I'm 20 years old and I just got this car with 150.000km, the car is in great condition, had to fix the head lights, blinkers, stop lights, all the door handles, inner and outer ones, and that's it, I didn't have to touch the engine, the car is very spacious inside which is perfect for me at 6'3 (I used to drive a Fiat Panda which was horrific, no leg room and room for my shoulders in the car), the trunk is huge, and I mean, enormous, especially for a 4 door hatch-back, bigger than 90% of modern cars and jeeps and SUVs that are twice the size of this car, it has a hydraulic servo which is a huge plus in my book, bought it for 700 euros, spent another 800 euros to fix it up and register it so that I can drive it on the road, so for 1500 euros total I have in my opinion a great car, and most important of all, I'm not sure how to say this in English, but it has a very long suspension travel, basically the total length from where the shock absorbers are completely compressed to the point where they're completely depressed (which makes the car really soft over shitty roads with tons of bumps and potholes) which is perfect for the road conditions in my country (Serbia), shit roads with a ton of potholes.

I remember this car as being sold as FSO Caro as the name polonez was dropped in England, you could buy the car as a 1.5 petrol or 1.9 diesel which was a engine of Peugeot origin. It was priced cheaply but the build quality wasn’t the best, in my opinion it was better than a lada riva of the same era, made a good value purchase as a pickup truck.

I can still recall the day my mom picked one of these from the local FSO dealership back in 1995. It was a giant leap forward compared to Fiat 126. Lots of memories came up after watching this video. Cheers mate!

I had a facelifted version of this, from 1997 with factory fitted shorter main gear and Rover K16 DOHC 16v engine, it was great fun to drive. They started fitting 1.4 103HP Rover engines in 1993 into these as an option, together with short main gear. 103HP doesn't sound like much today, but in 1993 it was one of the top fastest cars you could realistically meet anywhere in the post-communist countries, and even for standards of the West, the performance was very respectable, as VW Golf III 1.4 had only around 60HP.

@@TheJetJONES Yup. When they introduced widened suspension and some cool options such as very quick ZF power steering, Raid rally style steering wheels and bucket seats, they also gave it K16 engines. Tens of thousands Polonezes left the factory with factory fitted Rover engines, the weakest of which was 103 BHP. Most of the production volume was 1.4 liters, but a couple hundreds were made with 1.6 and 1.8 liter K16s. Because 1.4 Polonez is almost perfectly compatible with bigger K series engines, in recent years many spaws were made, including swaps into VVC which requires some more electrical and coolant pipes modification, and ignition modification in MG ZR/TF versions of the engine, and a modified flywheel as there is some crankshaft position sensor issue. Actually if you visit my channel and click 'Videos' the first two will be with the very car I used to own, and the second features mainly factory Rovers and Rover swaps.

They could have done it on purpose. Many Polonezes were factory fitted with Rover engines, and many get such swaps. Polonez Tuning Klub members in Poland like parking next to relatively rare Rover cars, and take photos of Polonez-Rovers with their 'cousins'.

The Lada Riva & latter day FSO Polenez / Caro models were unsung heroes in the 80s & 90s, and I owned a few. Good solid, if basic, motoring on a budget. "The Big H" pays tribute to the Polenez, a Polish classic now, but back in the day a good comfy workhorse. As always "H" makes a no nonsense video, reflecting his passion for all things automotive and unusual. I love this bloke, and if I ever meet him, I'll buy him a pint! Cheers "H"; Skelly.

Had a "G" reg Polonez Prima as a stop gap back in the 90's. I ended up keeping it for 5yrs. It drove like a brick, sounded like a sewing machine, and the drivers door sometimes flew open going round a left hand bend, but it always started first time, every time, and kept going. Solid as anything too, and it had variable speed intermittent wipers. Your Fords and Vauxhalls never had that!

I owned one from new in 1978, wonderfully comfortable car which took us to such diverse places as Jersey and the Western Isles. Only let me down once when 1 week old, we were on holiday in North Devon when it developed charging problems. Took it to a local dealer who diagnosed a faulty voltage regulator and since he didn't have one in sock he pinched one from a car in the showroom and I was back on the road half an hour later. Finally PXed it in 1985 with over 120,000 on the clock.

It's absolutely beautiful. I bet there are barely any left of these in the UK and it doesn't suprise me at all. Such an old and cheap car from some post-communist country had no chance to survive for a long period of time, and I can't really blame anyone, why would someone even care about such a... thing. Even Poles have a tendency to completely shit over it, except either people that are insanely nostalgic towards it or are total fanatics. I also noticed that this one has the older dash and it has power windows on the front. That's a really suprising combo for the 91 model I gotta say, here in Poland it's rare to see even the later models with these equipped. Really good looking example.

just a small nitpick, this specific model which is caro wasn't actually from the communist times, it started production in basically the first year of capitalism in Poland. it was produced from 1991 to 1997 (2002 if we count the daweoo buyout as the same model, which it kinda sorta wasn't) the polonez model which was produced in communist times is the one with 4 circular headlights.

You can use a Wabasto heat hose for this application, you just need to match up the thickness. It looks like they had some exhaust heat going in to the intake.

It's not a narrow Caro. It's a wide Caro, only with old steel panel under the windshield and air scoop on the bonnet, a hybrid model from 93 just before the full modernization. The bonnet itself is even rarer, it's the Caro RHD bonnet- it has scoop but also this rifled pannel from bonnets that didn't have the scoop.
