Clear, sharp, precise so you don’t have to get lost looking for the right sound, the right articulation and so on. All this comes after but the most important and not to stay on a blank page. @@thierryd.8717 Indeed! It's still a work in progress, and I never seem to be quite satisfied with it. When I did the Divisimate tutorials I used 100% Project Colossal, but I'm tweaking it more and more to my liking these days, so have changed all the reverb settings and master chains - what is left now is a lot of the eq's for close and room mic, but that's about it.

Hello, great video! Do you use a sustain pedal when recording with VST instuments?
@RunarLundvall
7 ай бұрын
Thank you! For piano and similar instruments, I do. For some string/wind instruments, using the sustain pedal sometimes controls rebowing/retongue techniques which can increase realism quite a bit. I also know that people use it to play more freely when using legato-patches, so they can move their fingers around while the sound is played, but I have not incorporated that technique into my own style.

I appreciate the content a lot. This was intensive. I fully agree that this type of sketching is a game changer. You can't even imagine how helpful it was, it is definitely what I needed. Really liked how you delivered orchestral cliches such as descending lines, stabs, runs, it was the first time when I used them(cliches) although I know about this "techniques". I stopped almost on 24 minutes, because my piece of music suddenly feels like it is finished in bar 4, before the stab hits bar 5, it makes no sense, so I need to deal with this unplanned cadence(. Also electricity will be off soon due to Russian missiles. But as soon as the electricity back I continue with this sketching. It's a very new experience, and I like it, your approach is excellent, and it was great that you chose an adventure genre that allows to use many techniques. The hardest part of the sketching was trying to figure out how to make interesting rhythm without a mess in outcome. What I would like to hear and see in the next episodes? Maybe something about how to not get lost in the arrangement; I feel overwhelmed when so much happening and you should balance between repetition and new ideas. Sorry if it was hard to understand what I said, or I made mistakes, it is because I am not a great English speaker). Looking forward to the next episodes. P.S. It might be a good idea to create a discord channel for the community where we can discuss, ask, and share our musical journey in the future.

Hello man, and thank you very much for such a long and heartfelt answer. I'm really glad it made so much sense to you and that you found it useful! It's heartbreaking to hear you talking about russian missiles and lack of electricity. I really hope that you can stay safe and have the possibility for heat and light and food and everything else that you need. Absolutely, these sketches are overwhelming, and we are cramming so much information into the sketch, so it really takes some time to get used to it. But your advice is very good, and I will try to make it even easier in the upcoming episodes. I think your advice about making a Discord is a GREAT idea, and will do this immediately!

Hello Runar- this session was an eye-opening moment for me. As a self-taught- I always struggled when I sat to write and my themes never moved after the basic theme line and I could not figure out why and how to move from there. I realised what I was missing when I went through your process. It taught me how sketching should be done before diving into actual instruments to orchestrate. It helped first arrive at the length and breadth of the piece pretty much to the last detail before getting carried away with orchestration. Thanks a lot. Glad YT showed me this in the feeds.

@@RunarLundvall exactly! I saw one of your earlier piano sketch videos and was intrigued, and I was curious what decisions flow into making one of these. And this is exactly what this new series is, a follow-along for each decision that goes into making an orchestral piece (or sketch). Really useful for people (like me) who don't go to music college. Im not sure it was intended that way, but I didn't copy the steps exactly and used them as a kind of outline in my DAW (This was by accident at first because I overheard that I should copy the notes) and it worked out pretty nicely.

The naming system is just for the piano part where you sketch out. This is because many of these instruments are in the same range, on the piano. You should use individual tracks for each instrument when you move to the orchestration part using your samples. Then you can look at the piano-sketch to remember what instruments are playable in that range where that specific midi sits. It's just a way to be more mindful about orchestration _while_ you compose. Hope that helps!

For example, I'm currently working on an RPG travel piece (think Skyrim type thing) so I know my harmony would be extended chords and less short rhythmic ones that are featured in Adventure style here, etc. stuff like that, that could be covered. @@RunarLundvall Hi Runar, I'm hoping you have a very nice holiday with lots of fine music!! Just wanted to say thanks again for this fantastic course of yours! And maybe give some kind of feedback or more correctly just some loose thoughts of mine about it really. I've been through the video now and made my piano sketch, hurrah! So fun to have worked through a composition of yours and see how everything fits together.And also having it available in my DAW! Setting up several piano tracks like that really makes sense. Anyway, I really loved the video, a lot of information. I'm a bit slow with my DAW (I'm using Cakewalk) so had to take it in several parts, but really awesome to get this insight into how you work. And will definitely try to adapt things I've learned in my own writing (which is far less methodical, and more of "a splash of sounds", haha, at least on my sketch level). I did wonder a bit about why you chose to group certain instruments together though, but could it have something to do with how high/low they are in the register? I did sometimes fumble a bit to find out which track we were recording in, but I paused often and it all went well. I guess also that you have pretty clear ideas about which instrument is to play what already when you are making the piano sketch, for instance that the thrills will be played by the piccolo, and when you record a theme you pretty much now which instrument will play it in the orchestral version. That makes perfect sense of course, and is very much the privilege of the composer. Great composition as well, with lots of things going on! I loved the idea of the rhytmic engine (never done that myself), and the way you built the harmonies and melodies. I don't know too much music theory myself, but it seems to me you do a lot of things "right" intuively. A lot of variations, and interesting things going on. Really looking foward to the next one. Will have even more beverage ready for that one! Haha. PS: By the way; If you are still interested in the Originals- Intimate strings from Spitfire, then as you may know, they have a winter sale now so it's 40% off everything, including the orgiginals series, so only 17euros. Pretty decent price, but no pressure man, I know there's soo many good VSTs out there, can't have them all... :-) All the best!

@@voltimande Hey man! First of all, thanks for sending me such a nice message and providing so much valuable feedback. Hope you have a great christmas too, and get time to really dig into music! About the grouping of instruments: (many more have asked about this) When you compose using the pianosketch, youo don't have to think about instruments in the beginning. Just pay attention to where on the piano your hands ends up. Using this information, it's easy to put the notes in the appropriate tracks, at least if you know what the instrument ranges are for these groups. Then later, when you orchestrate the sketch, you can take some artistic choices about which instrument within the group you woul like to put the voicing on. If it does not work, its very easy to swap them out and change them into any other instrument that also sounds good in the same range. In my new community Discord, I have shared some wallpapers from VSL which outline all the ranges for all the instruments - check them out :) Thanks for the heads up on those Spitfire strings! I have not forgotten about them, and it seems like now would be a good time to invest! Chat soon man, and happy composing :D
