Answer to your question. I have tried various methods for you. 1. Don't use hot glue because it is to bulky . 2. Don't use any kind of sticky tape as there is no way of knowing how long the sticky will last and you don't want disappointed customers. You won't get any repeat custom if it becomes detached. 3. Don't use super glue as it saturates the back of the design and leaks through to the resin dome. Then due to a chemical reaction it starts to eat or rot its way through the dome. The only thing I found that works is apoxy resin. I used araldite. It worked every time. Really enjoyed watching your upload and then taking up the challenge of finding the best adhesive for your project. Well done and keep up the good work of inspiring our community of crafters.

I’m no expert in crafting, I just share projects that I am doing and I often learn by my mistakes! And I love it when people go off and find easier or better ways to do something. And I especially love it when those people, like you, share what they’ve learned. Your time is much appreciated! It’s really interesting what you have highlighted here about using Super Glue too. After gluing all the cardboard pieces together I would use a nail file to sand the edges and that would get rid of the "stacked" look and make it look like 1 piece. Also, I would use glossy accents or maybe pva glue between the resin sticker and printed design to get rid of any bubbles and as for sticking the design to the paperboard I'd use e6000 and keep it on your rolling pin with a rubber band for a few days and it should be perfectly stuck! Great idea!! ❤❤

I like the idea but I think up-cycling means more like saving resources and using what would get thrown away. So to me the title was a bit misleading if you need to buy ten or more different things to make a pendant out of trash. But it looks nice.
@RainbowLane
5 жыл бұрын
The trash part of my title Trash to Flash refers to the main body of the piece which is made from cardboard I would have thrown away. The fact that other items are used does not detract from the fact that I did not have to go and buy cardboard as well. The cardboard in this project is recycled because it was used again after its original purpose had ended. It’s all about semantics at the end of the day and I respect your point of view. I also thank you for watching and taking time to comment. 😊

I often find double-sided tape doesn't like to stick to paint. However, it does like to stick to Sharpie ink. So you can use that for the front edges and outside. Then add your tape (2 layers). I also have used Art Glitter glue that dries clear and is a very strong glue. I also use small clothes pins or little clamps to hold the whole thing together until the glue dries (doesn't take long). I hope this is helpful.

I think this came out really well, and I liked the candle idea to make the channel! If you prefer to stick (haha) with double sided tape then do like you did the second time, but simply trim around the edges with a scapel BEFORE you apply the design, so they are completely hidden under it. I'd also do like to suggest (like some other commeters) that using much wider tape (like carpet tape) would allow you to cut a circle to fit, then supporting this overnight on the mould and holding with strong elastic bands would help to ease the resin dome into its new shape.

Very nice video. I like the recycle part. To finish you piece after you glue the three pieces together, mold them around you dowel then wait to dry. after they dry to clean up your piece sand the edges so instead of seeing three layers they will be flat edges.and clean for your paint. As for the dome do as others have said and use E600 or other strong glue then remold around the dowel with bands for a day or so to dry. then to add strength use a sealant to coat the pendent. You may also want to use less of a curve. Altogether it was wonderful and everyone will have their own take on the project!

Many thanks for your input Debra - yes, sanding the edges is essential to get rid of the layered look. This is such a beautiful piece and I would ware it. I would have used hot glue with the mini glue gun and clear mini glue sticks. It might also work with jewelry glue E-6000 holding it together till it felt stuck on the base. I learned to use my glue guns by practicing on cardboard cereal boxes kinda like practicing sewing stitches on scrap fabric. I just kept practicing thin lines of glue and than using a spoon to smooth it flat. After you get this down I know it should work on gluing these together. Thank you for sharing your beautiful piece with us. Craft On!!

THEN put them together as a last step... did i clearly say that? Beautiful piece and idea.

First, thanks for watching and taking time to give such a helpful comment. Yes, I think that could be a good solution. My only concern is that the 'springiness' of the self-adhesive dome that goes onto the design cannot be pre-shaped and moulded the way I did with the cardboard. It is what it is (if that makes sense!) So if I am understanding you correctly, what you are saying is that the dome could be moulded against a curve just like the cardboard base? Whatever you do with those domes, they are always trying to get back to being flat and the only thing that seems to work is when I make the bases with less of a curve and use super strong adhesive. Let me know if you try what you have suggested and once again, thanks so much for you input - it is much appreciated.

Thanks for the video!! Have you tried E6000 glue for sticking the resin on? It's strong stuff and dries pretty fast. As for the resin, I'm not very experienced with resin so I have a couple questions. #1...does heat make resin more 'bendy'? If so, could you heat it up (like with a heat gun) and make it more 'bendy' before you glue it onto the hardened backing you made (from the cereal box)? #2 IF heating resin makes it bendy, does it keep that shape once it cools?
@RainbowLane

Hi Terri - thanks for watching and commenting. I haven't tried E6000 yet but as so many people have suggested it, I do have it on my list of stuff to get. I still haven't researched yet to see if I can get it in the UK. And to answer your question about resin, I would have to try it to find out as I don't know about heating it up. But in theory, you idea does sound logical. I have only ever used the resin domes, I have never used liquid resin so I don't know anything about it at all. When I get the chance, I will experiment with your idea and let you know the outcome. And if anyone else out there knows the anser to Terri's questions, please share it with us. Thanks again.

