In this episode of our brand-new series, Jesus in Galilee Pt 1: From Nazareth to Capernaum, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray begins unpacking why Jesus spent 90% of his time ministering around the Sea of Galilee. Why not in Jerusalem? Surely that would have been the place for Jesus to make the biggest impact. Right?
It turns out, the land of Israel was a major water bridge, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and land bridge connecting Egypt, to other major empires. But despite being the religious center of Judea, Jerusalem was secluded. It wasn’t on a major road. It sat up in the hills. Galilee, on the other hand, sat at the intersection between the International Coastal highway and the Transjordanian highway, making it one of the most highly trafficked areas in the entire world.
So, after John the Baptist was arrested, Matthew’s Gospel says Jesus “withdrew” to Galilee. But as we’ll see, Jesus wasn’t withdrawing. He was advancing. By picking up where John left off, Jesus took the message of the kingdom straight into the heart of the crossroads of the world. By the end of Jesus in Galilee Pt 1: From Nazareth to Capernaum you’ll see the strategic brilliance of Jesus’s decision to proclaim his message where it would have the greatest impact.
