Fun Fact: There actually was a weekend late night horror movie TV program called Fright Night, which aired in Los Angeles in the 1970s, hosted by actor Larry Vincent, who starred as its host, "Sinister Seymour." Not the best in Hammer Films Dracula series; but a fun entry none the less!! I’m a huge fan of Hammer Horror. In 2007, I had the great honour of meeting Sir Christopher Lee & got to speak with him at length about his career with Hammer Films; & the now legendary film that is, The Wicker Man. Even late in his life, he was as imposing as you could expect. I’m 6ft 2” tall & standing next to him, he made me feel small.

Vampires are actually able to shape shift into numerous animals. The animals are usually associated with the night, nocturnal animals like wolves, bats, cats, rats and etc. They can also turn into mist or fog. And the reason Jerry is always eating apples and whatnot is because part of his bat DNA is a fruit bat. 🙂

There is a sequel, which I think is very underrated. It is definitely worth watching. As for the holy water, it wasn't holy water, it was tap water, when Peter Vincent was on the phone with Dandrige, and said he the father bless it himself, he was joking around with Dandrige. That is why Dandrige agreed to drink it. I love this movie, I watch every year at Halloween.

It's interesting how the movie shifts from a comedic horror to full on serious horror about halfway in. It has elements of comedy but doesn't skimp on the terror, which is difficult to do without being jarring, but in this case it works. It's a great homage to Hammer Horror.

There is a sequel Fright Night Part 2 (1988). The director Tom Holland would later direct Child's Play and actor Chris Sarandon who did Jerry Dandridge in this movie would also do Detective Mike Norris in Child's Play. The special effects in this movie were done by Richard Edlund who also did the special effects for Ghostbusters (1984). The idea for Jerry to eat apples was actually Chris Sarandon's idea to make Jerry a fruit bat, otherwise Chris wouldn't have done the movie.

Roddy McDowell is a veteran of science fiction and horror, Jen. 😁He was in films like Planet of the Apes and The Legend of Hell House(which I highly recommend), and the TV movie Night Gallery. His character, Peter Vincent, is inspired by the old horror movie actors of the 1960s like Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, who starred in the old Hammer Studios horror films. Nice reaction to this well made movie. Just some FYI: 1) Peter Vincent honored the "Reborn Christian Agreement". Dandrige held the water by the fire checking to make certain it was just tap water before drinking it. 2) In Vampire Lore, Vampires are able to change into many forms including Bats, Wolves, and Fog. 3) Dandrige was eating apples to represent being a "Fruit Bat Offshoot" of a Vampire. 4) Dandrige couldn't heal from Charley's pencil attack because the wood splinters needed removing first. When Peter Vincent removed the stake from Evil Ed, there were no splinters so Ed was able to heal.

Hi Jen, Glad you got to this one, you should check out the sequel. As a long time horror fan I can tell you most stories and games vampires can turn into bats, mist and wolves at will. Werewolves (usually) stand on two legs not four. Vampires usually have minions to watch over them, humans under their charm, even werewolves in some stories. Also you missed something during the watch. Peter Vincent says it will be tap water not real holly water when they are talking to him on the phone. I was hoping someone would react to this movie. I've pit it in a few comment sections as a suggestion during Halloween season. This is one of my favorites. I don't usually do a lot of scary movies, but this one I love. It's scary, sexy, and funny. Me and my brother still quote lines from this movie. "YOU'RE SO COOL, BREWSTER!" "MMM MMM. HIS DINNER'S IN THE OVEN." Amy's mouth reveal was the scariest thing. It freaked me out. Oh, btw, that actress may look familiar to you if you've ever watched the Married with Children show. She played Darcy. Roddy McDowell was an A list actor from years ago. He was in the original Planet of the Apes movie, and countless others. The Vampire, Jerry, played in the movie PRINCESS BRIDE. Maybe that's where you've seen him before. Oh, you should see Andy McDowell in OVERBOARD with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It's so good...if you like 80's romcoms. A few more suggestions: THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, the actor playing Charlie was in a really good movie that came out some years ago. It's a mystery thriller with Hillary Swank and Idris Elba,q called THE REAPING. So freaking good and suspenseful.

@@pathatfield2543 Oh, I'm not mad. I'm well aware that Peter Vincent's words were inaccurate as far as the slasher movie genre went. lol I've complained about that myself. Cool reactions. I just discovered your channel today. I've seen this movie several times a few years back. I think it's a good movie for it's time. You might have missed seeing a few things. When he drank the water and you were wondering why nothing happend to him, that was because it wasn't Holy Water. A few scenes back when they were talking to him over the phone and he said that he wouldn't do Holy water, Peter said to tell him that it's just ordinary tap water. All he has to do is just sip it. But I think you were talking durring that part so you must not have heard him say that. And the only reason they went there in the first place was just to humor Charlie. None of them believed that the guy was a vampire. Not until Peter held up that mirror and couldn't see the guys reflection. When he was whistling when he was going into Charlie's room, that was as old song called "Strangers In The Night". I think that was a pretty appropriate song for what he was doing. It wasn't the looks that was keeping Amy there. Vampire's have the power of mass hypnosis just by looking at you if they choose to use it. The reason that Peter and Amy looked familiar to you might be because the actress who played Amy a few years later played on the sitcom called "Married With Children". And the guy Peter played in the original movie "Planet Of The Apes". He played the main ape named "Cornelius". He's also appeared quite a few other movies. But I enjoyed watching it again because you had great reactions to it. Thanks.

