Since my celebrity memoir reviews tend to get attention beyond my regular audience, I'll throw out a small disclaimer: I'm here to discuss the book. If you have strong, negative feelings about the author, I would like to suggest not clicking on a *book review* that you know will never convince you to read the book. Watching a video on a subject that is sure to upset you doesn't sound like a lot of fun. In any event, thanks for stopping by 😊

I am a senior lady who although marginally aware of Matthew Perry as an actor I had no idea of his dance with death and destruction all these years. I do believe that he wrote this book to send a message of hope to others suffering similar afflictions. I also believe that by re-living these nightmarish events he warns himself as to how truly traumatic and utterly devastating these have been. I am glad I bought the book. I never purchase a book on the merits of who will profit from it as that would place me in a judgement seat that I’m not worthy to occupy. I have no fame, no money, no connections but what I do have is profound compassion for anybody being ravaged by illness. Any illness. The sufferer’s fame or lack thereof as well as economic status is irrelevant to me. I wish Matthew a full recovery and a happy and peaceful life. Thank you Olive, this old lady loves your reviews and what I learn from them. Peace to all. 🙏

I'm not sure I've ever been so moved by a comment. Your words of compassion really touched my heart and I needed them so much today after seeing a lot of judgment towards Matthew Perry start popping up here, in my normally very kind and understanding comments section. Thank you so much for these beautiful sentiments - I'm truly honored that a person with a heart like yours enjoys my channel. ❤️

Read this book a few days ago start to finish in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Not a pity party, but an honest, raw, self-aware look at his life and his life choices. This memoir and Viola Davis' memoir "Finding Me" are the two best memoirs of the year for me (so far)! #nonfictionnovember

The Keanu Reeves hating plus him moaning about only being offered 50k a week (which went up to 175k a week) which STILL wasn't good enough for him after Friends really made it difficult to like him despite the difficulties he went through. Interesting but conflicted on this one.

Mel, I too didn't understand the Keanu Reeves thing...not sure I ever will. The money stuff, that's non essential to me. Once you're on a show, it is what it is. None of the rest of that really even caught my attention. But Keanu, yeah, that was kind of weird. lol

Most of the early press for this focused on things like the Keanu Reeves joke and his Friends salary, so it was hard for me to get an accurate sense of the tone of this book. I really appreciate knowing how candid it is about his addiction issues. I was on the fence about picking it up, and while I now know I'll skip it, I wouldn't have known it was best for me to do that if it wasn't for your insightful and very gracious review. You've saved me from what would probably have been an extremely uncomfortable emotional experience, and preserved a big chunk of my mental health. Thoughtful, engaged reviews are so important for reasons like this and I'm so, so grateful to you! Thank you!

I had planned on picking this up for Nonfiction November but then I read about the Keanu Reeves comments and that kinda ruined it for me. I just can’t. You’re right, somebody should’ve caught that and toned it down - the fact that he now feels like apologizing for what he said doesn’t fix it for me; quite the opposite actually.
@abookolive
Жыл бұрын
I totally understand why you feel put off by that. It's a shame that such an unnecessary comment he made is what's becoming most well known about the book, when reading it does give a lot of insight into what it's like dealing with addiction. I really wish he hadn't said it and I wish the media wasn't so hungry for drama, drawing attention to it further, and probably making Keanu Reeves feel even worse about it.

I am currently listening to this book on audio. Yesterday I was over halfway done when I heard that Matthew died. Such a strange thing to happen when I'm listening to his audiobook and listening to him talk about his near-death experiences everything that he says in this book. It makes this book 10 million times more impactful and sad. I have about two and a half hours left of the book to listen to but so far I have learned a lot about Matthew. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook and hearing it in Matthew Perry's voice. Olive you left a great review!

