Another great video from AA that was a huge help in preparing for my ADS delete. You made locating those top studs in the holes look pretty easy! A couple of potential helpful notes I made: 1) Using the 15/16" open end on the pinch bolt works good in place of a 24mm, but use it on the bolt end as AA did, nut the nut end. And.... I ALWAYS use the box end when I can. Using the open end can cause a round off. Look at tightening the upper stabilizer link and you'll see it start to slip under pressure. 2) I use a piece of painters tape pushed into a socket to keep from losing the nut in a tight space, like the top strut nuts. 3) I wouldn't even consider breaking those pinch bolts without a ¾" breaker bar and a heavy duty cheater tube! They were a superior opponent to my Snap-On® ½" breaker bar and a cheater. As AA said in a comment, "They're a bitch." Great video, and obviously I'm catching up on all of my accolades to you.
@AcuraAddicted

Thank you! Yes, a very good point about using 15/16" instead of the 24mm. For breaking the pinch bolts loose I cheated in the video a little by skipping through the part where I did use an extension tube (from my jack) and actually using all my weight on them. Pretty sure the 1100 lb-ft breaking torque Milwaukee impact would do the trick as well :)

I just completed this last night. Both sides took me about 7 hours (including jacking up car, removing wheels, putting wheels back on, etc.). It's simple in concept but can be challenging at times, such as when you are taking out the old strut and installing the new one and trying to line up the top bolts. It would be great to have another person to help at those times. I also chose to rebuild my struts instead of buying whole assemblies. I used KYB struts and KYB strut mounts, which apparently are the manufacturer of the original Honda OEM parts. I used strut compression tools that you can borrow from Autozone. There's a lot of fearmongering about strut compressors but I have rebuilt 3 sets of struts with them and I have never felt unsafe or had any accidents. But due to the large flange at the bottom of these struts, it's hard to use an impact driver or even a ratchet socket to tighten the screws, so I ended up having to use an open-ended wrench. Very tedious and physically tiring. As I did this job, I came to accept that I am not a young man anymore! Next time I will pay someone else to do it. But if you have the energy, time, and proper tools, it's a relatively straightforward job.
@AllenManor

Update 1 week later: Had strange sounds coming from struts during slow turns. No time to work on it any more so I took it to my mechanic. He said the bearings were binding up for some reason. In less than 2 hours he took them out, took them apart, then reassembled and reinstalled. Don't know what I did wrong but no problems now. He charged me $150 for this which I was more than happy to pay. Bottom line: My mechanic was surprised that I rebuilt the struts and said it's not really worth doing anymore due to time/hassle. I agree with this -- I wish I had just installed OEM strut assemblies from Honda. Would have cost me about $250 more but would have saved me hours of frustration/fatigue plus the $150 I had to pay my mechanic. I am actually thinking it's probably best to just have a mechanic do this job unless you have access to a lift and someone to help as needed.

My previous car (Honda Element) had a similar front strut assembly. The strut mounts failed so I needed to take them out. It was relatively simple to remove the old strut and I elected to rebuild it rather than replace the whole assembly. I borrowed a spring compressor from AutoZone and it worked very well and I never felt I was in danger when I used it, though if there was a failure or you were careless about it, the potential for serious injury or death is very real. Taking apart the old strut was not too complicated though it helped greatly to have an impact wrench to remove the bolt. Reinstalling the rebuilt strut was very straightforward as well. Having said all that, I now feel that rebuilding struts is not worth the time and relatively low cost savings involved, and I was left with the nagging realization that I would have to replace the strut piston assembly sometime down the road. Best to just buy a new assembly for the safety/time savings/overall peace of mind in my opinion. Great video by the way.

Excellent video! Question. When you wiggled out the knuckle or remove from the strut assembly is there a possibility that the driveshaft may disengage or disconnect from the transmission?
@AcuraAddicted
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good question. The knuckle is held in place mostly by the lower control arm and steering rack (tie rods and tie rod ends). The driveshaft also keeps it in vertical position. It doesn’t have a lot of tension, so while there is always a chance, it’s unlikely. Now when it comes to replacing the lower control arm, that is very much a risk. In fact, that hapoened to me. Although it wasn’t the drive which disconnected, but the inner boot, so I had to reconnect it right away.

