Ola Ola from New England..Some of those tones are straight off of the DIRT album... I never considered AIC grunge bc they were always way more doomy and metal.. Fun fact: Jerry got those nasty tones on that album bc Eddie Van Halen, at the end of the 6 months opening slot AIC did at the end of the FACELIFT cycle, gifted Jerry Two full Evh stacks a Friedman and 2 custom Evh guitars...Sorry for the rant lol..🤘✌️
@BrewReview

Not entirely. It's well documented by a post from the engineer who helped record these records on Gearsluts from back in the day that Dirt and Facelift had complex recording chains. Apparently, three separate amps were used during recording on each track, one for low end, one for high end and one for mid push. Cantrell's main amp at the time of recording that saw action on every track (double and sometimes triple tracked) on both Facelift and Dirt was a JCM 800 that had been modified by Reinhold Bogner of Bogner amplification. There was also a Rockman preamp in there somewhere. Friedman didn't really get going as a manufacturer until a tad bit later on in 1994 or so, though he was working with Egnator as his circuit mentor during the AIC early days.

The JBE mode is diode clipping which makes it quieter. Diode clipping and low watt amps aren't ideal for playing with a band unless mic'd up. This is a great sounding option though, if that isn't what you plan to do with it.

One of my ATF amps! I typically HATE EL84s but this amp actually uses them well. It does sound virtually identical to the JJ-100. It’s a rock amp, but gets surprisingly heavy! The distortion tone is one of my favorite sounds on earth. It definitely favors passive pickups and tunings above C. Using a Duncan JB range pickup from whatever brand, it is instant AIC/Cantrell tone. Highly recommend using Jerry’s settings too.
@Faboofighter

I love this amp, but I personally feel it sounds better and more aggressive when the presence is higher... but perhaps the presence is lowered here for the lower tuning. I feel like the JJ Jr. is a somewhat polarizing amp, because it's not quite tight and scooped enough for some of the metal crowd, but it's a bit too compressed and sludgy for some of the classic/alternative rock people. It falls in a strange middle ground, but that's generally Jerry's tone, which is neither "metal" nor "classic rock", so it makes sense the amp is voiced the way it is. What I love about the amp is it's particular high gain saturation while still having great string definition. I tend to agree with the EL84 comments, and I think Dave Friedman said it sounds identical to the larger JJ at lower volumes, but can't keep when it gets to a certain louder volume... I'm sure that's the result of the EL84s, as the pre amp sections of the 2 amps sound a lot closer. Like you said, if it's mic'd it shouldn't be an issue with a live band. It would have been interesting to see Dave make a 20W JJ with EL34s, but for some reason he's been very hesitant about doing that with the 20W amps. Marshall did that, but I don't know why Friedman won't... then again, I'm not an amp builder, so what do I know. Regardless, it's still one of my favorite amps around today.

If you dime the gain and bass, pull the mids and treble back a bit and keep the presence up the thing gets really gnarly. In higher tunings it stays tight but when I plug in a 7 it needs a OD. The speaker and cabs make a massive difference; for me this amp works best with V30/Greenback combos and G12H-75s. It’s not a metal amp at all but you can get it there with the right OD push and cab.
