A 4k walk - raw footage, real sounds, real life, no filters - in Frosolone: an almost ghost town in Italy. Located in Molise, the smallest region in southern Italy, with a population of around 2,797 inhabitants.
I used to spend summer holidays here, when I was a kid. After about 30 years, I returned for the first time. Little has changed, there are fewer and fewer people, but the village is maintaining itself well.
This fascinating town, as many others in the country, is facing the 'Ghost-city' phenomenon. This phenomenon has been particularly pronounced in rural areas, where factors such as economic decline, changing demographics, and urbanization have contributed to the desertion of once-thriving communities. Italy has experienced a declining birth rate and an aging population, leading to a reduced workforce in rural areas. This demographic shift, coupled with the lack of economic opportunities, has accelerated the depopulation of many towns, as younger residents seek a future elsewhere.
The etymology of Frosolone is debated, but it seems to be traceable to the Latin term fre(n)sus, derived from frendere, meaning 'to grind' or 'to crush.' This comes through the form *fresulu, to which the suffix -ōne is added, referring to a place prone to landslides, with rock debris.
