Gilly fan here, but he did miss a few one-day matches, albeit not due to injuries or slump in form. He was rested a couple times to play Haddin in the Tri-series involving South Africa and Sri Lanka in 2006. He also took a break for the birth of his child in the Chapell-Hadlee series before the 2007 world cup. But yeah, he did play 96 test matches without a break. Unbelievable, if you consider the fact that he was Keeper and also the opening batsman in the limited overs

One of the coolest and calmest cricketer ever. He was a great captain too. Ponting couldn't win a test match in India when he captained the side but Gilchrist won a test in India while captaining the side.

His potential of turning game around in just one session is remarkable. No 7 batsmen in tests and still most effective and best Aussie ever. I don’t think world would witness any player like him again.

The Australian test team from 99-06 was obviously stacked with amazing talent from top to bottom, but Gilchrist was as influential on their success as anybody IMO. As you say, he could change the shape of a test in merely a couple of hours. Having a No.7 who averages close to 50, at one of the best strike rates in test cricket, is a weapon few (if any!) teams will ever have the luxury of enjoying.

Probably the only WK who could be picked solely for their keeping or batting alone. He was that damned good in both roles that it's not funny, sure there were better pure Keepers than him and there were better batsmen who also kept wicket than him, but none were good enough to be picked for either role by itself. Greatest Keeper-batsman of all time by far.

Clarke was on 79 when Gilly came in to bat, ended up with 135. Clarke was outscored by Gilly 102 vs 56. When Clarke got to 100, Gilly was on 11. From here on, Clarke was outscored by Gilly 91 to 35. Such explosive batting!!!

Gilchrist was not only a great batsman wicketkeeper but also a very humble person. In any world eleven anywhere, anytime, he would be an automatic choice. Australia was very fortunate to have such a talent in an already star-filled team. He is also a great commentator today and richly deserves his place in history.

Sometimes you have to stop, take a breath and just reminisce at how good this bloke was. Test debut in 1999 got 80 odd not out on debut, second test made 149 not out with arguably the greatest match saving partnership with Justin Langer against Pakistan with a bowling attack consisting of Wasim Akram, waqar younis, Shoaib ahktar and saqlain Mushtaq . He then never missed a test match from the day he was selected to the day he retired, to average 47 with 17 hundreds coming in at number 7 is absolutely ridiculous. Greatest wicket keeper batsman anyone alive today will ever see, and an even better bloke.
