We sold this 1989 BMW R100GS 2 years ago to one of our business partners, at that time it had 28379 miles showing, During the period he owned this machine he performed a fair amount of service maintenance. This included overhauling the front brake system including a new master cylinder and a new front brake rotor. New spark plugs and wires, carbs were synched, valves adjusted, and fresh oil and filter. This BMW is ready to ride!
We received some history from the previous owner revealing that the original owner was a well-known machinist and BMW enthusiast from Redwood City, CA. The bike was acquired from the original owner with approximately 22,000 miles on it. The second owner added about 4,000 more miles before selling it to his cousin in Seattle in 2016, at which point it had around 26,000 miles. Since then, it has been meticulously maintained by the excellent team at Vallantine Motor Works, with the most recent service in 2019 at 28,247 miles. Steering head bearings were replaced just before we received in 2022
This R100GS is in fantastic condition, with no significant modifications, making it hard to find an R100GS in such excellent shape. It comes with the original side cases, the bumblebee two-up seat, a box of spare parts, and the original tool kit.
We have two factory keys and a WA title.

Continuing with 40 Years of the BMW GS series, we arrive at the next generation: the BMW R 100 GS. Debuting in mid-1987, the R 100 GS built on the success of the R 80 G/S, which, although "discontinued," evolved into the R 80 GS. Both models now represented Gelände/Sport instead of Gelände/Straße, a designation that would eventually revert to the original. Both bikes promised higher performance, improved comfort, and better brakes. The R 100 GS borrowed its engine from the 1986 R 100 RS sport-tourer, the first production bike with a full fairing, which helped establish the modern sport-tourer segment. This engine produced 60 hp from its 980cc Boxer, while the R 80 GS retained its 798cc engine, producing 50 hp.
The R 100 GS marked another milestone in the GS evolution as it was the first BMW production motorcycle to feature the now-famous "Paralever" swingarm. BMW engineers had been aware of "shaft jacking" for some time, a phenomenon where the rear of the bike rises under acceleration due to stiffening suspension. Alex von Falkenhausen, BMW's race engineer, had equipped factory race bikes with double-joint swingarms since 1955 to counter this effect. Although BMW had patented this technology, it was never transferred to street bikes until the new, more powerful engine made the problem more pronounced. The additional bar gave the swingarm a parallelogram shape, hence the name "Paralever." This innovation worked so well that it was later adopted for the R 80 GS.
BMW didn't stop there. To enhance handling, travel-dependent damping was introduced at the front. The forks were strengthened, with the left fork gaining a conical bushing. As the fork compressed, the cone reduced the gap between the spring coils, acting like a rising rate spring to withstand jump landings. BMW also equipped the bike with a hollow front axle to prevent fork distortion. Additionally, the R 100 GS featured cross-spoke wheels for the first time, allowing for tubeless tires and facilitating spoke replacement without removing the wheel or tire.
The BMW R 100 GS was a groundbreaking model for BMW. While the R 80 GS pioneered this new category of bikes, the R 100 GS updated and refined the concept, selling over 34,000 units. As my mechanic aptly describes it, the R 100 GS is a "pavement-indifferent" touring bike.
