Tim, You have two aids in finding lift, the variometer instrument on the right of the panel. If the needle is above 0 you are in lift, below 0 in sink. You also have the audio variometer, the more it squeaks the more lift, a deeper constant tone is sink. Use the brakes sparingly, they can be your friend. Once you have flown it a few times you will enjoy yourself. Bob

As another ex real world glider pilot and PPL I have to say that taking part in online tasks in Condor 2 with the UK Virtual Soaring Club in VR and using Discord has been my best experience in many years of flight simming (DCS was pretty good too but I have not played that since February 2022).

Nice to see people are enjoying flying with the VSC crew so much! :) As a note pretty sure if you buy Condor 2 now you will get a free upgrade to Condor 3 when it is released. I am not sure how well VR is supported in either, I think it can be fun getting things up and running in V2 however there are many who have and we all like to share our knowledge in VSC.

I did a couple of years gliding. Really enjoyable. Nice wide circuit, and careful use of air brakes. And depending on conditions, aim for 55 knots on approach. More if windy - really noticeable how wind speed reduces nearer the ground.

I learned to fly in gliders back in the day when I was a poor student. It’s really strange seeing a flying legend unsure what’s going on around things that are so familiar to glider pilots, like ridge soaring. I kind of wish I still had my instructor rating because I’d have been happy to take you up and show you.

@localbod

It's either, as you suggested, that R2D2 is in the back and, being a bit of a lad, he's been on the lash and got pissed. Or it's the audio indication of the variometer, which gives vertical speed. I hope it's the former.

So, ridge lift, my understanding (at least as an armchair expert) is you want to be fairly close, but offset slightly to one side of the ridge, not right over the top. On the upwind side you should find lift, and on the downwind side/lee side you'll find a lot of sink, as all that air pushed up over the ridge drops back down and tries to take you with it. I think, when you were trying to get ridge lift, the fact you're vario was sounding fairly neutral, only slight sink, suggests you weren't close enough to feel it's effects, or the wind was running parallel to the ridge.

Being a fan of most things that come from the U.K., specifically the deprecating humor, I immediately connected. Luke Black P.S. - Sounds like you have a favorable impression of the Pimax Crystal Light. Would love to hear your take on the Somnium VR1 headset if you get a chance. Nice landing, but fast. So you over-ran into the crop field beyond the grass field. But it was safe. When ridge flying, DO NOT be on top of the ridge. There's no lift there. The lift is on the windward side, so you should have been well out to the left, feeling for the lift sweet spot. On the downwind side of the ridge is severe sink and turbulence (in strong winds). Don't ever go there! I suspect the sim wind was very light or you'd have been an upside-down VTOL on the downwind side of that ridge. Nice flight, though. Love the way you call the sailplane a 'Jet'. I was a glider pilot before I got my PPL. But I used to soar the Chipmunk in cloud lift - it was a big supplement to the meagre 145hp Gipsy Major engine on cross countries! Vince

You need to work on your towing position. Gear and wing struts for an X and the elevator should be at the middle of this X. During the complete tow! Your landing was OK for a fighter pilot, not so good for a soaring guy 😉 And aerobatics ONLY withe empty wingtanks (waterballast)

I have a G2 and a Quest 3. I think the Crystal light will be my next VR headset to replace the G2 for flight sims. I've tried everything to get the Quest 3 to look as good as the G2, but to get it to look as good I get 20 FPS lower and it crashes.

@@supermilo Sorry, I'm mostly talking about DCS. The Q3 is amazing on everything else. I can get the Q3 running and it looks pretty good, but I can not get the quality the same. I have a 4080 and my G2 is at 1.5 SS and everything maxed on DCS. I use DLAA instead of MSAA though. If I try that with the Q3 and link cable it crashes a few seconds after getting in a aircraft. I have to lower settings just to get it to run at the same FPS. In the G2 I can see ground targets at 20k feet.

@@supermilo Well I got the Q3 to work good, but it only works good with Virtual Desktop and not he link cable for some reason. Link cable is a stuttering mess.