Fun Vampire Facts; - Depending on the lore, vampires have the ability to shape shift into bats, wolves, or even mist/fog. - Vampires have no reflection in mirrors because they have no soul (An old superstition would have the mirrors in a household turned to the walls, or covered so the soul of the departed did not become trapped). - Vampires cannot cross running water. - All religious symbology is at least offensive to vampires, if not harmful.

I've also heard the mirror thing explained as they aren't truly there. They exist in hell and the vampires body in the real world is just a projection.(think something like a more solid ghost, which is also why they can shape shift) Which is why they can't truly be killed only their body destroyed.

@@markcarpenter6020 I have to admit, that's not one I had heard before, then again, the lore has a tendency to change depending on who's telling it/the medium it's being told in... ;-)

@@DV80s yep. Stoker actually got most of his vampire lore from Irish vampires not eastern European vampires (strigoi) like most people think. I always found it fascinating that every culture and civilization on earth has a vampire myth. It always made me wonder if maybe in the distant past there actually was a hominid species (like neanderthals) that had a habit or culture of drinking blood.

I think that Billy Cole was a Ghoul. Vampires make Ghouls to guard them and keep them safe during days and they can move around in day light to search and inform them etc. And there is indeed a sequel, Fright Night Part 2(1988), which is also pretty decent.

I have been waiting for this review. You have just watched one of my favorite movies, and indeed one of the coolest movies from the eightys. It is a great mix of fun and fright. There is a sequel, but is is nowhere near as good. This movie stands alone. Fun fact, my ring tone is currently the fright night theme song.

I know I am one year too late but the reason why the main vampire , Jerry, is eating fruit in this movie is because the actor (Chris Sarandon) decided this would be funny as he read that most vampire bats are actually fruit bats that sometimes drinks blood but they mostly eat fruit. And Sarandon thought that; "Jerry could still have some fruit bat dna in him?". I just thought it was a cute lil' fact!

AWESOME REACTIONS! Love it, Jen! Fright Night is one of my favourite movies, it's creepy AND fun. I prefer THIS movie to "Lost Boys" because it's so much more fun. It's a fun, scary romp that's really awesome for party viewing. Love this movie! Great reactions, Jen - you obviously enjoyed yourself immensely.

No, Jen, the movie you see Peter Vincent appearing in on television is NOT a real movie. It's a fake movie scene created specifically for Fright Night, but taking inspiration from the old Hammer Studios vampire films of the 1960s.

@@markcarpenter6020 B movies they may be,but the success of their early horrors virtually revived horror at the movies, which had become either giant bug flicks or the silly stuff coming from AIP.

Werewolves and vampires used to be sorta one in the same. Dracula could turn into wolves, bats, and "mist". The howling wolf at the start is an oblique reference to Bela Lugosis Dracula.. where a wolf howls.and he says "the children of the night... what music they make". The apple thing I think was Chris Sarrandon's choice... it's like a vestigal bat thing.

About the apple -thing: I read that wasn't originally into the script of the movie, it was an idea of Chris Sarandon: He thought that, in order to hide his true identity, a vampire should eat an apple or some other fresh fruit to "wash away" the smell of the blood after he just killed someone. Especially because most of the times he uses seduction to trick his victims... technically, he uses fruit as some sort of tooth-paste... 🙂The director liked the idea and decided to keep it into the final cut. 🙂I am not 100% sure this is true but I like to think it is! 🙂

The reason Ed survives is because Peter removed the stake. In older movies that was often part of the plot. When i watched this for the first time i actually shouted WTF at Peter when he removed the stake, so i expected Ed to show up again.

I love this movie fright night from 1985 when I was 10 years old, this movie actually gave me laughs the first time I saw it, I'm hard to scare the only movie that ever scared me a little in my childhood was the Amityville horror, this movie had a great cast including William Ragsdale AKA Charlie Brewster who I'm very proud to say is from my state, also the late Roddy McDowell, Chris sarandon was great as the next door neighbor vampire Jerry dandridge it's so cool that we generation X folks have passed movies from our generation to you new generation people

Yessss, I’m all for a Charlie the Unicorn / Vampire Mash up!!! ‘Oh god, what’s that’? ‘It’s a Liopleurodon’ ‘A magical Liopleurodon Charlie’ ‘It’s going to guide us to Candy Mountain’. Roddy McDowell played Cornelius in the 1968 version of Planet of The Apes & the sequel Escape From The Planet of The Apes. He’s later go on to play Cornelius’s son Caesar, in Conquest of The Planet of The Apes. As well as the classic Universal Horror version of Dracula from 1931, I highly recommend the Hammer Horror adaptation of Dracula; or as it’s titled in the US ‘The Horror Of Dracula’ starring Sir Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing. Charlie is actually watching the 1970 sequel ‘Scars of Dracula’. In 2007, I had the great honour of talking with Sir Christopher Lee about his career; more specifically his work with Hammer Films & the now legendary film The Wicker Man. The man was as imposing & impressive as you can imagine; I’m 6ft 2” & even in his old age, I felt tiny standing next to him.

I agree that the special effects are really quite impressive and hold up rather well. I believe that bat-like skeleton of Jerry's during the climax was a left over prop from Ghostbusters. This is a somewhat rare case as well where the sequel, Fright Night Part 2, is just as good as the original. In my opinion. It doesn't get nearly the same amount of attention as Fright Night though. But I highly recommend it. Also, I see some people have mentioned this one as well but Once Bitten is a fun vampire/comedy too.

There's a lot of different lore about vampire servants, sometimes called ghouls or other things, where they aren't vampires but they aren't fully human and usually become lesser kinds of undead, which is why Billy can take a pistol shot and melts into a puddle.

Vampires in some old folk lore can turn to bats, wolves (not a werewolf) and mist. Some go so far as large black cats and ravens or crows
