To be honest, I think the sound is fresh and very much in line with FLA. I love the fact that they aren't doing the same thing over and over. I love this culmination of sounds and styles. Saw them live in NYC last month and they were incredible live. Bill and Rhys are really cool people, they were hanging out with the fans before the show. FLA is a creative and forward moving entity, not to mention a class act.

FLA has always been an EBM group first, since they took a lot of their early cues from Front242 and Cabaret Voltaire, and you can still hear that influence today. However, Bill has never let the sound stagnate. He's always trying new things and evolving, finding what works and using it. That's why FLA kicks as much ass now as it did back in the 80's and 90's. Industrial Metal, Dubstep, EBM, it's all just ammunition and ordnance in FLA's epic arsenal.

Dubstep is an evolution of music, I take it on a case by case basis, sometimes I 'LOVE' the sound it gives a song, but sometimes it's horrendous. in this case, I love it, FLA has come a long ways and I respect them greatly for choosing to evolve.

Reminds me of an updated Equinox, a side project of Bill Leeb which was made in 1998, so yeah dubstep has some roots in drum and bass, and has actually been around a lot longer than people think, it just never broke into the mainstream like it has now. I must say the sound quality of this FLA track has improved by leaps and bounds since Equinox, it would be interesting to hear a remastered Equinox (hint hint).

I wonder if he added the dubstep influences just to shake up the purist fans, like he did with the metal on millennium (speaking of which, first FLA album in a very long time with no guitars on it, interestingly enough). Personally I don't like millennium very much but that's really just my personal taste; I really appreciate the fact that Leeb had the audacity to make an album that he knew would shock his fans so much. I think Echogenetic might be the same thing: there's a _lot_ of hate for dubstep among industrial fans, much more than there deserves to be imo, and Leeb may have been trying to make a point for tolerance. Either way, the result was magnificent. Loving this album, although I do wish there was a bit more variety on it. Also, to everyone wishing FLA would "return to their roots:" however awesome it would be to have another Tactical Neural Implant, Caustic Grip, or Hard Wired, trying to lock FLA into a specific style is an insult to the impressive creativity and experimental-ism that made those albums great. If FLA never tried new and different things, we never would have gotten Caustic Grip in the first place! Well, that's my 2 cents on the matter. Hope everyone enjoys the music.

Besides dub step is just a combination of Dub & Two Step in the electronica genre of music, anyway the album Echogenetic isn't a great album but not a bad one either. The combination comes together quite nicely here proving that when done right it makes for an interesting listen, the problem I have with Dub-step is that, that kind of sound should only serve as an enhancement for the music base that is already there, whereas Dub-step uses the enhancement as the musical base itself causing it to sound broken up and sloppy (I hate Dub-step with a passion) I'm just glad we have a creative band like FLA to use it in a way that doesn't make my ears bleed and cause my body to cringe.

To those of you who haven't heard the rest of the album yet, go find other songs from it. This is meant to be the "dance track" of the album, like "Shifting Through The Lens" was on IED, so its going to seem a little more like something you'd hear in a club. I recommend hearing "Leveled" or "Exo"

What u get: Ideas/beats/soundscapes enough for 5 regular songs. Sound quality off the scale (thanks Greg). Experimental music-making that will still stand the test of time. Auto-retinal private mind-movies of a lovingly horrific future. A sense that one is über-sofisticated taste-wise compared to standard sapiens listening to common crap. A nice testosterone rush that one can share with the whole block. And so on and so forth. What u don't get: Same music as previous FLA records re-packaged.

Rules (or characterizations) are meant to be broken, especially in art. I too think this is dubstep style, whether or not it is 100% dubstep is not important, it comes from there. And I actually like how FLA uses elements from dubstep and mixes it with all their other sounds.

I would not say "dubstep" but they were always ahead of their time. Now there is a genre called dubstep which is a form of experimental electronic music. Now FLA comes back with a more electronic Album, in a time where dubstep is nearly "everywhere" so people consider everthing electronic that uses LFOs, distorted chopped basslines etc. as dubstep. btw: Early dubstep (before skrillex, who is hated alot by "old-scool dubstep" fans) sounded completely different than most stuff popular today

@Alex Cailliau:I believe you are referring to the filter frequency build-up during intro. It's actually one of the trademark FLA techniques since...well, Caustic Grip at least.Bill works in loop mode.He programs a sequence, another one, the end result being lots of loops which the 'programmer' can arrange into a song(Rhys, Peterson, etc). The sequence doesn't end there, it's where they chose it to stop using digital audio.I hope this makes sense.

The term EBM was first used by Kraftwerk in 1978 to describe their album "The Man-Machine". It took on its modern(ish) meaning in 1984 when it was printed on the cover of Front 242's album "No Comment". FLA formed in 1986, so i think it's you that needs to get a clue.

As a european who has been listening to FLA since the State of mind album FLA has always been EBM tom me but, EBM has also been a subcatagory of industrial. It seems to me that new catagories seems popping up all the time, I have seen FLA labeled as post-industrial whatever that means. If you look up the State of mind record on the discogs(.)com site it is listed as EBM, Industrial and the Improvised Electronic Device album is listed as EBM, Electro, Industrial so the EBM label seems to fit FLA

my thoughts exactly. funny how people think that a group uses the LFO on their keyboards and all of a sudden it's "dubstep". for one this track is not even the right BPM, and it's MOSTLY four on the floor dance music. lots of CLASSIC front line sound, only updated. haters wanna hate, but too bad those haters don't make albums for 27 years and still still stay relevant like FLA does. boom!

Very different from the FLA of old, and that's not a bad thing. I think everyone needs to chill out about whatever Dubstep elements/influence may be in the new songs. Remember when Millennium came out (for us old-timers)? That was a shocking album with all the Pantera guitar samples. How about "Flavor of the Weak" and its down-tempo/hip-hop beats? "Epitath" is loaded with drum & bass beats, etc. I for one like it when FLA Inc. incorporates new styles.
