Ross walked Carol down the aisle in her wedding to Susan. Chandler gave up Janice so she can return to her husband. Rachel fulfilled Mindy's wish to be the maid of honor at her wedding to Barry. Phoebe carried Frank and Alice's triplets (she was happy to do it but heartbroken when she couldn't keep one). Monica gave up her dream wedding dress to Chandler can have his band. Joey, he's done a lot of kind stuff, but convincing Rachel to move in with Ross so he can be more involved is one that comes to mind.

But all of them did all of those things because it might them feel good about doing the right thing. They got to be the good person. Or it made them happy that they made someone else happy. And they wouldn't have done any of those things if that hadn't made them feel good about themselves. So not entirely selfless.

GalaxyGamer. There are certain actions in which we might not feel good doing it. But we feel “less pain”. In your scenario, your moral brain is compelling you to give up on your dream girl, cause not giving her up and breaking your friends heart would make you feel worse than losing her so your friend may be with her. Therefore, still selfish. No action humans beings do fall out of the concept of “self preservation”, “pleasure seeking” and “procreating”.

He made logical arguments and his position was backed up by overhelming amount of evidence and he tried to present some of that to Phoebe that didn't care. Ross was speechless because Phoebe made argument attacking Ross character rather than his position. She made incorrect argument that he abandoned his position, despite he didn't but simply admited that there is very small chance that he can be incorrect. If audience thinks she won argument that speaks more about the audience and how susceptible it's to emotionally charged rethoric.The only way I can see Phoebe being a victor if we accept that shaming your opponent out of argument as legitimate tactic to win argument, what wouldn't deterimine in any way corectness of argued position, at best popularity.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with feeling good about helping someone. Joey is kinda right in saying there's no selfless good deed however he's wrong in the stigma he's attaching to that statement. If your own satisfaction is the only thing you get out of it that is as pure a good deed can be. It's only when you have an agenda that the good deed will lead to you gaining something else that should attract the kind of ire Joey is throwing.

A deed that didn't make you feel good? I had to take care of an elder relative when I was young. When all I wanted to do was go out and have fun. It was horrible each day was a nightmare. And it didn’t take long before I started to hate him. And myself. And wishing he died. I sure as hell wasn’t happy. And I did it so I don’t feel worse than I already felt. And when he died I was so relieved that this nightmare was over. _“People say you should always do the right thing but sometimes there is no right thing. That moment where the episode ends and you wonder how Joey could have a philosophical argument like this? Then you watch the episode again you remember that Joey bought an encyclopedia Britannica,volume V. What philosophers name begins with V? Voltaire. A famous French philosopher with a cynical view on God, religion, and human beings. Most likely he read about Voltaire in his V Encyclopaedia, and now believes that there are no selfless good deeds. I believe an example of a selfless good deed (based on their criteria ) could be something like giving you're seat in the subway to someone who needs it more . A lot of people give their seats to those older than them. sure you may feel good about it almost every time. But it's such a common occurrence I'm pretty sure someone somewhere just subconsciously did it cause it's the right thing to do and nothing more. Good deed without feeling good about it.
@PrimetimeX
6 жыл бұрын
Nah. If you feel good about it or think there is some greater purpose to your deed, its still selfish because you are thinking of yourself (conscious or subconsciously) when acting altruistic. The only example of a selfless good deed is one in which it is impossible for that to occur. To act selfless is to essentially not even really possess a consciousness. If you think, you are. If you are, your evolutionary instincts dictate your motives. Thus, your actions follow your motives. There is always capital to be gained outside of materialism. Emotional and social capital play a big role in decision-making. But regardless, both are inherently selfish.

How about when parents sacrifice themselves for their kids? Imagine a single mom who became pregnant very young without planning to be, alone without no one to help her, working her ass off, hungry, begging on the streets for money so she could buy her child some food?
@artyomalekseyevich5927
5 жыл бұрын
@@corsariocapitao The child is her offspring, it's in the parent's genes to take care of their child because that's how the offspring survive, it is still selfish because the parents wants something to be left of them when they die, and the need to be selfless with their children is so they survive and pass on their genes also. The selfish reason is passing on your genes. From the moment you are conscious like Primetime said, you ARE selfish, you can't BE Someone else, you are YOU and can't experience anything but your own experiences.
