper part. Then do the same for the other part. At this point, I can start reversing the entire process. After everything is back in place, the new circuit board still needs to be programmed. Here's how to do it.
First, locate the fridge code found inside the refrigerator compartment. Then plug the fridge back in, it seems like it's running but I can't just leave it like this. To program the new circuit board hold down the door switch. Then press the freezer down button three times within 10 seconds and release the switch. The display now says P E to indicate we're in programming mode. Now press the freezer down button once. The display now shows zero zero. Here, use the fridge and freezer up buttons to enter the refrigerator code from the sticker. To lock in this setting, press and hold the freezer down button until the numbers start flashing. Then finish by pressing the door switch once and now the fridge will operate normally.
At just over a week, I can confirm that the defrost system has been working and the fridge compartment has been staying cool like normal. You can order the same replacement circuit board I used by looking down in the description.
Replacing the main circuit board can be intimidating but if you follow along with my video, I have confidence that you can do this yourself! If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button to stay up to date on all my DIY repair videos!
