SEATS FEATURED:
Business: Collins Millenium/MiQ seats
Economy: Collins Meridian seats
I came up here with an understanding that American Airlines is one of the most hated airlines out there. Their reviews on Skytrax, the many controversies that brought themselves into many center stages in news and social media, and the testimonies from my close friends who used to be American Airlines' loyal customers were proofs that led me to this expectation. But it seems like I was way too paranoid.
I arrived from my previous flight, which was on board Japan Airlines. Thanks to the very speedy ground staff in Los Angeles plus the fact that my bag was labeled as a "Oneworld Priority" member, I finished the whole disembarking, immigration, baggage claim, and customs in less than 15 minutes, and I arrived at Terminal 4 in less than 45 minutes, and that included a toilet stop. The longest part of the whole near-45-minute journey was the TSA security check.
Soon, I reached gate 42A which was not a long walk. Since my flight was still hours away, I decided to have some rest and my lunch at the Admirals Club lounge just near the gate, located between gates 41-42. The lounge was pretty cozy with limited but delicious selections of foods and beverages, a clean facility, and friendly staff members serving the lounge. I then left the lounge 10 minutes before the boarding was scheduled to begin, and I was soon onboard the Airbus A321. This time, I didn't film the boarding (and landing) scene because their Twitter team asked me not to film the crews, although it turned out that the PR team via email said I couldn't film the airport staff members only.
This particular Airbus A321 EOW (Extended Over Water) version of American Airlines is equipped with larger A321NEO-style overhead bins, strip LED lighting, and a clean, comfortable, and dent-free interior itself. It featured 20 Collins MiQ First Class seats and 170 Collins Meridian Main Cabin seats. My seat alone, 23F, was very comfortable, cozy, and rich in features, although there were no personal TV screens at all. However, American substituted this with free Wi-Fi-based in-flight entertainment which allowed me to stream music, movies, live TV, and games, and even access any websites and social media apps I wanted while on the ground in Los Angeles, for around 20 minutes.
Take-off was relatively on time, and soon the in-flight services began with the surprisingly friendly, attentive, and caring set of cabin crews. I received a pack of biscoff biscuits and an apple juice for my dinner, and soon the cabin crew disappeared, before returning with some promotions. I surely appreciate it more if they were constantly patrolling the cabin instead of just meddling with their phones (I found this by accident), but this set of crews was already very good.
The landing was half an hour ahead of schedule, and the near-excellent experience was ruined by the incredibly slow baggage handling team at Dallas Fort Worth, causing me and other passengers to wait 45-60 minutes. However, aside from that, American Airlines did a good job and proved that what the media and many angry customers said wasn't necessarily true.
