I have made so many liquid culture jars in the past 5 years that I have observed the growth habits of dozens of mushrooms. Lion's mane is the only species I have observed that will tinge the liquid culture media a dark amber color, which I believe is due to metabolites being secreted by the mycelium in response to running out of nutrients. This also seems to stall the mycelium growth without even growing very much. I use 1 TBS of honey to 600 ml of water for all mushroom species and never have this issue with other species.
In this experiment, I extract the used liquid from a stalled jar of lion's mane liquid culture and replace it with fresh sterilized honey water to see if the mycelium is kickstarted into growing again. This experiment succeeded and the stalled mycelium started to grow again right away! This result intrigued me and will help us understand the growth habits of Lions' mane.
I will try to use 2 TBS of honey to 600 ml of water for Lion's mane to see if the mycelium is sustained longer.
