When I was taking my license, my instructor told me some gold nuggets: The rear brake is also called the "stability brake" and should be used as such when needed. (to gain some extra stability) this is especially important at slow speeds (walking speed). When braking, the front and rear brakes are used together, never on their own (except for walking speed where the rear break can be used on its own) If you need to brake a lot or hard, you are not planning ahead enough, riding this way will get you hurt. Hard breaking should only be "needed" when something unexpected occurs. Never yank the brakes, squeeze the brakes to maximize control and braking efficiency. Identify "escape paths" when you ride and try to swerve or avoid the problem rather than braking for it. Evasive maneuvers let you maintain control and also get you out of the situation faster. And the best nugget he gave me was that "Everyone is an idiot and you are invisible. It is your job to keep yourself safe."

One detail nearly everyone leaves out is DO NOT grab the clutch in a panic and immediately disengage drive to the rear wheel. When you declutch, you are now free-wheeling, and your speed increases as opposed to just letting off the throttle. in gear. When free-wheeling, even moderate braking can lock up the rear wheel, especially on wet surfaces. Using both brakes, in gear, and declutching as you get to a stop, maintains better control.

Letting off the rear brake is fine, so long as the motorcycle is vertical or close enough not to be thrown into a highside crash. Even with ABS, your maximum stopping force is going to be just before the ABS kicks in, so it will help a bit if you misjudge and apply a bit of extra brake, but other than that it mostly sits there doing nothing.

The rear brake keeps the bike more stable as it doesn't cause the front to dive, but as long as you apply gentle pressure on the front brake you should be fine, these days abs is fitted to bikes which stops the bike from locking up under heavy breaking, if you break in a straight line then you shouldn't lose control, ultimately don't ride fast as this gives you more time to react and don't tailgate. @@PAD32 Officially, we're supposed to start with both brakes, and continually increase front brake pressure while reducing rear brake pressure. But I find that gradually reducing rear brake pressure is simply too complicated. So in my practice stops, for hard stops I simply press the rear and let go. That's the only way I can (a) brake hard while also (b) using both brakes, while also (c) not locking the rear wheel (or perhaps it does lock, but by releasing the rear brake within 1 second, I wouldn't notice this anyway). In a true emergency stop, my strategy would be to use front brake + engine braking (no downshifting, just closing the throttle). If my foot was already above the pedal then I'll press it and release it. But if I wasn't covering the rear brake, then I won't use it (I often cover the front brake, and sometimes the rear brake too). People often think that by practice one can find out how much rear brake one can use before it locks. But I find that this doesn't really work, if you brake hard enough in the front, then the rear will lock with any amount of rear brake pressure, so if we brake hard enough, we have to fully release the rear brake (on non-ABS, obviously it's much easier on an ABS bike).

Every time I've fallen (I'm upgrading from an old 125 to a new R6, so I'm using this one as a beater to learn what to and what not to do) I thought I was locking the rear cause I don't have abs. Now I think they were low sides from over braking on a shitty old front tire. This is massively useful info, thank you!

During my driving training (on a non-ABS bike!) I was tough to completely ignore the rear brake in an emergency situation. Instead focus entirely on brining the front to the maximum, just at the friction limit. That's hard enough. No one can do that for both brakes, maybe a racing driver manages this. The rear brake is the low speed brake that stabilized the bike. For the motorcycle license I needed to show full braking at 50, 70 and 90km/h - quite frightening. Now with an ABS bike this is MUCH easier and MUCH safer!

Pretty much same here. Front brake is what we are told to use most, just learn to do it progressively. We can try to learn using both in emergency situation but most likely we still end up using only one when shit happens and then it is better to use front rather than rear. Rear brake is mostly for low speed maneuvering in a parking lot or tight U-turns.

