One thing I like about your videos is the variety of sources you always regard in addition to the movie (or game, ...) which is the main focus of your respective video. Also, speaking of cannibalism, how about a video about The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover? Or anything by Greenaway?

Perfect video. I didn't had this interpretation of the movie before. But it's absolutely the message behind it. We became so worried about the risks that the world offers, that we forget about the danger that we can cause ourselves.

I came across this channel quite a long time ago from the House of Leaves video essay, and immediately subscribed from that video alone. And despite that, KZitem has literally not recommend a single video on this channel to me for the entire year I've been subscribed. I only just rediscovered this channel because I was going through my list of subscribed channels to cull the ones I don't watch anymore. This channel is great and I hope most people who discover it don't end up in the same situation I did.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH this is facinating!!!!!!!!!! I've always been rather entranced by NBC Hannibal's use of cannibalism, and in that show Hannibal's elegance always keeps the watcher one step removed from the violence of the act. This examination of Raw, especially your point about Raw very specifically not being beautiful, made me think about that almost protective layer in NBC Hannibal, and it's given me some new insight in how to stretch and push the cannibalism metaphor in my own writing. Also kudos for the Rilke!

@UltimateKyuubiFox

To me, its treatment in Hannibal shows the true sociopathy of the character in that he is able to view human meat and prepare it the way we do nonhuman meat. In his attempt to take viscera and turn it into art, the show itself is almost commenting on the nature of food. The way the viewer will suddenly recoil upon learning the delicious dish is HUMAN meat is almost the perfect interrogation about why we find it so easy to view meat as anything other than repulsive to begin with. And the answer is, because we can put a nice coat of art on top of it. We are similar to Hannibal in our consumption. He merely views fellow humans as equivalent to the cattle we opt to slaughter instead. If disgusting viscera is beautiful when properly placed, and it can be made to taste good, the cannibalism almost starts to feel like the least terrible thing about Hannibal Lecter. And that sense of familiarity is half of the show’s strength. Because it so closely mirrors Will Graham’s own seduction into Hannibal’s mindset.

This is a wonderful video, all your video essays are amazing. As I've said before you give every frame a painting a run for his money. By that I don't mean that it's one or the other, I love you both. This video perfectly illustrates why I stopped eating meat. it was that exact dilemma of I am, meat. That led me to the decision to not consume meat. I think it's really weird to me how people don't think about this deeply because it is a very covertly existential concept. Maybe this makes me an animist but I do believe that everything that is living is as conscious as I am. for me eating it is saying that my existence is more important than theirs and I don't care either way if anyone else eats meat. It's just a personal decision and I don't think of anyone as bad for doing so. I just honestly think they have not put a lot of thought into it because it's more convenient to not see yourself as meat. I bet some humans taste pretty yummy ;)

Thank you very much! I'm not a vegetarian, but I rarely eat meat just out of preference. I remember one time I was eating tuna straight out of the tin (like the animal I am) and it suddenly struck me that I was eating flesh. It suddenly seemed super gross.
@luisca92
5 жыл бұрын
@@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat **I use voice to text to write my replies so my apologies for the long reply** Exactly, I most people would become vegetarians were they to have to bear witness to the process of killing the animal skinning them, draining their blood Etc. That's why these things are so separated from the public. If you got to see that animal grow up and then you had to kill it alar people be changing their tune. I swore to myself that I will only eat meat again if I am willing to hunt the animal and process the meat on my own. Again this isn't something I'm saying particularly to sway people to not eat meat I'm just sharing my own personal experience. One of the largest problems in society today i think is that we are so separated from the physical reality that it takes for us to have the commodities that we have, most people are not aware of their privilege and what has been done in order for them to have what they have. I truly believe that the nihilistic tendencies of people stem from a lack of awareness of what it's taken to get them to where they are. If you are not shown or taught properly the effort both good and bad that it's taken to have the commodities that we have then it's easy to take it as a given and take it for granted because we have the amazing capability to normalize things and to not question. The commodities of first world countries come at the suffering of the countries whose resources are being used. We have been so separated from actual reality that most humanity truly is living in a child like sense of reality, by this I mean the concept of Santa Claus and the Easter bunny Etc. Collectively people are being told a lie and they mostly accept it because the majority accepts it. I truly believe that the generations to come will be the catalyst to a self aware society and a lot of the things that we consider normal and reasonable will be mocked and laughed at in disbelief of how could we have possibly allowed things to happen this way much in the way that we look back at remote times and Marvel at their ignorance in savagery. We are still are those ignorant savages, I would even argue that more so in certain ways.

Gosh! Thank god I'm not alone. I like the taste of non vegetarian food. And I can mostly have it without complications when it is boneless or just another ingredient. But having meat on bone freaks me out everytime. It is just a tiny alarm that goes off in my head, but "This is also all you are, you know. Who is gonna chew _you_ up and ingest _you?_ " is not a thought I need to have while eating.

Finally brought myself to watch Raw on Netflix. The reports of people passing out at screenings seem a bit overblown. I like gore as much as any other discerning horror fan might, but to me, the themes in this felt more uncomfortable than the actual blood and dismemberment on screen (not in a bad way of course, this movie is super compelling!) The only other recent movie to make me feel some of the same things is The Neon Demon. If you like Raw, check that movie out too! Great video essay as always btw :D

I still haven't seen it! I liked Dogtooth but didn't like The Lobster. @@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat Hey, thanks for your answer. Well, imho Lobster has more in common with his other film Alps, and not as much with Sacred Deer which is different in the sense that (apart from the hollywood flair) it's is less surreal, darker in a Kubrick way, theatrical in a greek drama way and unsettling in a Carax way.
