Extremely inspiring Ezra! At 50 I left a career I thought I would do forever(long story but it wasn't an easy decision). But I didn't really have financial cushion. I have been driving Uber to feed my family (wife and 3 kids) about 50 hours/week. I have been studying via Udemy courses mostly. I am starting in internship very soon thanks to my network. It's been really tough and I am not there yet. But when I hear this story it is motivation to keep going. I'll be 52 in a couple months and I'm not stopping. Thanks Ezra and Sean!

@@ducaticanine my apologies! Not sure how I missed your question. I didn’t land work until March of this year. I made the switch to Salesforce Administration because I was seeing so many younger devs out there who were more accomplished in JavaScript who were struggling to find work. Unfortunately, I Made that switch about 3-6 months too late. It only took 3 months to get certified. But it took from Dec. 22 till March ‘24 to find work. And then it was because I knew someone. I wasn’t getting many interviews otherwise. I consider myself fortunate to have the connection I had. But, j no own am looking at earning in the 6 figure range in a contract role(so taxes and health insurance coming not of that), but the future is brighter for sure. How did thing shake out for you?

Awesome story, but how did he get into a bootcamp, isn't that also very expensive, besides meeting some criteria? I do find his application process really brilliant, I hear more often that companies (usually smaller ones) look at the why, more than the what (you did in the past). Main thing I'm taking away is that he was very lucky, but also worked hard to get that luck. Unfortunately it isn't a fixed path, even hard working people can end up not having a job.
@seanallen
2 жыл бұрын
The bootcamp he went to was Lambda (now Bloom Technology Institute). Not sure if they still do it, but back then they did ISA's (Income Share Agreement). This is where the bootcamp is free up front, but if you land a job and make a certain dollar amount they take a % of your income for a period of time to pay them back for the bootcamp. It usually ends up costing more... but the benefit is that you only pay IF you land a decent paying job.
@Pacifica.Obscura
2 жыл бұрын
Yup an ISA agreement! I was able to get out of the contract due to accommodations and my situation causing me to have to leave the bootcamp! Otherwise I think they are great alternatives to anyone needing structure and discipline. Not necessary for the education. All in all, beautifully said. “Luck is only valuable when someone of skill or knowledge is aware enough of its potential to take advantage of it” - unknown

Kudos to his and anyone’s, in similar situation, success. Not diminish the incredible achievement here but I find being homeless actually gives one extreme advantage in learning in comparison with a working parent. No getting tired from minimum wage work, no constant disruptions from the kid(s), no duties/obligations to fulfill, no endless worries about bills,… the list goes on. All you need is minimal amount of food and a wifi connection then you have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to learn continuously.

@@arcomarco7131 you probably don't have a family to feed, don't have to spend 90% of your minimum wage on rent either so your comment is very understandable. It doesn't mean you're screwed, it may take you longer. After all the fact that you are watching youtube and commenting shows you can get some spare time. P.S Maybe try no-code at the beginning? It is quicker and it may help you to go beyond minimal wage and also free you some time? Also remember that your situation gives you one advantage you can go only up, don't need to aim as high as programming at the beginning, learn something that is easier take less time and help you escape the minimal wage job.

That's a tough spot, to be honest. In general, I'm a big proponent of taking 2 steps backwards in the short term, so you can take 10 steps forward in the long term. That would be my typical advice. However... if you have a family to support and you are the only one earning... that advice may not be best. My best advice for your situation would be to keep learning to code on the side and once you feel comfortable enough start interviewing for coding jobs. Hopefully you'll find one that matches your current salary and will be able to make the switch.