To really learn how to stop, I took the rear brake peddle off for a month. (This was in 84 when I realized I needed to really use the front brake, which is 70ish % of braking power) It was a little unnerving at first. But at the end of the month I was totally comfortable. I used a Metzler me33 Lazer front tire which 'howled' when it was dragging slightly under high braking force. You could feel this dragging force also. It let me know I was at maximum braking force just before tire lockup. The rear brake dose help.....but the front brake is what saves your life. I rarely ride now, but I noticed I mostly don't even use the rear brake on my 740 pound bike. If you don't have anti lock brakes, you better learn how to use that front brake!

As you stated, it’s possible to apply a lot of breaking power while leaning. The more the bike leans, the lesser the braking gradient must be. In other words, the more a bike leans the smaller the braking variations must be. So if you don’t lean, you can quickly apply or release more brake, but if you lean, you must gently apply or release more brake.

Most if not all superbikes rear brakes won’t lock the rear wheel on a good road surface or sometimes in the wet, rear brake is ok when you need to scrub some speed off in a corner, but experience tells you how much you need, the rear brake pulls you backwards, the front pushes you, one of the reasons you tense your arms when using the front brakes. With a passenger it’s best to use 50-50 to stop the seesaw effect and avoid cracking your helmets together. You must be aware of your surroundings and road surfaces when riding, that will tell you which and how much braking you must use, on track I use a lot of trail braking but experience is paramount in that situation

Allow me to summarize it for you brother. In general, the combined weight of the rider and the bike shifts to the front quite dramatically under braking, regardless of how it's achieved (front, rear, or engine braking). This means the front brake retains most of the braking power as it holds the most mass under braking, which is why only using the rear brake is an awful idea. Doing so can cause the braking distance to double or even triple. However, if you just grab the front brake you risk exceeding the braking power the front tyre can handle, which causes it to lock up and produce a lowside, a kind of crash where the front tyre cannot stabilize the bike anymore and the rider falls to the side of the bike. On the other hand, while applying the rear brake it is far easier to exceed the maximum braking power the rear tyre can handle due to the weight being mostly at the front. When the bike is completely upright, locking up the rear tyre isn't that much of a deal because it only increases the braking distance to some extent. When some leaning is involved, it's a whole different story because a rear lock causes the bike to start drifting, which if managed incorrectly can result in either a lowside if the rear tyre is kept locked or a highside if the rear brake is released too fast, causing the rear tyre to suddenly regain traction. During a highside, the bike drifts in a direction and quickly front flips to the other side, representing a significantly more dangerous situation than a lowside. Combined braking is the most effective braking technique but requires practice, as both brakes (and the transmission as well, even though the video doesn't mention it) need to be managed at the same time, and the aforementioned considerations must be taken into account. Naturally, to those with little to no experience in combined braking it is reccomended to only use the front brake, as it's harder to lock up the front tyre than the rear and it basically never results in a highside. I hope you find this easy to understand man, God bless you.

If you are on the corse with high speed before a curve you must break with the front break as hard as possible before you lean the motorcycle into the curve. When you lean the motorcycle and breaking with the front break that would position the motorbike upright and you left the bike into the green. In the curve only the back break (beside the motorbreak) can reduce the speed with an optimal control because the front weel can be steered as desired to manage a save handling. (Sorry for my bad english.)

Great video, I would just add an important detail. Not only does the front brake have the best stopping force by a huge factor, it also is the most controllable. We get the best "brake feel" via our very sensitive fingertips and also the best combination of power and control from the right hand. We can also fine tune the lever position to improve this. By contrast the rear brake uses the very the relatively insensitive foot for "feel". The foot also has far more power than control while having the least braking power. One of the more interesting braking drills I have done involved riding a Honda CT110 on wet grass at slow speed (less than 10 Km/h) and deliberately locking the front brake/wheel. The idea here is that the feeling of front brake lockup was the same at any speed and we could develop a better sense of this dangerous event with no danger of injury. From personal experience I can verify that a front wheel lockup at 140 Km/h does feel exactly the same as at 5 Km/h, just a lot more terrifying.
