Bob, thanks again for coming to check out my progress here at the property! I've got lots of plans to really dial in my place this year after winter passes. I've cleared additional land to install a dozen more raised garden beds, identified key areas to plant fruit trees, and will be restoring native grasses at my place. If all goes well, I'll be canning food by the end of summer. I absolutely love it out here.

I would try rabbits more than chickens. Chicken food is expensive nowadays, especially if you’re growing meat bird who are bred to convert purchased food mainly. Rabbits are way easier to process and grow faster than chickens. I would skip goats. Kill deer or antelope instead. Tastier and easier. I’ve done it all and you know what they say free advice is worth😂.

I think I saw his video that had the results of the rain. Some constructive criticism: according to some wetland restorers, the most efficient check dams are one rock dams. You make them one rock high, but make more of them. The idea is two-fold: for the same work, you get more dams, and the water has less distance to get up speed. Sediment carrying capacity increases with the square of the flow speed. So you really reduce the ability of water to carry sediment away. The other thing is that if a dam gives way, there’s less built up energy behind it, reducing the risk of a big blowout.

I believe that is a pithouse foundation from the basket maker period. Lithic flakes and absence of pottery sherds. They used to use rock gardens like those for their gardens the large rocks shelter the earth from the sun and retains more water. You should seek out those areas and plant melons, beans, squash and sunflowers. Also enjoy the piñon. I’m jealous, keep up the good work.

You use 90% less water 💧 doing aquaponics you can grow fish 🐟 with fruits and vegetables inside the Walipini greenhouse and it will stay warm all year you can even grow fruit trees inside of it like bananas ,dragon fruit etc and you can look into harvesting your own rain 🌧 water also ,add a bigger solar farm buy used way cheaper solar panels from SanTan Solar I do ,just some ideas 💡 😉

That little arrow head is actually a small scraper used for cleaning sinew from small game, legs and fur, scraping meat from tendons on rabbits and birds etc,.. It has one sharp edge on the interior curve and is held between the thumb and index finger and drawn back against whatever it is you want to clean. Cool place, if you get chickens, you'll need dogs to protect them from coyotes or a very robust chicken coup.

Check the geology there very closely and continue to study it, look for unusual mineral deposits that you can utilize. Looks like you already have a ton of clay, make a small wood fired kiln from some old bricks and a Korean or primitive kick wheel to throw your own pottery and fire it. There's a reason primitive man made a lot of pottery; it is super useful for stoves, water catchment, food storage and on and on. You can also make a living selling it.

Brian appears to be learning fast. There is an element to this property, however, that makes it much less desirable for the long term that he was not aware of. Most areas of juniper do not spread forest fire well because the trees dry the soil around them to prevent brush growth. This property looks different. There is a lot of brush that will eventually transmit the fire well enough to burn the entire place. He can thin his entire 14 acres, but that state land is going to overwhelm it with heat and fire. This is an example of the benefit of asking an ecologist or forester to evaluate the land before purchase. Most of the other challenges are less lethal and can be addressed in time. By the way, that darker rock looks like a flow of andesite. It is very likely carrying shallow ground water from those mountains/ridges. They didn't mention a well, but that is the place to start. Part of my living is made evaluating land for homesteads etc. It pays to get it right so you have time to learn the rest. Knowing enough about soils is also a critical area to get right before you start learning. This site is dominated by heavy silt and clay. Lighter soils are best, especially for dry land farming. Enjoy your land search. it is a fascinating endeavor when you do find the right land!

I commend you for your vision of restorative permaculture and returning the bottom land to wetland. I have concern that citrus would not survive the Winter months unless you somehow provide a heater for each tree. Everything else should be great as it has the chill hours for apples and stone fruit.