Olive, thank you for this very respectful review of Matthew's book. I saw Matthew's book at Target around Halloween time, 2023. I was thinking about buying it because Matthew Perry was my favorite friend on "Friends" but I didn't. I also saw a small pumpkin with a bat cut-out -- like the Batman sign. After Matthew Perry died, the book was gone and so was the pumpkin. I finally order the book. I was watching videos about Matthew Perry on "You Tube." And then ... I found out that Matthew Perry reads his book on "You Tube." I listened. He wrote well. I have the book, now. The book is definitely a GREAT piece of literature. Really, it is. Matthew was a VERY smart and sensitive man. He had such a great sense of humor. He was a genius, who didn't want anyone knowing how smart and caring he truly was. I didn't really watch "Friends" when it was being made. I watched it when it was in reruns at times but I wasn't particularly a fan of the show, then. I have been watching clips, now, on "You Tube" and now, I can say I am a fan of the show. Olive, why couldn't you and I have known Matty when he was alive? I sensed the fact that he felt alone during his life. Had we known him, he wouldn't have been SO alone. He should have been surrounded by friends like us -- but I understand. The world is not kind at times. People take advantage of people like Matthew. People probably wanted too much from Matthew. He had to protect himself. He was a target of the tabloids. Hollywood made him a target because he was "famous." My dad used to tell me, "Anonymity is overrated." I wanted to be an actress, myself, but I opted to entertain my audiences in their rooms. I had the privilege of being a nurse. After every shift, on my way home, I would award myself an Emmy because I succeeded in my quest for the day -- I made people happy and feel special. I feel like I was able to understand Matthew Perry. Oh, yesterday, I bought myself a Batman keychain. -- to always remember our friend, Mattman!!! No-one can hurt our friend, Matthew Perry, now. May he be at PEACE while making the angels laugh and smile. Olive, your book reviewing ability is great. I hope to see more reviews of yours on "You Tube," soon. Thank you. -- Sharon

I love your review. And i LOVE Matthew Perry. But in the book i got the feeling that he didn't take the full responsibility for his addiction. He mentioned the medicine at his 2nd month of age as a reason, the divorce of his parents, the absence of his mom coz she had to work.. etc... And i think this is not very smart of him knowing that the reason of writing this book is to help people.. my 14 year old daughter got through a lot as she was a child.. so when she was listening to the book with me she showed me that she has so much in common with him as a kid and excused him for drinking at a very early age.. which made me worry a little bit. Also i agree with you that he mentioned too much unnecessary details of other celebrities! Otherwise I loved the way he wrote the book and the way he read it . Update: i just finished the book.. he seemed like he admitted that it's his responsibility and not his parents'. I loved the book..

I think you did a great job capturing the feel of the book and not just getting bogged down in the press snippets. I believe whoever promoted the book did it a bit of a disservice with some of what they released. Context is everything, and seeing how all of these things play out in the bigger picture of his life is huge to get a complete, albeit sad, picture of how one or two life choices on the parts of his parents and by MP himself could change the trajectory of his life. Knowing how much he gave us as Chandler largely under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol makes me wonder where his career could have gone without the constant fight to show up to work every day and manage his addiction. He is a fantastic actor, and I miss him on my screen.

This memoir sounds amazing, so I was surprised to find that there’s not as much traction for this book as I was expecting. Granted it was released not too long ago, and it’s not doing bad, but considering how famous Friends is I had assumed the book would do better than it currently is. I can only imagine how fast this book would have sold had it been released during the TV show’s run time or shortly after the TV show ended. Anyway, I had no idea Matthew Perry was Canadian. I’m so used to all these famous people being Americans.

No, I don’t think your opinion of Friends would distract too much from the book. Much of the stories around Friends involve how he got the part (and how that played into his friendships and relationships at the time as well as the addiction that was already starting to take hold) or around how his addiction affected his work. But the actual Friends content isn’t about the show, but more about how “the big terrible thing” affected his life around his work, including his movies and not just the TV show.

Do you really think an editor would not have caught the Keanu comments? Why blame the editor? These tell-all books thrive on this. It's what makes them sell. Whatever was in that book stayed there because they wanted a hit, a best seller. No editor was going to stand in the way of that happening.

I listened to this one on audiobook, and although I was a fan of Friends, this book did not endear him to me at all... in fact, he came off as a whiny entitled person with a victim mentality who learned nothing from his problems and wasn't humbled at all by all this difficulty he suffered. I'm not minimizing what addicts go through and I applaud anyone who is able to get sober or is trying. Its just HIS personality was off-putting to me. Also, I'm not sure how being from Canada would explain his lack of training time - there have ALWAYS been INDOOR tennis courts readily available in Canada ALL YEAR ROUND. I would know, I live here and I'm the same age as he is, so that excuse doesn't fly. Sorry Matty, I rate your book 2 stars out of 5.
