I’ve got to say man this has been a life saver, for a long time when I’ve been pushing my fry it’s sounded very “dry” and after doing the baby excercise, I’ve been pushing an overtone/distortion just slightly “below” where the actual gritty fry is, this instantly got me to exactly where I wanted to be and couldn’t figure out

I learned fry scream when I was sixteen, 7 years ago. Since quarantine I have stopped using it and It's become weak. When people asked me how to do it, I told them even if you placed your throat right now like me you couldn't make the same sounds as through training the throat adjusts over time. I feel like I'm experiencing what I told them. My throat hasn't been used to the fry scream now and even if I remember how to do it, it comes out a lot weaker. In my peak, my mid scream sounded half-good compared to yours (I tended to start low and go fake-low on a high scream placement) and the high scream was 85-90% as good as yours, on a good day. Thing is, compared to other screams, I understand the nature of fry scream is not as loud as other techniques (is that right?). I used that as an excuse to abandon the technique fry scream and train false chord, which progresses very slowly and is harder to find a place to train it right since its louder.. I came across your video and other than a couple of questions my main one is: Because I have the memory and knowledge on how to place my throat I'm a little impatient pushing through, will doing these help me get my level back and even better and more healthily? P.S.: I noticed using false chord distortion cancels my ability to fry scream even more, is that a thing or am i doing something wrong? Thank you so much!!

Hello! I went through a similar process but with the false chord a couple of years ago when I took a long break from doing vocals. My false chord was very breathy and weak even when I knew how to find a proper setting of the voice and placement for the distortion. I needed to be very patient, practice as if I was a beginner and organise more rehearsals with my band (and not miss them as often as I did back then). In a matter of about 1 year I over-grown my past technique and achieved much deeper and fuller sound of my false chord. I write about it because it can happen to everyone, no matter the technique they use. If practicing false chord makes you unable to fry scream, then it might be that your vocal folds are too active while false chord screaming. It can be caused by too high air pressure, blowing too much air with the sounds you make or improper support. It's hard to tell without hearing your practice. Technically, the fry scream can get as loud as false chord or maybe even louder but from what I observe during lessons with my students, it's something quite individual. Just like with the speaking voice - some poeple are quiter, some louder and by doing exercises they can balance their volume (sound louder or avoid being too loud while speaking) but it's a process that can take a few weeks, months or even years. Developing a higher volume or intensity of vocals is like growing muscles by working out at the gym etc. It's a process that requires time and improvement of the technique (you learn how to use a leverage that helps you to lift heavier weights without using too much effort) and just as in the case of working out, a long break might cause a muscle loss, weakness or can worsen your technique which will make you take a few steps back, improve everything that you forgot and work your way up step by step again. I went through it with my voice, usually because of various illnesses that caused a massive weakness of the whole body but every time I was able to get back to the point from before the illness etc. and then to over-grow my previous state. If you feel that your placement is right, try to discover what types of sounds, exercises, syllables etc. help you to get even a basic scream that isn't a whisper sream and isn't over-projected. It can be smaller than it was earlier but it should be of a good quality. Once it's something easy, consistent and sustainable you can try to gradually increase the intensity of your vocals and they won't lose their quality or level of comfort. Practicing with the exercises in this video might help but you can also test other stuff. There are many videos dedicated to the fry scream on this channel. I don't know what exactly is your current situation so it's hard to recommend anything specific. It would be easier if I listened to your vocals. Here's the fry scream playlist: kzitem.info/news/bejne/q3mJvXyOmJafZGU Here's a video with exercises for improving the projection of the fry scream: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pXmf1nl9oXh0qX4

What really helped me was making stupid and crazy noises in random moments when I'm alone (throughout the first days) or with my friends (after I told them that I practice singing and screaming). In the beginning it felt almost traumatizing but every day started to be easier and easier. Then I participated in an accoustic evening where people played Guns&Roses and ballads, and I was performing songs by Death a cappella xD This was so horrible experience for my comfort zone that it "cured" me from any embarassment or lack of confidence forever :D I was like "nothing is going to be worse than this". The owner of venue talked to me later almost with tears in his eyes and was like "Never give up man", haha. Of course, I don't encourage you to do the same thing, I am surprised that I didn't quit vocals after this situation. It was 1000% cringe.

Hey! Great tutorial, I get a strange sounding hiss from the back of my throat as I do my fry scream. Sounds right minus that hiss, not sure if that's healthy, nor do I like the sound of it. Any tips to get rid of it?
@sibilaextremevocal
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you! About the hissing sound, it can be a result of too much air pressure while making a scream. Decreasing the volume/ pitch or pressure in the throat can help to get rid of it but it's hard to tell for sure without hearing how you do it. Feel free to send me a recording if you have one - xvocalcenter@gmail.com is my mail.

I need to really learn how to do the Fry Scream. I always listen to Devin Townsend, and I never can hit the screams like he does. I can do the growls he does, but not the Fry Screams, like in Deadhead, in that song he does it, like very high pitched Fry Scream, I think around F5, so there's no problem for me to hit the note in falsetto or whatever, but not in the way of Fry Screams the way Devin does it.. I will try some of these warm up exercises you did here man. I was wondering what you thought of some Devin Townsend screams and his technique?

It sounds like a belted mix voice (reminding me of Tim Ripper Owens or Rob Halford) combined with the fry. It's between belting and fry screaming. Very solid resonance, the sound is sharp and high but at the same time feels opened and not constricted. I guess it requires pretty much effort but it sounds healthy. Opened throat, properly set resonance (head resonance - not a head voice, head resonance means enabling the sound to flow closer to our sinuses, area of forehead and even towards the top of head) and the ability to support without clenching belly and throat are the essentials for making such screams. It can be trained but requires (for the most of people) a good teacher. I went on opera singing lessons to learn how to do it and it really helped me to gain more comfort, decrease any kind of unnecessary tension, develop my range and even improve my fry scream.
@lopolik

@@sibilaextremevocal your fry screams are really good, man. I've considered getting a teacher to improve my singing / screams too. I always get angry when I try some scream, and I cannot make it sound that great.. Some I can do decent, but as I said these kind like Devin does are so hard for me to do.. I think actually those like the between belting and fry screaming are the hardest for me man. Halford type screams are also hard, but not as hard as some of Devin's screams, for me at least.
@sibilaextremevocal

Those type of vocals (combo belting + fry scream) are the top notch shit for any vocalist in the metal scene :D Of course it's possible to learn and nail it but it definitely requires proper and regular practice.
