That's an interesting setup! You're very smart! I am going to remember that bulkhead water tightness info, now I know silicone doesn't bind to plastic, thank you :) There's more than one way to do things, and several times during the video I noticed some differences between our methods. Some thoughts: I have fish in up to six inches of water with no water movement. The oxygen seems to readily diffuse through such a shallow depth. The tiniest of fry seem to benefit from lower / no current. Another thought: plants such as ceratophyllum like you have in your video can eat nitrogen such as ammonium straight from the water column. Diana Walstad wrote a book, Ecology of the Planted Aquarium, where she shows they remove even more than 20 mg/L ammonium in 4 hours (the amount that kills half the population of fish is 0.4 mg/L). So I have for the past several years been raising fry in water change free tanks with plants growing and removing the nitrogen. If you put an undercabinet light over your tanks (I rest mine right on top of the tanks, or you can attach it to the underside of the shelf above), plants would grow well. I actually have to be careful that total dissolved nitrogen (ammonia + nitrite + nitrate) doesn't stay at 0 mg/L or the plants will run out of food. (The solution is to add flakes to feed the plants)

Great job. Ideally you want the gasket not he hose barb side so water doesn't migrate down the threads. For pvc drain lines I silicone the fittings for water proof but alterable fittings. Here is a rack I just completed last weekend: duxYOJbuCXI

Drips were thought of, but then I would not be able to easily use water with different parameters. Some species I need require soft water.

adding hose clamps will help prevent leaks as well, i agree, using a drip line would eliminate the need to change water, have you considered keeping all of the overflow lines on the back side of the rack to give you better access to the bins?

consider using uniseals instead of bulkheads along with a double barbed fitting to connect the hose and the uniseal.

I do not have easy access to the back of the rack, so resetting the drain lines every time I need to take a bin down toe empty the fry out of it would be a pain. I also do not want a drip because then I cannot easily change the water parameters in the bins (hard water for some, ro for others). Plus, doing the water changes forces me to pay attention to the bin.

Quick question..??!! LOL Brand: Hydor (on closeout sale at local store). Controller/rheostat: No. Set at whatever temp it was set at, and i kept the bins at 78 in a 74 degree room. I needed two to cover all four shelves. I would be wories about larger fish jumping out.

Hey quick question on the heating strip... What brand is that? Do you have it connected to a temp controller? Or is it a set temp? Does each row have it's own strip or is it one continuous strip? Have you thought about keeping small to small-med type fish in those tubs? Any thing from 2in-8in max?

that sponge material is too coarse , i learned the hard way , when i had 50 discus fry get stuck and could not get back out . also the rubber gasket should go on the outside , right now the water could migrate through the threads and cause a leak . other than that , .....nice set up.!

Are the undergravel heaters there because your room is not heated, or you want them to be hotter
@TedsFishroom
6 жыл бұрын
I wanted them to be hotter, and the tubs were uncovers so evaporation was cooling the water too much. Yes, heating increased evaporation, but the temperature remained constant with the cables.

I appreciate that this system makes water changes easy however it seems incredibly wasteful of RO water. Your buns are only half full so you are adding the same amount of RO water to each bin every time you do a 50% water change; what you end up with is 50% old water combined with 50% new RO water. This then drains away through the bulkhead to drop the water lever back to where it started. Half of the water running away to waste is your brand new RO water.