This was my thought too. That tape was never going to stick well to a glossy surface. I would suggest that even the glue would be too slick for that curve. Roughing up the surface you are going to tape too would help a lot. Just hitting it with an emory board or a piece of sandpaper should give you enough texture that the tape can grip. Nice demo!

I don't consider that recycled. The only thing that was recycled was the cardboard. Everything else was purchased, and some of it quite expensive.

Thank you for your thoughts DA. This is what I say in the video description - "In this weeks video I teach you how to recycle carboard IN your crafts to make something to be proud of. Empty creal boxes make very valuable craft materials and I show you how to condition the cardboard to make it strong. If using upcycled paper or card IN your crafts is your thing, you will love this creative craft project. If you are unsure of where to get the REST OF THE CRAFT SUPPLIES shown in the video,........." etc. - I am not claiming that this pendant is completely recycled, I am simply encouraging people to consider upcycling cereal box card as the main material in a project to avoid buying new card. I do apologise if that wasn't clear. Many of my viewers have craft stashes that would include things I use in my videos and if a person does not have those things to hand, it is their personal choice whether to go and buy them to try the project. Thanks again for your comment. 😍

No need to change your methods or supplies. Rainbow Lane, to prevent the edges from becoming unstuck after applying the two-sided tape to the cereal box form, use your heat gun or hair dryer to help soften the entire piece. Heat it gently and maybe wrap rubber bands to ensure contact with the two surfaces. The heat, theoretically, should soften the mandala so initial contact remains in the curvature you desire. -ttocS

Where do you get the mandala sticker? Is it just a sticker or something else therefore you can use any stickers? Where do you get the resin domes?
@RainbowLane

I forgot to answer your question about resin domes - I used to get mine from Amazon UK but not sure if anyone is still doing them. I don’t know which country you are in but I just checked on Amazon . com and found some there. BUT they are almost £15 for 50 now. Thats a huge price jump from when I last bought them! You don’t need to use them, you could use Dimensional Magic. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a liquid sealer that forms a thick coat and won’t drip over the edges if you apply it properly. Not sure how it would perform with a curved pendant though - would be very tricky. 😍

What about Mandala question. Lol sorry. 🙏

Hi Valerie, the mandala was from a coloring book, colored in by someone I know. There is more info about it in the blog post that I wrote when I did the KZitem video - if you go back to the video and find the link to my website on the end screen, you can find out more about the book and who published it. It wasn’t a sticker and yes, you could use any sticker or design that fits.

Thanks for sharing your great idea, but like other ladies have said, using e6000 glue should do a lot better, but you shouldn't paint the side the photo goes on at all, also use close pins, but not ones that clamp down to hard, because they will leave unsightly marks, the idea of putting on elastics is a great idea, i'd use 2 of those. or maybe use heated glue.

In my opinion, I can think of so many short cuts to arrive at the same results. I like the creative idea but I like to make things easier because I don't like unnessary hassles. When I try it in the future I will be happy to share it.

🤣😍😂Sounds like something I would do! I once stripped wallpaper off a wall that was going to be demolished the following day to make two small rooms into one big one! My husband just let me do it, with a huge grin on his face each time he walked by. That wasn't OCD - that was just plain stupidity in action!🙄

Why does it have to be curved? You can use most adhesives if it were flat plus you could see more of the design.
@RainbowLane

+Kathleen Hunter Thanks for your comment Kathleen, I did do a round one to start with but the curved one looked more elegant - BUT of course, it's all down to individual choice. And you are right, a flat one would be fine with practically any adhesives. I really appreciate your input - thank you.😀

Kathleen Hunter I think this curves one is really classy. I also know it would be beautiful flat as well. I also think putting just a slight curve to this piece would look really beautiful as well.

Thanks for that, I do prefer a curve to flat because flat doesn't look that great in cardboard. But you are right - the first ones I did way back were much less curved and they were fine. Your visit and input is much appreciated.

As my research hasn’t helped you, the only thing left is for you to do your own research to see where you can buy 2 inch resin domes wherever you live. As I said, I got mine on Amazon but when I checked them in my shop it says unavailable. Good luck.

Double sided tape is now weather proof ~ this wouldn’t last if it got wet in rain
@RainbowLane
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa - I am assuming you meant to say 'not' waterproof? And if so, yes you are right - however, the resin dome is waterproof and so is the back of the pendant (unless you dunk it in water and leave it there) if you use a good glaze. So the doublesided tape is not accessible to rain as it is hidden under the resin dome. BUT - I wouldnt use double sided tape again anyway as it clearly didn't work that well. I have since used a couple of suggestions that viewers made here and found the the hot glue gun really worked well. Also, lots of people have suggested E6000 which seems to be very popular in the US. And regarding the rain issue - although most of the jewellery and craft items we make from paper and card is splash-proof, people need to be mindful of the materials used and not let them getting soaking wet. I have cardboard crafts that I made 10 years ago using double-sided tape and it's still going strong. So it's a question of being sensible about what you expose you masterpieces to! Thanks for your input - it is much appreciated.
