A HUGELY important advantage of the Friedman Distortion pedals ( as Michael Nielsen also noted on his excellent channel ) is that unlike most "Dirt Boxes" that just sound like their riding on top of a clean channel, Dave's pedals become a PART of your amp tone and sound and react that way as "one" entity.

It seems that the mid control is a mid boost control. The pedal is very mid forward in Michael Nielsen’s demo as well. In Henning Pauly’s demo of the Dirty Shirley pedal he said Dave Friedman told him that the mid control is boost only, so perhaps this is also the case with the Small Box pedal?

Love this. The BE OD is great but it’s a pretty overwhelming high gain pedal (in a good way), and while it does that beautifully, it feels like this has more on offer in terms of gain options and flexibility plus the opportunity to stack it in front of a clean amp with something like a Klon is exciting too. Terrific demo Bea - thanks!

I've got both the BEOD and the small box. I run it through my mini rectifier clean with the eq set flat. Using mainly PRS 245 or my Gibson's AFD or 60's standard. I can really dial in that marshall JCM/jubilee 80's tones. Slash tones are no problems. If your looking to recreate that GNR tone...turn down the gain and let the guitar (Les Paul) do all the work, sweep the volume and tone to get it dialed in.

I think the low end thing it's totally deliberate, as the real Smallbox amp also has a lot less low end than the BE100. It's just the way that amp it's voiced, more mids and treble, less bass. More vintage/classic sounds than the BE100.

I recently trialed the Small Box and BE-50 deluxe at home. First the Small Box arrived and I thought WOW, then the BE-50 turned up and I was floored by the shear amount of control over the tones and EQ, including a more saggy triode (half powerish) mode but I didn’t care for the clinical/dry Buxom Betty style clean channel. I’d heard the SB pedal was coming out and started to think I could get the BE-50 and the new SB pedal and use it always on. Then I had another idea... what if Dave Friedman could make me a BE-50 with Plexi channel mod instead of Buxom Betty... He’s making it for me right now. Squeezing in an extra mid control on the front panel. Yes it means my custom BE-50 Deluxe is now the same price as the BE-100 deluxe ($300 upcharge) but the BE-100 doesn’t work for what I want in combination with my other amps. Boy I cannot wait to hear and feel the result of this gamble. Having said this I will still keep this SB pedal in my mind for use with any fender style amps I wish to give some stick. Hmmm I also just noticed the Friedman website is doing 15% off their pedals and some other accessories for the holidays until Dec 7th. Sweet 👍
@djt6546
3 жыл бұрын
@Joseph Robb That’s right, but that’s not what my post was about. The BE-50 custom amp Dave Friedman is currently building (and signing for me 😬) is getting the same Plexi style channel 1 as the Small Box (or BE-100) instead of the Buxom Betty Clean which is on the stock BE-50. I just think like PeachGuitars and many others (including Bea’s past comments) that Friedman’s version of a channel 1 Plexi tone in his amps is divine 🙂 Further more this new Small Box pedal also sounds fab. So I might still get the pedal in addition to my custom BE-50 to work with Fender style amps 👍

Traditionally, overdrives have almost always been used to push the front of the amp (guitar>pedal>amp input) I don't like assuming that with these demo's. So, I'll ask, are you putting this into the actual effects loop of these amps? Or, straight through the front of it. Sounds spectacular!
@ryans9029
3 жыл бұрын
Not at all true. Most older overdrive don't even get much above unity gain. If that were designed to simply push the preamp, they would have clipping and colorful tone stacks. They would be boost pedals. They were all designed to make an amp distort at low volume, in the days when it meant extreme volume levels to get distortion. The name overdrive and distortion are descriptors... Not actions. That create the sound of overdrive and distortion... They don't actually overdrive and distort. Using them "to overdrive" a preamp is a more modern take.