Great video. I couldn't quite convince myself to do this job myself so I had it done by a shop. My 2012 MDX has 84,000 miles on it. I provided the parts (KYB rear shocks, front struts (strut-only), and strut mounts (bearings) all from Rock Auto). I also provided the torque specs from your video. The result is no more 'clunking' sound going over bumps and less initial sway when cornering, however, the ride is definitely firmer than my worn shocks and probably a little more firm than stock. My only dissatisfaction with this project is that the right front strut makes a little 'pop' when I first back out of the garage and turn the wheel to the right. I'm thinking they disregarded my torque spec for the top flange nut and made it too tight and that the noise is the bearing at the top of strut tower getting moving. What do you think? Should I just re-torque them myself?
@AcuraAddicted
3 жыл бұрын
Glad this helped! The top flange nuts are extremely soft, you need to go gently on them and not overtorque. You can easily open those plastic covers and at least try the torque, but go easy. That being said, the popping sound might be related to something else in the suspension or other component. Even if you didn’t hear it before replacing the shocks, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t there - may be you can hear it now that the overwhelming clunks are gone.

Hello, great channel by the way. I have a 2011 advance model mdx and I was told by dealer not to go to regular oem struts. They said it would possibly cause all wheel drive errors or the damper system error you mention. I think they are just trying to scare me to going the more expensive route but I can’t justify paying that price for advance dampers. I don’t see how this would be a problem besides the error light thing. Do you have any advice or links to parts you mentioned (resistor) for my situation? Thanks again.

Hi Juan. Thanks for your feedback! Yes, there would be an IDS error if you install regular dampers instead of the advanced ones. Unfortunately I don’t have any reputable resistor source links I’m able to share, but I believe you can find them on the internet. Note that if you are replacing the dampers with regular ones, you should be replacing the whole assemblies in the front, as they have stronger springs and different seating configuration. And you can do it yourself, just like shown in my videos, both front and back. Good luck!

Juan: Join MDXERS.org and search ADS and you'll be well informed in no time. I'd never go back in with ADS front or rear. @AcuraAddicted

It's pretty significant and noticeable. Yours may be not so significant, but still I'm sure you will notice. The suspension is generally on the harsh side on MDX, but it's especially distinctive over potholes when you have worn out shocks, like I had. It's generally time to change the shocks when they start to leak, however they may not be leaking and still be worn out, which usually results in more vehicle rocking motion and really hard hammering sounds when passing potholes. I'd say 92K miles is the right time for the replacement. Good luck!

@AcuraAddicted
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tino. You didn't mention what year your MDX is. The part number you mentioned corresponds to the Front Left Strut only for years 2010-2013. It is superseded by 51606-STX-A59. It is not a full assembly, and it does not include the spring and the rest of the construction, so you would have to transfer it from your old shock, which, if you decide to do, I highly recommend paying a shop to do it, because it's dangerous, since the spring can injure or kill you when handled improperly. Also, as left and right are different (right for 2010-2013 is 51605-STX-A59). Remember, these are just the struts, no additional hardware is included. If you decide to buy the full assemblies (meaning you can just swap your old ones with no additional steps, just like I did in this video), here are the part numbers: Front Left assembly: 51602-STX-A59; Front Right assembly: 51601-STX-A59. They are extremely expensive, though (almost $1K a piece). As for the connectors - yes, you would have to disconnect the cables from your old dampers and reconnect them to the new ones when they are installed. Also note that you would have to perform the "Damper force operation" in HDS module after to program them properly. I don't know if you have the HDS, but you can do it at an Acura dealer as well. Good luck!

