All that design nouse, then you use a hacksaw to cut the oars and mold grip and a plumbers ratchet to install them?

the best way to get the hang of it would be to wear side shields so you dont see the oars moving opposite to what you are expecting. after a while you would stop fighting yourself

Are your gears like swivel plates or are they just sliding sandwiched between the upper and lower plates? Mine use swivels.

Just sandwiched ! Swivel would be an upgrade I think :)

What gears are you using? Did you weld this together yourself?

Hi, Yes, we drew each part of the mechanism on Solidworks, including the gears, and then laser cut them. There is no welding, it's all sheet metal cut, folded and bolted. You can see it well at 0:34. :)

Was that 1/2" stock? I will likely have to find the gears and weld bar stock to them.Thank you for getting back to me.

Yes, the gears shown up there are 1/2" stock. At first, we had 3/16" stainless steel stock, but those failed, so we had to switch for a stronger design. As this was a design project for school, we had tight deadlines so we opted for a much thicker stock, a bit overkill, because we couldn't afford another failure. You can see in this Google drive the gears and mechanism better. drive.google.com/open?id=1fBtYlAhXXkUPzbc3hI2XosXrYiR7ifPF If you're wondering, the black o-rings are teflon for lubrification. No problem, don't hesitate if there's anything else. If you actually do something similar I'd love to see it :)

I ve never understood what the problem is to just row facing forward... It s a lot more intuitive. I ve only ever rowed once, and that was when i was a kid, and the first thing i did was just to sit forward and row like i thought to be the best way, and i cant remember having any problems with it... I think it s a bit impractical to row backwards and have to turn your neck like an owl to see where you re going. What is wrong with rowing forward?

@@diesel4ever273, it takes more effort and the number of strokes per minute is lower than when rowing backward.

The movement is entirely too stiff and it jerks as well. Back to the drawing board.
