Yes, Sir, I agree, from everything i've read, it seems that inexperience/lack of knowledge sometimes and in other cases corruption, bad leadership was the reason behind that attitude. This is widely exemplified with the Ap Bac battle in Jan. 1963, still in the ''advisers period''. But should be said that the paratroopers and the Rangers were very professional, probably not as good as the American counterparts, but apparently much more motivated and inmersed in the war they were fighting, than the regular ARVN. Examples of this are the TET offensive and the participation in the lifting of the Khe Sanh Siege in Jan.-July 1968. My respect to you and greetings from Argentina.

I ran over a full size Blue Bird school bus on Thunder Road. We were in a M88 VTR tank retriever heading back south to Lai Khe, running about 30 MPH at night, blacked out. I saw the outline of the bus and stupidly did not ask my driver if he did too. He didn’t. We went up, over , and through that bus, crushing it to about a foot high, knocking the engine down the road. My driver freaked out, thinking it was occupied, I had to straighten him out while scanning the immediate vicinity for ambush. We got our act together and proceeded into Lai Khe. Oh, forgot that the gunner dropped a M79 grenade round into the engine compartment before we started out. Fortunately it didn’t cook off on our journey. C/1/16 mech BRO.

My respect to all US veterans of the Vietnam War, so crazy war and bad for human beings in so many ways, in the context of the Cold War and the fight against comunism. I'd like to add that these tracked vehicles such as the M-113 were and are very good for light transport, light to medium support and their armor provide good protection against sniper fire, but one of the lessons of the Vietnam War is that both the M-113 and M-48 Patton Tanks, such as the ones seen in the video, should never go into the dense jungle, since the landmines, molotovs and rocket propelled grenades make the tankers and crews an easy target. Plus, in urban areas the lesson extracted is that all armored vehicles should operate along infantry to expel the enemies from a building, rather than operate alone and frontally exposing in each corner or dense urban area. As of the M-113, i understand it was very used in small numbers in the Gulf War (1990-91) and Irak-Afghanistan occupations, before not longer being in service. But in thirld world, which is full of open roads, and countryside, the M-113 are stil used and evenwere improved with new weapons and tactics using the lesson of Vietnam. Greetings from Argentina!

The former French colony where 60.000 Americans and probably 500,000 Vietnamese died after the French gave up and pulled out in early 1950's. 10 out of 10 probably don't know the Vietnamese/ Ho Chi Minn asked the USA for help to rid the country of French before the Japanese invaded during the 1930's. The British met a crushing defeat here in WWII at the hands of the Japanese. The VietMinh fought the French colonists, fought the Japanese, fought the French (again), then fought the Americans in the 1960's. by this time they were called the Vietcong. Each of the US-backed Saigon regimes were more corrupt then the previous and the population had zero faith or trust in the government. The US poured (poured) $$Billions into this charade knowing by 1965 (re: Pentagon Papers) the "war" was unwinnable and a "waste of blood and treasure"...and definitively not a threat to the United States or any of their allies in the region. It was a war without a purpose or direction or strategy, without goals or any possible way to measure success. The politicians who sent these kids there sent them based on a lie and furthered the lie until the 1973, when Nixon pulled the rug out from the Saigon regime, to the ignominious end and the final disgraceful fall of Saigon in 1975.

Douglas A-1 Skyraider came in after they have been withdraw from service by Taiwan and Honduras. Only M113, UH1, F5E are new equipments. First generation M48 was reluctantly transferred from used Marines when they already had upgraded version. My cousin was an ACAV Captain in VN. He said they murdered many hundreds of enemy in the Rubber Plantations. The VC thought they’d use the drainage ditches for cover, except the ACAV just lined-up and shot straight down those ditches with 50cals, if the enemy jumped out to run they got mowed-down by yet more MGs and Canister from the tanks. Slaughtered enmasse.

Fighting against tropic jungle territory is actually easy and no need many force to fight there. Basically jungle is like candle ready to be light up. It is like atomic bomb with chain reaction of fire, just wait till it summer for six month then let it fire,, it will burn all enemy that choose to hide in the middle of the jungle and cause them in enormous casualties, and the smoke, caused by the fire, would make hard for breathing even if the enemy dig a tunnel, it just worsen their position because all air would be smoke and could smoke for weeks even months. This strategy also can lure the enemy who trying to put out the fire so they can be shot on sight. and if they survive that, the oppen terrain caused by the fire would cripple their advantage for fighting in Guerilla warfare. there will be no place to hide, no place to camouflage, and eventually it will force them to face in one-on-one desert style warfare. You can flood all lands by tanks with no worry for any enemy hiding. The fire also would kill snake, tiger, and other dangerous animal which live in the jungle and the smoke cause by the fire would also kill mosquito, so there will be no any malaria for troops that fight there... Jungle is like atomic bomb of chain reaction of fire, the difference is there will be no nuclear radiation after it boom so it can be occupy again. Just take animal and plant sample before for cultivation and then plant another tree again after you win so within 5 to 10 year the trees would grow again. Or plant trees at another places before to balance climate change. It might be sound overwhelmed for causing trees but what can i say,, it is war, it would cause tree in the end. And i will not trade one of my men life for a tree.. This plan can be modified and might not suited for a damn political cold war but it might be used by someone like Mongolian Genghis Khan kind of warfare, so don't try this immediately because this is an annihilation strategy that can also drag civilian casualties tremendously... this is f***ing dangerous plan if you know what i mean, Lol. Used only if situation is getting heat and you have no other options...

i 'll never get it...all those soldiers, machinery, equipment, support, medical personnel etc...but still they weren't allowed to complete their goal! My dad, an Infantryman in the South Pacific during WWII would have to remind me that Vietnam was a "different kind of war, son", he'd try to explain things to me. God bless all that generation who went thru hell, not only over in Nam, but often times even after returning home! Thank you man and women for your service, and those that went to Canada, only God knows what you were going thru at that crazy time!

Why some of these tanks have small canons and others have big canons?
@danepatterson8107
4 жыл бұрын
The long cannons you see are firing traditional Armor Piercing or High Explosive. The short Cannon is on a different type of tank designed to fire a guided Missile that was both armor piercing and high explosive (High-Explosive Anti-tank, or HEAT). It turned out the Missile idea wasn't a good fit for main battle tanks and they have stayed with anti-armor as the primary focus of the Cannon. You have 3 machine guns for infantry.

Scissors bridge is an AVLB, an armored vehicular launched bridge which was a scissors bridge that was 60 feet across when extended and it traveled on an M60 tank chassis. It was usually assigned to armor, armored cavalry and engineer units.
