I started crocheting at the age of 5 with my granny. I wanted something new to learn as I bought a shuttle and just used the thread I already had to start practicing. Now I feel comfortable shuttle tatting I have started needle tatting. The problem I have with needle tatting is when I turn it does not look smooth. The last few stitches do not lay correctly. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have looked for a needle tatting video on turning work but I can not follow the one I found. I need one that takes me from ring to chain to ring to ring without a break in the work so I can figure out where I am turning the work the wrong way to cause the issue I have. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. I have learned so much from you!

Lori Massey Hi Lori and Thank you for watching. Now to help with the problem your having. One thing that could be an issue is when you turn the work the needle has to lay right up next to the starting point for a ring or a chain. Second problem is that your probably using wrong sized needle with thread. You can step down one size on the needle to get a much tighter tatted piece however if you step up in size it will make it very loose and sloppy and it will not lay right. To me needle tatting has it place in tatting however they say every pattern can be tatted by both shuttle and needle. I find when needle tatting a shuttle pattern I usually have to make some adjustments in needle size, number of double stitches and things like that to get it to look like it should. I also am working closely with Georgia Seitz the owner of the online beginners class on a new video series for that class as well as the shuttle class and the advanced class. Those will be starting in the fall. It is really going to help the new tatters in a way like never before and they are offering tat alongs for both shuttle and needle many new patterns coming out as well for the classes. Here is the link to the beginners class page so you can get signed up for fall classes. They have just ended for summer break however there will be some special events over the summer you really don't want to miss and the best part this is all free to whomever wants to learn to tat all the way thru to those who want to enhance there skills. www.georgiaseitz.com/newtat/index.htm. I do hope you will sign up for the fall semester and join us. You will even get to chat with some famous tatters like Marilee Rockley, She will come in sometimes and teach a special class so your learning from some of the best tatters around. I hope I helped you. If you should have any other questions do feel free to ask. Happy Tatting

Thank you so much for your help. I prefer shuttle tatting but some patterns call for needle tatting so I figured I should learn. I will down size my needle to see if that helps. I have signed up for fall classes and I am excited to learn everything I can. I will look for the summer special events as well. I love tat alongs and wish there were more of them. Thank you for everything you do. Happy tatting!

Hi joanne, If I am understanding you correctly your chains are not going in the correct direction once you have done your ring. If that is correct and what your saying then it has to be that you did not tie off after the ring and turn the work to get the working thread in the correct position. That is if I am understanding the question correctly. Let me know if this is not the question you have and together we can figure it out. Happy Tatting
