I grew up on a farm. You can raise cattle on land that cannot be used for anything else. Our good freinds had cattle grazing in the foothills (small mountains) that would have been impossible to plant on. Typically cows are fed alphalpha, which repairs soil and feeds pollinators, like bees. Cow manure goes back into the soil. Yoy can include cattle in your crop rotation. Naturally raised beef will always be better for the planet than lab grown, which requires, artificially sourced chemicals, electricity, toxic waste management, etc. You need to think about the whole cycle.

Isn't the issue with cattle is the fact that in poor 3rd world countries, people are illegally cutting down forests to make land for cattle? Also, those lands, due to being legally forest land and illegally settled by Cattle Ranchers, just get abandoned after they start getting desertified (I.e, the soil has poor quality and no more top soil so it can not retain water and thus turns into a desert). Another issue with cattle is water consumption in dry areas like California and gas costs of transport and the impact of that on the environment. Not the land. There's also the fact that Cattle are indiscriminate grazers and their hooves actually compact the soil beneath them which makes it harder for native plants to grow back and causes erosion. Most cows are also raised in CAFOs where they are fed Soy and Corn which are monoculture crops and require heavy pesticide use, and Soy and Corn diets increase the amount of Methane they produce.
@swishfish4289
9 ай бұрын
I do agree with you about Naturally Raised Beef likely being better for the environment than Lab-Grown due to the fact that so much will need to be imported for the process, and we aren't even sure about what the long term consequences of consuming it will be, it might become the next asbestos or tobacco. The problem is people eat too much Beef and the demand is too high. If you follow the rules regarding 'Naturally Raised Cattle' where their impact on the environment is lessened, the stats are 2 cows per acre and that's just not feasible with the current demands for beef.

@eragon78
Жыл бұрын
The issue with processed foods isnt the actual act of processing the food. Cooking is a process for example, doesnt mean its bad. The issue with processed foods is they often contain higher concentrations of low-nutrient but tasty substances which give you empty calories which lead to weight gain. A highly processed food liekly contains a lot of salt, oils, fat, and/or sugar. That is because these things make food taste delicious. However, it means you end up consuming FAR more than you actually need of these substances, and they also tend to have a lot of calories. This makes them unhealthy. But this is just a rule of thumb. Not EVERY process concentrates the oversaturated unhealthy ingredients. and not EVERY process strips nutrients out of the product. In fact, some stuff like really healthy meal replacement shakes contain tons of nutrients and are low in calories and are super healthy for you, but they are heavily processed. Just an example of something that can be processed but still healthy. Its just that if you generally follow that rule, youll be far more likely to eat healthier foods than unhealthy foods. Its difficult to list the exceptions to people without teaching them everything there is to know about nutrition. Its far more easy to just give them a basic rule of thumb that will generally be correct rather than explain in detail how you can tell if something is healthy or unhealthy. So something being artificial doesnt mean its unhealthy at all. It depends on the makeup of the nutrients inside it.

I'm a journalist for the food industry and have visited some of these companies producing cultured meat. People think cell-based will take farmer's jobs, but actually we will still need these farmers within the new cell-cultured industry. A CEO told me "we want to work with them and there is room for them." We've been scarred as a society by synthetic additives like artificial carcinogenic colors, which are a real threat. This is different. Lab grown meat sounds scary, but it's cleaner than farm meat. My parents recently sampled some in Singapore in the form of chicken skewers. The meat was bland and dry, but that was more on the chefs and their preparation method haha. No antibiotics are used and the footprint is significantly cut down. Consumer mindets need to change and that will take time. But from a health perspective, it's much safer. Before judging something on the surface we must look deeper and do our own research, especially before scaring others and turning them off to a potentially great thing that scientists have worked hard to perfect and make safe. But it's good to question things. Also, don't worry about the GMO aspect of it. You aren't working with gene editing, but rather allowing cells to go through their natural processes in a controlled clean environment. Already now, I see more effort is being placed on transparency to ensure consumers get access to key information about the supply chain as we enter a new renaissance in food😊

Like I said, less water waste, a lot of land could be used for other stuff, etc. The industry keeps trying to produce more and more infinitely and seeks more and more profit. Funny thing: the same issue is there for exotic vegetables like almonds and avocados that are necessary for a vegitable-based diet. Water and excessive use of nutrients deplete the lifeforce of land that they are cultivated in much the same way. Not to mention, beef uses lands that are otherwise unusable for agriculture. And the methane gas that they emit? Yes, they are bad, but nowhere near as bas as the other metric that we release as a civilization in cars, airplanes, and other infrastructures that enable our daily diet in terms of sheer logistics. I am not saying that beef is healthy for the environment. Heck, I am not saying that humanity needs to be culled. I am saying that we need to stop dividing people based on food like good sheeps we are from all these media hype and start to look at actually effective ways to change our lifestyle.
@archietiberius5005

It's a reference to the incredibly high water and feed cost to produce a pound of beef, versus other types of farm-raised protein. Cows also, ironically, do produce incredibly high amounts of methane as a result of their digestion process. While a cow by itself is not a big deal, when you factor in the commercialization and industrialization of the cattle industry, the amount of methane produced is honestly pretty fuckin' insane.

Vote with your dollar. Find a local butcher who sells grass fed beef or grass fed beef farm/ranch that will sell you a whole cow and a butcher who will process it. Buy your meat from them. If you go with the whole cow route get a group of people together to buy it together. If the market for grass fed increases enough more farms will switch to grass fed which means more on the market which means it’ll be cheaper and you can go back to just buying it at the grocery store. Or keep supporting your local butcher whom I’m sure if you’re a decent person will haves formed a relationship with you and will give you freebies or give you scraps/house made dog treats for your puppers

@@TheSpinnyFish You make it seem like protein cells grow and multiply by themselves without any catalyst! In the case of cultivating meat/cells, the process undergoes different stages; cell collection, cell development, cell proliferation and cell variation/differentiation. Much so like the pharmaceutical industry does when they trial new drugs on in vitro cells. Do you think these happen without external catalysts or substances added to regulate the process? Also, during synthesis, cells naturally produce microbes and chemicals that can be harmful. What do they do/add to prevent such deviations? Furthermore, in the case of the US, the FDA only oversees the initial stages of cell cultivation only, therefore I wouldn't trust manufacturers with what's left of the production. Not that I fully trust the FDA at that, I mean we've been around many scandals coming out of the FDA! So yeah buddy, it's not simple automatic protein replication isolated from contaminants or additives. Best you follow your own advice and read more about the process.

I'm just going to point out that we are a part of the animal kingdom and pretty sure we are not top of the food chain. One other point is that plants are alive and breathing as well. They bleed as well, so maybe we should stop eating them as they also produce oxygen for us to breathe. You don't see me attacking my gardeners and landscapers for doing their jobs. Nothing about it is plastic, if this technology get developed furthur then the only different between it and real meat is we grow it from a cell instead of butchering it from a cow. I'm a journalist for the food industry and have visited some of these companies producing cultured meat. We've been scarred as a society by synthetic additives like artificial carcinogenic colors, which are a real threat. This is different. Lab grown meat sounds scary, but it's cleaner than farm meat. My parents recently sampled some in Singapore in the form of chicken skewers. The meat was bland and dry, but that was more on the chefs and their preparation method haha. No antibiotics or hormones are used and the footprint is significantly cut down.

It's still beef but without the killing and in the end, way, way cheaper! In most parts of the world there's famin, Also in 'murica. Think of the possibilities worldwide.
