Patrict Great review and detail as always. For sure bring info about the FS switches, cable and transceivers to small business owners with Data Centers is a great service. Have bought many things from them and their pricing is exceptional. This is the next FS switch I plan to purchase for the Data Center: S8050-20Q4C, 20-Port Ethernet L3 Fully Managed Plus Switch, 4 x 10Gb SFP+, with 20 x 40Gb QSFP+ and 4 x 100Gb QSFP28 Uplinks. Would really enjoy seeing your review on this guy. This switch is playing the role of tying both an All Flash NAS storage device and NVMe NAS storage unit together with a Dell R750 PowerEdge Server all running through either 100Gbs or 40Gbs NICs.

I have two of the fs switches that we got in for testing. They have not gone to production and may or may not end up making it that far. I like the Arista management model much better; the management port is disabled by default, so you either have to use the console, and enable it with an ip or DHCP, or use zerotouch provisioning. And there is no users and no passwords, thus no default to change, you just connect to the console, create a user and that is what you can use remotely via SSH. No default passwords, no default users, no IP conflicts, and no random DHCP IPs, i wish more manufacturers would adopt this model, it is super nice to work with.

With the unifi leaf mia, this as well as the unifi aggregation pro are the two I'm looking at. FS sales rep quoted ... much higher idle power and noise, so I'm happy to hear they aren't quite so bad. It's tempting to replace those fans with something downrated, tbh. The front is a little odd. I need a few sfp28, I'd like qsfp28 for the future, not sure I care about qsfp though. The UI is a plus as a non-network engineer, but I'm going to need to bring up a few access points anyway, so the unifi environment is a draw, even given recent history. The nice thing is that we're starting to get some reasonable-ish choices in this price point. And that's no fib :)

Patrict, it's great you've gotten around to showing off the FS Pro Managed Switch Line. You pointed out all the cool little tricks hidden in their switch chassis. Our data center has two of the FS S5860-24XB-U switches. One is located in the Server Room Storage Rack connected to the iSCSI SAN's and the other switch is uplinked through 40G to the primary workroom area where all the various PC workstations and editing stations are located. Also have the Netgear M4300-96X this sucker is the coolest modular switch by far. Try configurating this switch yourself here: www.netgear.com/business/wired/switches/fully-managed/m4300-configure/ We have a mix of 1GbE PoE++, 10GBase-T, 10G SFP+ and 2x40G QSFP+ cards. We can hook most everything together. Wish they have a 100G uplink though, I hear it's coming soon. Also can distribute PoE++ over 10GBase-T switch like the D-Link DGS-1520-28MP which lets us uplink PoE++ at 10GbE for both 1GbE PoE++ devices and 2.5GbE PoE++ devices, Very handy. However the Netgear is the coolest looking by far! You know how important that is (or not) :-)

Would be nice to have a 12/12 split between PoE and SFP/+, with a couple 40g QSFP+ ports. Only thing I could do is run 2 switches to get what I want, and then I'd have 2 switches with a ton of wasted ports. Netgear has some modular thing, but then I'd have a ton of empty slots with no modules. Aruba's modular ones would also be left very empty, but they're too expensive for home use.

It's a 1.72''x17.32''x12.99'' (43.6x440x330mm). :D You have a "Ressources" section on the product page, where is all doc about it. There is the Datasheet and the size information was on page 7. img-en.fs.com/file/datasheet/s5860-series-switches-datasheet.pdf

Am I just too naive or would it be sensible that on a probably dedicated network without internet access, the switch uses DHCP? there shouldn't be any malicious actors on a management network right?

Common, to Display\test YES... IN a real deployment, it is a bad idea, as NO Air can flow from bottom 2 top. OR Vice, depending on a datacenter cooling setup. Typically, it is 1u space in between, ESPECIALLY in a open server rack. Versus a APC or Custom Rack, taht are sealed, with chanelled air.

On the question about the shelves…those are probably fake reviews shot from the same rack…many Chinese companies don’t have a problem with posting fake reviews or hiring reviewers to say good things.

I suspect the shelves are for testing. Quick swapping without needing to screw into the rack over and over again. Especially with rack ears it can be annoying holding the switch in 1 hand while screwing it in with the other. And then it sags

That's my guess, too. And leaving a 2U hole allows slapping in bigger boxes without having to reconfigure the shelves.

To me even this video was weak. Basically, no useful information has been shared. I do not understand if you cannot do a proper review why bother. Is it not the idea of reviews to check if the manufacturer shares honest information? Is it not the idea of reviews to state the strong and weak points of a product? Otherwise it is just unboxing or demonstrating, not reviewing.

The fake reviews are really disappointing - surely the hardware stands up by itself without trying to bias things.

While switch fabric is very capable the software is poor and buggy. SPT does not work correctly and creates bridge loops. Web interface creates config options not allowed in the cli and cli creates config options that the web interface removes. Lacks RPVST and handles VLANS differently in the web interface than the cli. Does not support transceivers from different vendors that will work in a Aruba or Cisco. All of these issue are software related and could be fixed IF tech support actually wanted to. Like all of the FS products it is a a buyer-beware, know what you are getting before paying for the product. If it does not work as advertised the day you get it .... it will most likely not get an update to fix it. Be prepared to deal with the communications gap where it will take 5x the replies to cover basic conversations.

haha Fiberstore, the company who got banned and censored on Reddit for spamming their products both directly and in 3rd person posts, the company who setup countless blogs and websites to self-review their own products, the company who will randomly discontinue a product with no warning or planned lifecycle, the company who will change the design of a product but not the model number so ordering the same thing 3 months apart will get you a very different item, the company who's employees leave with customer data and start emailing you from other Chinese companies a month later, the company who suckered ServeTheHome into getting them another review....oh you get the idea. FS was once a cheep source for optics and cables but kept raising their prices, and now they are producing network devices that have typos in obvious places. These are nothing more than slightly obtainable network devices that home lab nerds drool over. No one in their right ind with any knowledge of Fiberstore's history and way of doing things would dare run this equipment in a real network.

Their SFPs still have been doing a good job and they are still cheap! Didn't notice that reddid thing, but I'd definately dislike that kind of marketing.
