Did you know that Fatburger started in South Los Angeles? Fatburger, originally Mr. Fatburger, started in the late 1940s as home-style hamburger stand on the corner of Western Avenue and 31st Street---and a joint venture between Black entrepreneurs Lovie Yancey and Charles "Suitcase" Simpson. In only a few short years, that stand would turn into a 24-hour operations, attracting celebrities across Los Angeles.
So what's the story behind its South LA history? And what happened to the very first Fatburger that started it all in South Los Angeles? Yancey's story proves to be a windy, incredible tale that encapsulates Black entrepreneurship in South LA.