Hey Bogdan, great videos! Man was it a job getting the bolts loose!!! Almost gave up and decided to give the big lower strut mounting bolts one more try. Got them loose. Problem is I damaged one. In your video the lower bolts you install look brand new. Did they come with your struts? Mine only had nuts for the upper mounting bolts. I see that they are Flange bolts 12X84 mm. I have searched all over the web but can't find the exact size. If your struts didn't include these lower mounting bolts, where did you get them? Thanks, David
@AcuraAddicted
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, David! Yes, despite how easy it looks in my video, the strut lower bolts were a bitch! I bent my hydraulic jack arm using it as a lever to push on the breaker bar, which bent so badly, I though it would snap. It sure would be easier to use a high torque impact. Yes, I used new bolts and nuts - that's what manual says and that's what I got from Acura. They don't come with the dampers, you have to buy them separately. Here are the part numbers: Bolt, Flange (18X76) - 90119-SJC-A00; Nut, Flange (18MM) - 90381-SJC-A00. Hi Bogdan I just replaced my ADS shocks and struts on my 2011 with OEM from an Acura online store. NOW, 1 day after the install, the right front strut is squeaking and rattling continuously while driving along, seems mostly apparent during general road vibrations, pot holes don't seem to make it worse. It also makes a groaning noise when maneuvering into parking spaces. The sounds are so intrusive in the cabin. It almost sounds like it's behind the dash. I have read many pages about suspension squeaks and the like and have tried everything short of uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will be the last option. The noisy damper performs fine absorbing the bumps, no leakes of any kind, it seems normal even during a heavy bounce at low speed over a speed bump. Does this sound as if the strut is defective? Also, I had my repair shop recheck that everything was torqued to Acura specs. The bushings on the stabilizer bar are in good shape, all suspension and steering linkages seem to be fine. I am at stumped! Grateful for any feedback.

On the Elite can the front struts make a "gonking, knocking sound" when going over bumps? Or do they just loose the dampening characteristics of a shock?
@AcuraAddicted
6 жыл бұрын
They should not be making any abnormal sounds. The only two difference of these dampers are thinner springs and magnetic substance instead of regular oil in the struts that changes stiffness characteristics based on the electric current going through it. The principle of how the dampers work is no different, though. If the dampers are making these sounds, something is wrong with them. These active dampers are easily diagnosed at any dealership on a stand.

Acura doesn’t repair suspension components, they just replace them. A new driveshaft assembly is only $200, the labour cost is about right.

@@PHxNiteRider Yes, they actually upgraded the ADS assemblies, and there was a program for replacing those beyond warranty. It's mentioned in my video at 1:55. It's over now, but you can swap the ADS to non-ADS for about USD 800 for all four corners. That includes front assemblies.

Thanks for the advice. But I bought the truck with 155k on it. So I think it was swapped before. Well because I didn't have the electronic suspension on it... Am not sure if all of them came with it. I have the tech(with navy) package I believe.

@@PHxNiteRider Your MDX with TECH Package does NOT have the fancy (expensive) suspension. NO need to buy those expensive OEM parts. Left Front Strut Assemby = Gabriel # G57560. After all everithing looks OK..Now i do not know ,,Did rockauto shipped me two right ones or i switch them...My question is ,,,Is it so bad or I can drive like this and make an aligment monday..I bought the 5 ohm 10W and 2ohms 10w resistors to,deal with tne ADS light..If i have to,switch them will be pain in the asssss.What is your recomendation brother.So I can switch them

I didn’t even know someone produced assembly replacements. Have you seen both of them at the same time enough to see any differences? You should have gotten two different assemblies for left and right. Do you have the boxes, is there any part number indication on the assemblies themselves and boxes?

So if I change out my OEM ADS suspension for non-ADS KYB shocks and struts, I can't use the OEM strut springs on the new KYB struts?
@AcuraAddicted
5 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can't. I think you shouldn't. Because the ADS damper assembly springs are thicker as they are designed specifically for ADS shocks. You might not be satisfied with the ADS springs + regular shocks combo. It is also possibly not very safe.
@JmanRx81

Acura Addicted is the standard coil spring the same left or right? Or is there specific left and right part numbers?
@AcuraAddicted

@@JmanRx81 Yes, left and right springs are different. The right one is 51401-STX-A03. The left one is 51406-STX-A03. But why are you buying springs and shocks separately? You will also need new hardware, such as mounts and stuff. They cost less as an assemblies, and this way you can swap them directly.

+desean richardson The full set of shocks with new bolts and nuts cost me around $800 Canadian dollars including taxes. Considering my rebate at the dealership, it would cost closer to a thousand dollars without any rebate. So basically buying OEM shocks would already mean you are out of one grand Canadian. The labour cost at the dealership for this would probably be another $500, if not more. You can save some by going to an independent mechanic or doing it yourself, like I did.
