It must be said that while these kits are great for building individual unique models for small skirmish games, they’re not so good for building large units. There’s rarely enough parts to give all the models unified equipment, so e.g. if you need a unit of 10 gnoll archers, you’ll be buying 40 gnolls total (two boxes). The fantasy boxes are also pretty short on shields, so if it’s important in your rules that everyone has a shield you need to find extras elsewhere. Really great for kitbashing, not so much for your typical 40k style squads (8 identical troopers, special and sarge).

It has to be said that Northstar, the manufacturer of these kits, also makes miniatures for Oathmark, a rank-and-flank fantasy wargame, and the Xgrave kits are fully compatable with these. So when you combine all the Frostgrave boxes with the Oathmark range, the diversity of models is pretty astounding. Here´s the full list of the Oathmark kits: Dwarf Infantry Dwarf Heavy Infantry Dwarf Light Infantry Elf Infantry Elf Light Infantry Elf Cavalry Goblin Infantry Goblin Slaves Goblin Wolf Riders Orc Infantry Human Infantry Human Cavalry Skeleton Infantry Revenant Infantry (heavily armored skeletons) All the infantry boxes have 20 models, all the cavalry boxes have 15 models, all are priced around 30$. Plus, they have A TON of blister packs with unique models for characters, comanders, generals and such, which cost between 7$ and 10$. They packs usualy come with two figures. It´s absolutely crazy value for money.

Also, as a mom, I think this is an awesome option for those with kids who might like the hobby, but don't want to (understandably) pay the super high cost of GW kits for kids who simply aren't going to do a super job. Stargrave miniatures have that cool "classic" Sci-Fi aesthetic, reminiscent of Star Wars and Star Trek and all that good vintage stuff. Most Sci-Fi miniatures are just looking too much like 40K stuff, because they're trying to hit the proxy model market, which is absolutely understandable, as this is a good business decision, but man, I longed to see some "regular" Sci-Fi stuff, without all the skulls, vax seals and crucifixes. I absolutely love these. I've purchased for my homebrew wargames, and they're absolutely great. I certainly plan on buying several more Stargrave and Frostgrave stuff in the future.

I do like the Frostgrave minis. I have Wizards I/II and Soldiers I and recently was looking at making a miniature for a D&D game; though I ultimately ended-up going with a 3d Print instead, as there was nothing that really stood out to me for the character I envisioned in the parts I had. Now, that said a few things: GW makes beautiful, great looking minis, BUT, they're overwhelming. A lot of times I just look at them and think about all the stupid little details and trash that I need to paint, whether that's on the mini or the base and I just shut down. Just today I'm finishing-up some Bolt Action minis and they're just such a relief and breath of fresh air, so simple, few details and they look fantastic. This goes double for the vehicles, which just being historical means I paint them one color, even the details, since usually shovels and the like were painted to match, do some weathering and boom, done. I don't feel exhausted thinking about the Bolt Action stuff I need to paint before my next tournament. Now, all this said, I'd be curious about your thoughts on "Gaming Overload". At this point in my hobby life, I have the following: Warhammer 40k, Warhammer AoS, Warcry, Kill Team, Battletech (Alpha Strike and Full Fat), Bolt Action, Flames of War, SPQR, Gaslands, Frostgrave & Star Wars Legion and frankly, I feel overwhelmed. I had to hide my Minis for Star Wars, Frostgrave and SPQR because I feel overwhelmed looking at them and thinking about these games, a few of which I have never even played. All I really play at this point is AoS occasionally, Bolt Action fairly often and Battletech occasionally and those feel like "My" games if you catch my meaning. There's so much out there now and I'm hearing about more every day and getting a little FOMO, if I'm honest. I have people to play with (thankfully), but limited time (wife, two small kids) and so I default to my favorites or the one my group often most wants to play (AoS). I feel a little bad about this and I'm tempted to sell off a few of my lines of Minis, but worried that someday some friend will make a push to play one and I won't have the Minis anymore to play with them. Some stuff I don't mind, Battletech and Gaslands get played infrequently, but I love both those games aesthetically and they're damn cheap to get into AND they don't take up a lot of space, but others...I dunno. Sorry this is a bit of a rant and kind of long, but thinking about Frostgrave got me on the subject, as it was one of the first games I branched out into. Loved it for a minute, but haven't played it in over a year now and my Minis for it just sit, unloved, along with many others.

Stargrave minis are my favourite sci fi minis by far on the market for multi part hard plastic the only thing that's missing is a heavey armoured version with close combat weapons.

These are great kits. Recently i bashed the wizards and cultist kits together to make a couple of verrotwood warbands.

Thanks for the video. And yes, you should do a video on the diminishing returns.

I have Frostgrave Soldiers and Soldiers II. They are smaller than I am used to, but I love them. Great price, lots of options and usable in any game.

I love the sense of humour of some of the sculpts one of my Frostgrave Knights is carrying a recently murdered chicken in his left hand.
