In a pioneering effort, the Sloping Agriculture Land Technology (SALT) apporach is being incorporated into the NABARD - Tribal Development Fund project in Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district of Manipur. During 2022 and 2023, 100 jhum farmers of four villages have implemented SALT along with Jhum (shifiting cultivation or slash and burn agriculture) in order to transition to a permanent mixed cropping system of crops along with Agroforestry.
Under the SALT approach, contour hedgerows of nitrogen-fixing plants will conserve soil and water while improving soil health and fertility. Farmers are encouraged to cultivate a mix of seasonal and short-term crops together with medium-term and long-term fruit crops.
Technical support for this initiative is provided by the SALT Development Committee, Aben while the project implenenting agency is People's Endeavor for Social Changes (PESCH).
We hope that this project serves as a model for upscaling SALT under NABARD-TDF projects in Northeast India.
