When a horse is nervous or stressed it may rear as well, which was probably the reason here. I will never understand the point of having a double bridle if you can’t even use it properly. It’s not meant to be used one handed, you need two. He’s got contact on the reins and is keeping the horse away from the public walking round. His reins are pretty slack most of the time, and seeing as they have to hold them with one hand, he’s doing pretty well. The horse is clearly just acting up. It’s probably been standing there for a while, and it’s completely natural for beings to be bored by that. If the bit was abuse, you’d know. That rider would be on the floor and the horse would be constantly trying to relieve pressure on its head, but not in the way it does in the video. Don’t pretend you know more about riding than people taught in the military, which essentially created the form of riding used today. The horses in Her Majesty's Household Cavalry, ie, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals, are some of the most pampered equines on the planet! I've been fortunate enough to witness their exercising every day in Hyde Park and it's a pleasure to see the extraordinary relationship between these officers and their mounts. You are absolutely right - pony-club amateurs with no concept of the reality of these professional soldiers and their horses. Even the Queen's own horse, I think it was Burmese, played up during the Trooping the Colour one year - and neither horse nor rider (HM) were 'novice' in that situation. And that is all this horse is doing - playing up.

Yes of course his tack could be bugging him, but these horse have the type of care we can't get our heads round. The horse was just being a turd because the other horses left him and he wasn’t happy about it. There was no harsh spurring or harsh yanking on the bit. Yes he had contact with the reins but what was he just supposed to let the horse have a loose rein and continue throwing his tantrum and plow into the public crowds? The horse's distress is caused by the tunnel, the tunnel echo, plus the traffic and some idiot yelling out orders. He was excited at the beginning of the video when he was behind the other horse. It escalated when the other horse left him. Then the guy on the ground tried to back him into the tunnel. When that didn't work, the rider took the horse the way the other horses went and, once more, he and the guy on the ground tried to force the horse into the tunnel to no avail. Then he just gave up. Don't they do desensitizing and ground training in Britain?

abby Hitchmough You clearly know nothing about it (or about spelling). There was nothing he could do if the horse wouldn't settle. They are young, cavalry chargers specially bred in Co. Kildare, and feisty as hell. (The older, steadier ones usually go to the band in due course.) There was recently a horse in training that reacted to bus stops. I've known a horse react to a leaf or being stared at by a cat. I'm not HC, just a retired 'crab' (RAF), but I know enough about horses to say the horse may have been reacting to the shadow, the traffic, the tourists, or could have had a sore mouth, probably from pulling on the bit (no horse would go on parade in that state). Probably the next stage would have been for an experienced Warrant Officer or Senior NCO to take a look and if need be by then (some horses will settle if you give them a mint) advise the Orderly Officer to withdraw the horse and call the duty Veterinary Officer. I recall a drum horse apparently misbehaving when in fact a bee had got under his saddle and stung him. Horses are very quick to tell us there's a problem but can't tell us what is. A good rapport with the rider helps: you must expect the possibility of trouble if you put a relatively inexperienced horse with a relatively inexperienced trooper.

Every time one of the videos are posted people immediately jump to the conclusion the horse must be in pain or discomfort. Never occurs to them that maybe the horse is just being temperamental. IT HAPPENS. Just look at the sign next to the guard house - Warning horse may bite or kick. These horses are well looked after, with full time farriers and vets on hand. And, the troopers are required to take care of their mounts before they take care of themselves.

Whenever a presumably well trained and experienced horse is acting up like this, know that there IS a reason for its behavior. Check the bit and bridle, to be sure they're fitted correctly and not tangled up. Check the tack, check the saddle, check the saddle pad. Check the horse's feet and legs. When these possibilities are ruled out, now you may have reason to think this is a behavior issue. Barn sour, not in the mood to be working...it happens. Horses most definitely have distinct and complex personalities and sometimes they just do not want to be put to work while tomorrow they may be just fine with it. But check for physical causes FIRST because if there is a physical problem, it is the handler's duty to remove the source of discomfort in short order. It's just a matter of being a responsible caregiver to animals.
@justjaguar2314

Maybe the horse wasn't trained properly, but I kinda see faults of the rider more. He was pulling on the reins, while spurring the horse. Pulling on reins = (incorrectly) stop/go backwards. everyone’s so quick to run to claiming it’s bits, spurs, the rider..when actually if you knew the first thing about innate horse behaviour then you’d release it’s because the other horses were leaving him, they are social animals and have a very strong evolutionary instinct to be with other conspecifics all of the time. the horse would be used to the tack and the rider..he has that everyday for hours, it’s not that and stop running to bit abuse! they’re only bad if used incorrectly, they can be in a lot of cases safer than some bitless bridles such as hackamores, which cause more harm through more pressure than some bits!
